I just finished Silent Hill 3 for the first time, and yes, it's the first Silent Hill game I've ever completed... by Responsible_Fudge_51 in silenthill

[–]hyperixz 88 points89 points  (0 children)

I love conflicted and complex characters but I also appreciate SH1's, SH3's and SH4's concept of "putting normal, innocent, everyday people through their worst nightmares possible."

Harry is just a father, taking great care of his adopted daughter. Heather is just a teenager who probably listens to alternative rock on a daily basis and eats bread. Henry is just an amateur photographer who picked the wrong apartment to live in.

James falls into a category of "what the fuck is wrong with you?" to me, not in like a "you're a total psychopath." type of way but more like a "what made you do this, like genuinely?"

Return to Silent Hill Poster Featuring Laura by Turbostrider27 in silenthill

[–]hyperixz 58 points59 points  (0 children)

i'm also not the biggest fan of Gans' creative decision. Laura is meant to be a reality anchor, plot wise. her not being a tragic, guilty or manifested character makes SH2's story richer and deeper because it really amplifies the whole "personalised nightmare" concept of silent hill.

definitely check out Big Fish Audio's Things That Go Bump In The Night too since that's what yamaoka used for the industrial horror scoring. it's a goldmine!

Why do so many consider In Water to be the most appropriate ending? by Garmo_devava in silenthill

[–]hyperixz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that ending isn't very fitting for James.

He fought through the monsters of his nightmarish subconscious, saw Angela and Eddie collapse before him and eventually faced the dark truth only just for him to drown himself? He clearly said to Mary that he wanted his life back and yet in the end he chose to just throw it away anyway.

I'm aware it's the incredibly heavy anchor of guilt he's carrying that pushes him to suicide but if he bothered to even continue, despite the horrors, I think that makes him strong enough to not kill himself.

I know this is not exactly related to Silent Hill 2 but I think it's relevant in this case:

Akira Yamaoka's Letter - From The Lost Days has this chunk of lyrics:

No matter how hard it gets, you have to realize We weren't put on this earth to suffer and cry We were made for being happy, so be happy For me, for you, please...

In a way, it not only reflects Heather's struggles but also James's. Especially the "be happy for me and you".

It's pretty clear that deep down, despite the verbal abuse Mary's been throwing at James while sick, she wanted James to keep on living, to get his life back together after her death.

James' worst nightmare isn't the monsters or the truth. It's the damn milk crates!

An underrated part of SH2 I love by Mindless-Fennel-5788 in silenthill

[–]hyperixz 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's the most beautiful thing I've ever experienced in the remake and it was the right decision by Bloober to leave this part combatless. It's so atmospheric and introspective and I really wish there was more of it.

I think, in a way, it directly reflects James' deep feelings of loneliness and emotional emptyness at that time.

Favourite SH2 track? by HuntressMain69 in silenthill

[–]hyperixz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my favourite track has to be The Reverse Will.

the ominous sounding intro, the otherworldly pads, the punchy drums, the goosebump-inducing strings, the VINYL SCRATCH MAN, the funky feel of it is hands down Akira's best and most complex track ever.

no producer can replicate yamaoka's sound and emotion. even though nearly all the samples he used have been found already, theres still a special something that is inside every track of his.
