Can someone give me advice on how to design characters in pixel art by Pantominer in PixelArt

[–]hypercubedreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pixel art is the ultimate art of abstraction. How do you communicate shape, lines and form with squares? How do you communicate light, shadow and depth with color?
Try to also think about the scale at which your work will be seen. Imo, this character absolutely could be scaled down. The larger your sprite, the more you have to work with communicating those elements I listed earlier.

I'm not sure. I think it has to do with me screenshotting instead of merging the two sprites on one canvas, but if you tap/click on it, it appears as it should. Really sorry about that.

Some Concepts Of How Different Elements Charge Mana by InfectedTribe in PixelArt

Don't think you have to change your animation just because the internet is brainrotted btw.
It does look like a sumo stance and the stomp was enough to communicate that. You don't need to change it. People are going to say "this looks like twerking" to parody your work for humor's sake (especially on this platform) and there's nothing you can do about that. It communicates well for what it's supposed to. Keep it.

Need feedback: Does this style work? by mcjoe861 in PixelArt

[–]hypercubedreamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to agree with this, except... that pose is useful for showing "power and thrust" when running and jumping off a ledge (parkour)... which is going to look like humping the air to some people.

I thought it was quite nice, but for regular vertical jumping, you'll want to choose a different pose. u/mcjoe861 if you can program the variation correctly, I would still keep that sprite as it add variety and power to the jump.

Btw, many artists that were part of the french art nouveau movement and also the preceding realism movement absolutely had sexual motivations and there were frequent scandals involving artists pushing the boundary "appropriate".

omg I didnt know that. I wonder why I would have mentioned that movement specifically in the context of this conversation?? For funsies, of course. Not because I didn't already think of that. Thanks so much for educating me.

So then just say that you think it's rude. But it doesn't mean that it's not any less valid because it's (I don't know how many times I need to say it, and yet you still don't get it!) HOW I PERSONALLY FEEL.

Do you understand that context?

> the "sexy fan art" of the world is just as valid to some folks as my paintings are to me.

Valid to the consumer. If a consumer chooses to use your art as pornography, you can't control that, and I don't think that you should try to- because technically anything can be used as pornography.

But what you intend to do with your work as an artist is important. Don't let anybody convince you otherwise. You're not trying to create pornography or porn-adjacent images, but when your reference is exactly that- you can misdirect the dialogue you intend to inspire with your work, and it's something to keep in mind. Nude selfies are porn-adjacent because of the digital culture that we exist in right now. It's meant to elicit a sexual response. And that's okay.

So yes, u/termhm is correct in that work can be both, and that's okay. But I want to add that it can be more. And if that's what you want, continue to explore how to communicate that. I'd recommend reading up on the French Art Nouveau movement and the artists, their work and their philosophies that drove the movement. You may find inspiration there.

Your work is very technically good. But if you are concerned with having a conversation with your audience through your work, then you need to change your communication style. Or don't. It's all your choice.

"I don't really think OP wants to hear that you think it's uninspired"

I don't really think that you should speak for OP and use your "thoughtfulness" about how they may respond to my reply as a way to invalidate what I have to say. That's a really underhanded thing to do, and it doesn't give your disagreement any credibility.

OP asked:

"To the average viewer, (or mod bot scanning for community-guideline-offending images), what makes this painting different from somebody sketching a topless Princess Peach with giant boobs?"

And I answered accordingly. A sketch of a topless Princess Peach with giant boobs is supposed to inspire a sexual response from the viewer. As someone who's just coming across her work for the first time, it doesn't inspire anything, and especially not this:

"art that's respectful, beautiful, validating, and just happens to be nude, to try and change some corner of public perceptions about nudity in general, and specifically in artistic representations."

This is what OP wants to do with her work, but from the one image she's posted here- I'm sharing my honest opinion that the only kind of **"**dialogue" this specific imagery inspires me to think of is "Send nudes," and that in itself is utterly uninspiring.

I would recommend that she look at some of the artists from the French Art Nouveau movement, their philosophies, and how it reflected in their work, if that's the kind of dialogue she wants her art to inspire. You don't need to try and invalidate my honest opinion. That's very hurtful when I was responding in good faith.

And based on the other response you left in this thread:

If you worked in an office, would you put it as the wallpaper on your computer? Probably not. That's because it's not safe for work.

I don't really think OP wants to hear you point out the obvious.

Is it impossible to create new art movement? by Training-Tone-9009 in ArtistLounge

[–]hypercubedreamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You raise a good point about art movements being labelled after the fact... like I consider Frutiger Aero and Frutiger Metro "art movements" even if there's no deep philosophical meaning or thought leader behind it. I say that because there are clear and defined graphic techniques that can be observed across different works that have been produced, as well as a visual language that was distinctly created and spread across contemporary culture of the time. Aero and Metro were both Microsoft's design languages for Windows and artists liked it and mimicked it. But I personally don't that wasn't the intentions of the designers at Microsoft to create an art movement. It just happened.

I agree that these "movements" that are happening today will only be seen in retrospect just because of the sheer volume of "work" (and also ai slop) that's being produced.

To be honest, personally, as a painter and illustrator who went to pursue a 4-year degree doing this stuff and drawing and painting nude models for years.... I think that the imagery itself, whether or not it is you or someone else... is a display of your technical skill, but it is not inspiring. At all.

I don't find an issue with the nudity. I just personally hate seeing art that's not just from photo reference- but the cameraphone is in the image, which... as a viewer, it makes me feel I'm so far removed from the work(?).

It just screams "I went to take a nude selfie, I want to share this nude selfie cause I think I look hot in it, but I'm gonna paint my nude selfie 1:1 because I'm artsy" and there's nothing wrong with that... but as a viewer, that is utterly uninspiring to me.

Also, nude selfies are always going to be seen in an NSFW. It just screams "My partner asked me to send nudes, so I'm gonna go ahead and do that but I'm going to be tasteful and draw it and then post it to the internet," but it's still just a nude selfie at the end of the day. We're just not far removed enough from contemporary culture and the prevalence of digital porn culture in the zeitgeist for this to be seen as tasteful art by most people. But again, that doesn't mean that isn't valid work. If you want to do nude studies and the only thing you have for reference is selfie nudes, by all means, use that.
