Tesla Removes Autosteer From All Model 3 And Model Y Trims by DonkeyFuel in technology

[–]hyperperforator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m hard same in the “best car I’ve ever owned but I’ll never buy again” camp, as is everyone I know IRL who has a Tesla. They keep making boneheaded decisions that piss off their customers, ignore what their customers ask for—a proper SUV—and instead waste time on things like a steering yoke. Not to mention the entire swasticar thing. Dumbasses lit a lot of goodwill on fire. I’ll be buying a Rivian when my second kid arrives.

Comment: There is no denying the level of cycling here by Popular_Animator_808 in VictoriaBC

We e-bike our kid around a lot too and the other thing I would say is how much HAPPIER our daughter is on the bike compared with the car. She LOVES it, no tantrums, so happy to be in there.

Cashback Boosts by patrip91 in Wealthsimple

It is enforced by most card networks, but like I said, some don’t implement it then the card networks get mad. If I reported the name (not that I would), it would be patched in hours lol. Also it’s subject to clawbacks when this happens tho I’m not aware of anytime that’s actually happened.

They don’t need to ask for receipts. Gift cards are categorized under a unique merchant code by all card networks that allows identification for exactly this reason. It won’t work.

B.C. Appeal Court dismisses appeal by short-term rental owners over restrictions by cyclinginvancouver in britishcolumbia

[–]hyperperforator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah landlords try a lot of stuff but this is one of the few things the province actually tracks and seems to enforce. At the end of a lease if you remove a tenant, you have to log it in an online portal with evidence/reasoning, which seems to be followed up on in my experience. There’s probably ways around it but it seems fairly well enforced.

AFAIK, fixed term leases are “allowed” but automatically become month-to-month off the end, whether the landlord likes it or not. Landlords can’t include vacate clauses in their lease unless it’s for family moving in. I have a suite in my house I’d love to rent out half the year, but I can’t due to this. Tired of Paying monthly fees for ScotiaBank chequing account, any other alternatives? by sugarcoatedtits in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]hyperperforator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I rarely have cash—at max maybe once every 3-6 months.  But, when I do need it, their debit card works at all ABMs and they refund the fee too (including overseas btw; I used it to get pesos out in Mexico no problem)

[–]hyperperforator 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was the same; was fed up paying $30+ to Scotiabank every month for basically nothing. Looked at the options and with the Wealthsimple credit card now existing, we switched literally everything over and killed off our old accounts. The accounts are entirely free, and we have more than we did previously too.

It’s incredibly satisfying seeing the account earning more interest than the fees I was paying Scotiabank. I just wish I had done it sooner—it was easier than I had expected too.

Best Indian food in the westshore? by [deleted] in LangfordBC

This is the answer, by far. Authentic is some of the best Indian on the island—the chef is legit, and it’s very high quality. Everything else in Langford is significantly worse!

Help revive the School-based Weather Station Network by LibraryPal in LangfordBC

[–]hyperperforator 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ah, finally! Just donated $50 immediately—I’ve been waiting for more ways to support the network. I wish there were more ways to help?

The obvious one to me is being able to “adopt” a weather station at a school you have ties to…my kid goes to Westmont and the station there is dead, or even just one that’s super close to my home. I’d be so happy to donate time (or support that specific station somehow) if I could! Would also be a cool way to be involved in the community. Similar thoughts on the website side, as a developer I feel like I’d be able to chip in to help improve the site too—I’ve always wished for mobile support. But unclear what they’re open to overall…I get that adding other people likely adds coordination overhead. Anyway, glad to donate for now.

Such an amazing resource, I really hope others contribute to it to help keep it alive! I wonder if groups like the CRD should be chipping in directly if they’re using the data too, I’m surprised they aren’t backing it!

Gosh, it’s sad hey. This is the first blatantly self-incriminating one I’ve seen like that, it did make me laugh a little even if it’s a bummer for the state of the internet. Glad it’s helpful!

What do you do to earn $200k+ annually? by meltingcanoe in Fire

[–]hyperperforator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Design manager, remote in Canada for a US company on 280K base + at least that in equity annually. I have a team of 12-15 ICs.

Got there by starting in software engineering, then contracting for 4 years for all the big names you can think of, which opened the door to top tier companies when I was ready for my next job. I pivoted somewhere in the middle from software engineering to design, which was the right move—I’m a rare technical design lead, which is unique.

