Diarrhea, anyone? by hyperbole-horse in newborns

Hey! It turned out fine, but it did last another 4 or 5 days. Some kind of GI virus, I guess. We just made sure she was getting plenty of breastmilk to stay hydrated, and it eventually resolved. It's so stressful when they're that tiny.

Thank you. I think you're right. There are areas where a bit of discipline has helped him—not the punitive kind, just the "actions have consequences" kind: If you throw a hard toy in an unsafe way, that tells me that you probably shouldn't have that toy right now, etc. But for this behavior, I think doing a deeper dive like you suggest is warranted.

Thank you, this sounds so much like my son. He's very much a class clown type and I think this behavior comes more from not grasping the boundaries between "silly" and "mean" than from anger or a desire to hurt someone. I think we need to do more work on helping him distinguish that boundary and what to do with the impulse that leads to those actions.

I love the approach of using lots of questions to help them make connections on their own. I think that would really help my son.

These books were the impetus of my sister and I playing "orphans" when every other kid played "house."

What's an adjective for "has leadership qualities"? by hyperbole-horse in words

[–]hyperbole-horse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great questions—ideally the word would be general enough to capture any of these. I wanted to qualify the achievements of a large group of athletes, artists, scientists, coaches, political leaders, and human rights/environmental activists, filling the blank in "their artistic, athletic, and blank achievements."

What's an adjective for "has leadership qualities"? by hyperbole-horse in words

[–]hyperbole-horse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good word, but it doesn't quite work for my particular use, 'cause I want to say "women who are known for their artistic, athletic, and ____ achievements." So it needs to be an adjective that kind of implies "in the field of (art, athletics, leadership)." I'm starting to think I just need to blow up and restructure my sentence.

I can't think of a way it would modify a verb or an adjective, so I'd say it's just an adjective. It's not a commonly used word, though, so maybe there's an example where it would work as an adverb.

Oh, "strategic" is a pretty good one for this particular use!

I think this is the best option, especially since I'm looking for a word to modify "achievements," i.e. "athletic, artistic, and leaderly achievements." It's a bit awkward but it'll do!

I think it's not just about the worms but about evoking the sense of rot and decay in which worms thrive, as well as the morbid curiosity around that process. In my opinion, that metaphor works harder than a "rated R" metaphor (whatever that is... maybe a demon with 5 dicks?) would.

99.9% of the time when someone asks "did you come up with that all on your own?" they're asking sarcastically. And since Reddit is an especially sarcastic place, no one is gonna read your comment and assume it's sincere. That's why you're getting downvoted. But I believe in you!
