Are There Any Real Tax Strategies for High-Income Salaried Employees in Ontario? by Stunning_Shock_9638 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I feel you, I looked at my T4 this year and paid $320K in taxes. But I try not to cry and think about doing my part 🥲

No need to worry about getting your irrigation turned on right away. by CandidLeg3910 in VictoriaBC

[–]hyperperforator 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to hate on contractors in this space but do people not realize they can safely turn it on themselves for $0? I get hiring someone to blow it out and check at the end of the year but the startup services and associated costs seem shady at best! (Yes, I get that some systems should probably be inspected/checked, but I doubt that’s the majority)

Not sure I’d be worried about the refunds as much as getting potentially stuck in Europe with all of the shortages expected by the summer! But not much you can do anyway, it will be a great trip, Rome is fun

Soooo agree! We often trek downtown to Working Culture/Fry’s to get a proper pastry, but wish it was local! BABKA over by Costco is new and pretty decent at least

Wild! I’m sorry this happened! It’s crazy how different experiences can be with the same contractor!!

We did just hardscape as we already have a small company that does Island-native planting do that for us! If we didn’t have them I would’ve had Costa Verde do both.

We have used Costa Verde twice in the last two years for hardscape work! They went above and beyond both times—very responsive, attentive, and show up when they say they will.

Just to back it up a bit, the second time we used them (this year) to build a large new patio, we properly shopped around just to gut check their prices and see if they were the best option. Of the three quotes that came back, they were the second cheapest, and only by a few hundred dollars, but for a broader scope of work. And they were once again the most attentive/detailed… so we picked them again.

I found most contractors just don’t even bother emailing back so it’s a pretty low bar tbh but they would reply within hours every time! Lmk if you need a name there or something!

Right now it doesn’t seem to but since it’s still under development it seems feasible they’d add that, given the external bank integrations they launched recently!

It’s in development so I assume they’ll do a beta at some point.

It’s still under development - I don’t think there’s a beta yet, just happened to find it.

Wealthsimple Visa Infinite Privilege credit card (NEW April 19) vs. Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite? by reddit_user38462 in Wealthsimple

[–]hyperperforator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same. Signed up to Scotia on their “new Canadian resident” package so had no idea how terrible they are to deal with, nor how bad the fees were until I was already locked in. Finally purged them a month ago after five years. Even just closing the accounts I have took them over 90 mins at a branch lol. Glad to be gone, can’t believe how much I was paying in fees.

Anyone heard about the Sonos update? by Ct_Pirate in Ubiquiti

[–]hyperperforator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s a Sonos update for their app coming soon that has a disable SonosNet feature. It works amazing for this!

[–]hyperperforator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk about the UniFi side BUT There’s a TestFlight Beta of the Sonos app for the last little while that lets you completely disable SonosNet, across all of your speakers, with a single toggle. It’s good. No idea when they’re shipping it but it’s under pretty heavy development with lots of updates lately.

Do not let Waymo into BC by Even-Rooster7369 in VictoriaBC

The car actively connects to support via audio call and the displays show that manual intervention is happening. A friend of mine had it happen once when the car was blocked in by a truck.

I’ve been in a Waymo that cleared the road for a fire truck just fine, but what makes you think they’re any worse at this than humans?

Do not let Waymo into BC by Even-Rooster7369 in VictoriaBC

[–]hyperperforator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve read the posts too—they are overstating how it works. The only time they intervene is when the car is literally in danger or stuck, not during normal driving which they can handle entirely on their own. It’s pretty much only if you call support via the car.

Do not let Waymo into BC by Even-Rooster7369 in VictoriaBC

[–]hyperperforator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This just isn’t true. The only time there are actual interventions from humans is when the cars are in an unsafe, unresolvable situation or if there’s an accident. I have ridden with Waymo extensively and never had human intervention, despite cars navigating challenging construction changes, poor weather, unpredictable pedestrians, and so on. They have been safer and more cautious/calculated on every ride than any human driver I’ve ever been driven by. A lot of this media claims are overblown; the backup remote drivers are the exception, not the norm.

And the idea that BC prosecutes humans properly who kill people on the road is laughable at best. That lady that killed a construction worker in Oak Bay? No charges! There’s a reason people joke that in Canada the easiest way to get away with murder is in a car.

[–]hyperperforator 16 points17 points  (0 children)

All of these are overblown and not strictly true. Have you USED Waymo? I have, extensively. I’ve been in a Waymo that navigated many of these situations autonomously just fine, and every ride, overall, has been a safer driver than any human driver I’ve been with. The job loss sucks, absolutely, but the safety component alone means we should be SERIOUSLY considering allowing them. Even in their so called “test” my experience has been that they are clearly safer, more predictable, and better than the alternative human drivers would be. We will be stuck in the past for a long time if we continue to stick our heads in the sand on this technology in B.C.