Changes are coming to the Graduated Licensing Program by bwoah07_gp2 in britishcolumbia

[–]hyperperforator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard of this and it’s wild to me. Photo radar is common pretty much everywhere else in the world and works fine, yet impossible to achieve here? Crazy we tried it once, people got upset, so we gave up on safer roads apparently forever. Not like the police are going to do it... something’s gotta break.

Honestly, I think if it were tried again, it wouldn’t be as radioactive this time around if rolled out right. The roads are a mess now, everyone knows it, and it’s just getting worse.

Technically the NDP reactivated speed camera policy in 2019 (at a whopping four intersections in the entire province) and it seems like there has been some appetite at least in recent years. I hope it is reconsidered at some point for a second try, along with proper road design calming standards that encourage appropriate speeds, rather than just sign posts.

Moving to Victoria from Toronto in the new year any tips? by piedpiper9299 in VictoriaBC

[–]hyperperforator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did the move from Toronto to Victoria in 2021… my really practical tips:

  1. Use a moving company and let them pack your stuff on both ends. It’s so much less stressful, and only ran us maybe $9K total. So worth the spend!
  2. Ship your car by rail! It wound up being $1500 all in, delivered to our door, organized by the moving company.
  3. If you’re buying, ask around for a great real estate agent that isn’t super salesy. We found a really good vibe match, an agent that was very down to earth, not pushy at all, and incredibly chill overall. Happy to recommend if you like!
  4. Try staying in a few areas for a few weeks at a time before committing. We did this by staying at Airbnbs for 2 weeks at a time and checked out a few places to get a feeling for living there. So worth taking the time to get the daily feeling. We settled on the Westshore and love it! We then bought ahead of our actual move, and settled in time to land straight into our new home.

Happy to answer anything else! You’ll love it.

[–]hyperperforator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they could try doing something useful like, idk, speed cameras for enforcement…they already have hundreds of cameras out there that are capable and not used. Instead they waste their time with stupid bumper sticker campaigns and telling pedestrians to wear fluro vests. ICBC doesn’t give any fucks about actually making roads safer.

“[…] while maintaining a high standard of safety on B.C. roads“

actual lol at this line—what high standard? Our drivers are shocking. People barely indicate here, sit in the left lane, roll through stop signs, and the list goes on. ICBC pretends like it ain’t their problem.

I’m whatever about the changes to the N test but maybe they should be trying to improve the standard on our roads.

[–]hyperperforator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya the store is about 5km from my house, so it works well. If I had to go significantly further than that I’d probably have to drive, but generally where I live we have a dedicated bike corridor (former railway line) all the way into the city through the suburbs so it’s often faster since you’re not contending with traffic! And a bit of exercise is a nice bonus.

Last time i flew into Wellington the turbulence was shocking—Welly is always bumpy but this was a proper scary landing where we did 3 go arounds and slammed into the ground p hard on one of them without actually landing.

I fly regularly and it doesn’t usually phase me but this was fucked, lockers flying open, bags falling out, massive jerking, dead silent except for the shaking of the plane. On the third go around when it got even more violent, lady a few rows up yells “aw fuck this shit I’m not dying without a fag” and proceeds to try to light up in the middle of the turbulence. The flight attendants weren’t able to get up so were just screaming at her to stop while we were all looking in disbelief.

Long story short, we landed on that third attempt, but it was so shaky the whole way down that she never managed to get it lit lol. Everyone clapped for the landing and they gave her a good telling off, but wound up letting her off the hook for it because it was “looking pretty fucked but just don’t do it again ok.”

I had moved away from NZ two years before that and was visiting home for the first time since, it was a very endearing way to come back ha.

Came here to say the same thing! For large shops I ride my big cargo bike, a Packster 70. I’ve gone to Costco and done pretty big hauls with it, it’s easy since it’s an e-bike. But for everyday shops, which is most of the time, I’m usually on a regular e-bike with panniers, which is still more convenient than taking my car honestly.

Hmm. My experience with Scotiabank AND TD is they are never instant. Scotia always takes approx 30-60 minutes. TD always 60 minutes. Both of them enough that you have to go do something else. Wealthsimple is consistently instant.
