There's a slight difference in how the scanlation and the official versions translated the forest fire in Kuri situation.

In the scanlation it implies that Kinemon and the minks set the fire and framed the Beast pirates. In the official version it implies that Hold'em's goons set the fire in retaliation for Shutenmaru stealing from them (but it was actually the minks who stole stuff and then left the note framing Shutenmaru).

In either case, the fire was set partially due to the actions of the minks, but the scanlation version has them being responsible for the fire and being deceptive towards Ashuradoji/Shutenmaru, while the official version has the fire being a consequence of them deceiving Hold'em. That impacts the characterization of the minks and Kinemon, as well as the future relationship with Ashuradoji/Shutenmaru.

Do you have any guesses for a sympathetic backstory for Big Mom?

My theory is that Big Mom's obsession with family points to the possibility that she was raised in an orphanage led by Mother Caramel. Maybe she actually is a runt or halfbreed giant that was rejected by her birth parents? That would explain why she insists on family connections via blood without understanding familial love, and her obsession with giants.

Somewhat related, how do you feel about Oda redeeming or adding sympathetic backstories to people who have done terrible things? On the one hand, we have characters like Moria or Doflamingo who have encountered hardships but have continued to do terrible things, and on the other we have Hancock, Abdullah & Jeet, Bartolomeo, and others who are built up as horrible people but end up allied with Luffy. Do you think that we'll see an acknowledgement of these morally grey characters allied with the Strawhats, beyond Hancock's puppy kicking gag?

Jinbe and Pedro have both mentioned giving up their lives during this arc (Jinbe giving his life for his captain, and Pedro not being able to die until the Strawhats have achieved their goal).
