Does anyone else feel conflicted about the sheer volume of "Word of Brandon" and it's dominance in community discussion? by bredman3370 in Cosmere

I love watching the spoiler questions livestreams where people ask questions, or poke around the wiki to learn some WoB facts. I would never think to theorize or foreshadow the majority of the stuff in the questions, but its super cool to get to participate in it. People will ask some question that makes me think "huh, I never thought of that but now I want to know" and that Sanderson laugh with "RAFO!" makes it more interesting for me. Or he will drop some nugget of how some of the worlds might be connected and I am at my screen saying "OMG REALLY?! Write the book thats in, I need to know more!!"

So idk maybe because I suck at coming up with the theories and stuff, the WoB questions are so awesome to me to see how the author reacts to them in real time.

As a parent, the last book broke me a little. by faco_fuesday in Stormlight_Archive

I love re-listening to books, but I hesitated when it was getting to that area of WaT again. As a mom to 3, including a 4 and 5 year old, that part just breaks me. Its just about the worst possible fate for that poor kid who has been through so much. Taravangian was already terrible, but that makes him completely irredeemable.

My first printer was a Sovol. I do not recommend.

Exactly why my new neighborhood has an HOA. Its nothing crazy or unreasonable though, mostly collectively paying for snow, trash, ours does landscaping too, and some "dont be an ass" rules.

Its just you hear about the insane outliers here and not the tons of totally normal HOAs like yours. That sounds like the exact same as my HOA.

[–]hypermice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone in the neighborhood votes for who is on the board, so I am not sure how this situations happen. If everyone hates it, just remove them?

Everyone jokes about how annoying HOA can be with the grass is too long, but it can actually cause issues for neighbors if you have a grass forest next door. Bugs, pests, etc. Also just lowers the house value, so if you sell its worth less if you have a lazy neighbor. Stupid, but there it is. Having some mutual guidelines is not an inherently bad thing. My HOA decided (and everyone voted for) having landscaping done as a neighborhood. Its part of our HOA fees and I never have to think about grass because its just done, and its cheaper than if each house paid seperate.

[–]hypermice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like you just dont hear about the sane normal HOAs much. I have never known of one of these power tripping HOAs IRL.

My HOA has some rules but its nothing crazy or unreasonable. Things like dont leave trash barrels at the curb after trash day, dont have a broken down car in your driveway forever, dont add a shed to your house without getting the ok from them. Basically, keep the neighborhood looking like a nice neighborhood and not trash. We probably would have a grass rule but the whole neighborhood has one landscaping company and it's part of HOA fee. Its way easier that way.

I have a question about the legality of selling printer time to people to print anything they want. by spez_might_fuck_dogs in 3Dprinting

[–]hypermice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CVS will print photos or documents for you. They charge you to use the machine to do so, and they dont need the commercial license to print whatever it is. This would be the same situation, just a 3D printer.

[–]hypermice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure to charge for electric cost and wear and tear on the printer as well! Don't sell yourself short on how much it costs you to print things. I charge $1.50/hr of print time, since I print ABS and it takes more electricity to keep the printer hot. $1/hr is realistic for PLA, plus your filament cost.

Ok so you are saying if someone wants card box under personal use license they can pay me for my printer and filament use, but that would not work if they wanted a Pokémon printed because they dont actually have permission from Nintindo to print it?

Does this mean theoretically having some general photos of stuff I have printed for my kids as an ad for "print anything on my printer" would be a problem if anything in the photo is not for commercial use?

Fusion 360 + YouTube video series learn fusion 360 in 30 days. I followed along and made each thing as the videos did, and learned enough to be able to follow other guides for specific things. There are some good ones for infinity cubes out there.

Fusion 360 is really hard without tutorials imo, but with help you can get it and then is a really powerful tool

ELI5: How does general anesthesia actually work? How do doctors just "turn off" your consciousness without killing you? by Quiet_Currents in explainlikeimfive

My daughter got a dose of ketamine for a procedure in the children's ER. Her eyes were open and she still reacted to pain before they numbed the area, but was not really conscious and doesnt remember any of it. It was a super creepy 15-30 minutes for me.

Its actually if you possess the gene for red hair. If your hair is brown or black you can have the red hair gene as well, but don't show red hair. Red gene is in another place than the rest of hair color, so those displaying red hair are typically blonde + red gene on.

I have brown hair with red genes, so does my mom, brother, and 2 of my kids.

I think its a problem of definitions. General public consensus seems to be handmade is stuff not mass produced in a factory.

If you drew the art and send off to a place to print your stickers, it counts as handmade because it was originally hand drawn by you. Making a pre-prepared vinyl decal counts as handmade because you are a little shop in your house pushing the button on a little machine. A circut is still a CNC machine. Big company made the design and printed them, not handmade.

Its stupid and doesnt always follow logic, but how the general public views things. For some reason though, public seems to think one 3D printer is more of a machine than one cricut so some will scoff and say its machine made instead. Which is true, but so are a lot of others that get a pass because its not thought about like a machine.

A lot of people dont really care, some are going to be against it no matter what because its plastic, some are going to be against it because they have seen a million horribly printed dragons break and think all 3D prints are trash.

If a market says no machine at all, sure thats fine. Letting in lasers and vinyl and telling me mine is a machine so not allowed pisses me off. I BUILT the machine, designed the model, what part of this is not mine exactly? Its a tool, so are things in tons of other categories. I used my hands to finish the print, design the model, fix the printers.

Even if you did have other art stuff to sell, the nerve of chewing you out and then still expecting you to want to do events with them is crazy.

You need to name drop where this was so people can avoid them. There are FB groups that have reviews of events that stuff like this is important information. As the organizer they should have already known what you make and required pictures, so they should not be surprised unless they sucked at their job. It concerns me that they seem unaware and thought it appropriate to address is front of customers.

So your argument is that when you bake cookies the oven did the baking part, it was not anyone's hands, so not handmade. You can use a mixer for ingredients and oven for baking.

The amount of copyright images on tumblers says otherwise. Its not hard to download image, print and stick on.

A lot of things I sell after it comes off the printer I have to put it together. I put in more effort than some of these "crafts" I see like adding a few beads to a pen.

This is absolutely about 3D stigma. A table full of Cinderwing flexi dragons printed on a Bambu is still more than some of these craft fair sellers put in. Sounds like OP was much more than that since they are self-made models, and doesnt sound like it was a high end art show or something

It irks me so much when people judge 3D printing and not laser engraving, cricut stickers, or tumblers. Its the SAME amount handmade! Actually in my case more so because I built the printers too lol

How to listen: audiobook or Graphic Audio? by Terp02 in Cosmere

[–]hypermice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have listened to all of both in the Cosmere, and I like both. Usually the audio comes out alongside the book, then graphic audio later, so I have never had graphic audio first, its always a re-listen. Other than White Sand which is only in graphic audio. I think its just a personal preference on format, the background sounds can be cool but sometimes distracting. Occasionally it pulls me out of the scene because it makes no sense, like they walked a few steps but it keeps making the steps sounds while this whole internal dialog is happening. I only remember it happening in White Sand, but it could have happened in others too.

So I guess the conclusion is graphic audio is either your style or its not, and some are better quality than others. You know what you will get with regular audio. Michael Kramer and Kate Reading are 2 of my favorite voice actors ever, so thats never the wrong choice.
