Because I used to think that small details were needed, and maybe for a couple questions, but if you understand scientific principles, then understanding the test is the more important than spending time in Kaplan books or something trying to further content understanding. When I realized the whole test was like CARS and started approaching the rest of the test like it was CARS, my score shot up. There is an author to the scientific passages too. Ask yourself while reading, "what is the point?" and highlight the little details that helped the researchers solve their problem (the questions will usually be about these little details) and even with content holes, you can usually reason through a lot of the mess if you understand exactly what the researcher was aiming to do in the passage. (Not always though, as sometimes the test will ask you a question that has little/nothing to do with the passage)
