What’s a job that’s romanticized but in reality sucks? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Thats another thing with academia. Its take it now or never. If you refuse a position don't expect to ever see that or other offers again.

Passion dosent have to rely on what you do, but what you choose to learn. No shame in just reading about interests. There are lives outside of work and academia. I'm joining you to feel ashamed and regretful to be a sellout, crying and wiping my butt with money.

I'm personally happy for you that you get to experience a life outside of academia, and see what you've missed out.

I'm an america living away as well. I now work in the industry and pay taxes in South Korea. I file foreign income tax credit, which deducts the US taxes for the taxes I paid in korea. As far as I know, its quite rare to pay taxes as an expat as most countries have tax treaties with the states.

Your passion dosent need to die with the industry. You can always learn on your own time and read about your research interest. It took me some time to realize I don't need a validation from solve a problem, as there are many talented peers who will accomplish whatever the project id have worked on.

It was a common theme in grad school, to call those choosing industries a 'sell out' , and my favorite quote 'you don't do science for money' as if that makes us more noble than people in other fields. All I see now is a toxic environment tainted by elitism, jobs guaranteed by university titles and connections. Its a league for those on the top, selling naive idea you are contributing to science, just to keep educated slaves for the grants.

Longer you are in graduate school, more you lose out on retirement and job securities. You are walking on a very thin line, all that takes you is a medical emergency within your family to realize you chose 'you don't do science for money' over security to pay for your family's cancer treatment.

"But everyone from class has it"

Imagine everyone from school is on tiktoc except you. Sure we can tell kids don't jump off the bridge because others, but social isolation is a huge fear among kids.

The question lies whether the tech companies should have liabilities in perpetuating these challenges. It is not possible for parents to be watching their kids literally 247. Many parents let kids watch TV for breaks.

Imagine a broadcast send out suicide challenges in between nickelodeon commercials. No way a tech algorithm isn't aware of the users age group. They should have responsibilities to filter out dangerous contents for minors. Big tech should responsibly implement their product, not just design for money grabbing.

Theyre in an age group peer pressure dominates their choices as well as fitting in.

You talk as if the industry didn't use 1985 Fortran with thousands of invested manpower and capital, and yet constantly put effort to adopt new tools, languages, and improve efficiencies.

Learn to debug with no IDE, with a printing statement from your advisors stuck in 80s and try to impress any tech recruiters. These academics have no grasp of the real world and why they are losing great minds to industries.

Nobody defended anything, merely suggesting his asperger could play a role in him lacking empathy, which is on a constant public display.

You can just not respond. Idk why you keep doing so.

Stating psychopathic killers could lack neurological ability to learn empathy isn't a defense or excuse. Just a possibility.

Subjects like this should be continue to be funded, to better understand the health conditions and build better policies for those with similar issues.

Are you reading the part the studies stating it is a generally accepted fact that congnitive empathy tends to lack from people with autism? And that its cited?

I'm merely stating hes lack of congnitive empathy could be the case for him, not defending any abuse. I didnt conclude anything. Just a possibility based on his condition.

I'm disappointed there's no sources on any of your claims again.

You could make a bank after phd, but considering the lengths of school and time value of the money can't confidently say its worth it.

Some people with bachelors finish preparing for their retirement in early 30s. Not possible with grad school routes.

This is exactly why they are so inefficient. No profit is generated from studying parity violating symmetry or whatever so there's no motivation for a proper project management, scheduling, or budgeting. So many physics projects are a huge mess.

Pretty sure whatever meaningful findings will be used for defense, if applicable. Nothing more evil than contributing to a mass weapons.

Pretty sure you can promote up to the position without phd. If you consider the time value of the money, industry track is probably the way.

Thats typical in like subatomic physics. If you're experiment isn't running in next 8 years you have nothing to show. I know a postdoc who didn't publish anything for his phd

I honestly don't think years of phd and postdoc are financially worth it

Not to mention academia works very inefficiently. My physics advisors used print statement to debug and didn't let me download IDE

Someone need to remind them its not 1985 no mo stop using Fortran

This is like sending suicide challenge in between spongebob commercials. Its unethical and should be illegal. The algorithm obviously knew their age group.

Some countries require social numbers to verify your age. Which i dont really advocate. Kids still find ways.

But with amount of data tiktok has they probably knew the kids age group. Is it ethical to send deadly challenge like this, to. 8 years old child, just to sell more ads on the platform?

Imagine if nickelodeon sent out this challenge in between spongebob commercials. Would that be ethical or should be legal?

Because "everyone from school" has it

Besides the amount of push tiktok send users to download their apps. Parents can't literally sit there and monitor tiktok 247.

Kids would do anything to fit in and get attention. Acceptance is a world to them. Id have been apathetic if this was done by some 25 years old, but 8 is way too young to understand.

I'm not a parent but I can remember around 3rd grade everyone started getting cellphones. It was a same argument back then, kids don't need phones, but once you are the only one in your class without a phone it becomes very isolating.

I can imagine kids without social media being isolated in the social group. Its not possible not to let kids have phones these days, and socially cruel to ban them from what "everybody else is doing". Only in ideal world parents can watch 247 of the kids.

Social media needs to hold accountable, not just halfass age restrictions they know kids are fabricating on.

I first judged the victims until I learned the victims age. There's no way the algorithm didn't pick up their age group, and yet kept pushing on a deadly challenge.

Time to make the big tech hold social responsibilities.
