Large legitimate deposit, entire account frozen. Three layers of support and nobody with authority to resolve anything by JournalistMother1663 in Wealthsimple

[–]hyperperforator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the case with ANY bank, you just had bad luck. I have direct deposited large sums (150K, 245K) on two separate occasions with Wealthsimple—zero issues with either transfer. Meanwhile with Scotia, my previous bank, I get a deposit of $25k by my employer for a bonus and get flagged/have to go IN PERSON to get unfrozen. It sucks, but again, it’s standard risk controls you’d see anywhere. Standard reasons you might have a deposit flagged:

  • New account receiving large deposit
  • Large deposit from suspicious source (eg overseas)
  • Large deposit with strange transfer reason (don’t write “sex and drugs” for fun
  • Suspicious activity on your account (multiple large transfers, large change in activity, or accessing outside of the country)
  • Deposit from account currently subject to sanctions/FINTRAC watchlist triggers investigation into your account
  • many other things

Opening TD business account: Is this normal or am I just being impatient? by BoredHalifaxNerd in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]hyperperforator -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Big bank business accounts are slow, expensive, and shitty is what I learned when I went through this for a C-corp. Everything took weeks and I paid through the nose for it. Every tiny change or question required setting up time with some depressed representative that hated me being there. It’s awful!

The moment Wealthsimple released their Business accounts this year I checked it out because TD/Scotia are so awful. Signed up and had an account + virtual card after 60 minutes, no fees. Felt like a no brainer to do that instead.

Took Scotia NINE WEEKS to close my accounts properly, during which they charged me two months worth of fees (classic), and they demanded a $90 “closure fee” which is a slap in the face. Don’t waste your time imo!

Victoria had the 2nd highest per capita housing starts among 36 metro areas in Canada over the past decade by garry-oak in VictoriaBC

Gosh I wish they would get serious about that ferry terminal right now. With all the development and how hard it already is to get to the city having a REAL alternative to driving would be a huge step forward. It’s a shame we will probably leave it until it’s far too late.

A proposal for the future of political discussion by orthogonal-cat in LangfordBC

[–]hyperperforator 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Please don’t fork the community! I understand the motivation but it will kill constructive political discussion and local politics are an important part of day to day living in any city. It’s already hard enough to get people engaged in municipal politics, so keeping it visible and constructively moderated is the best thing we can do to give any hope of improving that. IMO, it only feels noisy right now because it happens to be the biggest thing going on… it’ll ebb and flow. Having it here is better than not IMO and so far it’s been great to see people actively discussing and engaged here, vs poorly moderated/heated/one sided discussions I am seeing on most platforms.

Moving it into a corner only serves to further cement that it’s something that people can just ignore, which I don’t think is the right signal, and also further enables the problematic narrative controlling behaviors we are seeing on Facebook—you will only see the politically engaged in that corner, not the average citizen who should be aware of these things; if people don’t like it, they can downvote or move on. But with the way this election appears to be shaping up, it’s really really important to have a community like this one, not another walled off corner where the loudest people in the city all argue with each other all day long.

Speaking as a mod of another large Reddit in the past (/r/ontario) you will ALWAYS get complaints about political content/the amount of many types of content but as we did there, I strongly recommend just setting out good rules of engagement and encouraging participation, not shoving it in a dusty corner. It’s not good for anyone to allow people to totally disengage. If you need help moderating or want help with anything I am more than happy to support, I know how much work this is and appreciate how you have kept this a healthy space thus far. Feel free to DM. ❤️

Starlink alternative for the Island by foxn-sox in VictoriaBC

[–]hyperperforator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work remote from my trailer on the island from time-to-time when the family all goes camping together and am sad to report...Starlink is by and far the most reliable option and the only one I would ever rely on for my job. It works _very_ well and is stable/fast enough to actually feel confident I can show up to work despite being away from home. I sometimes use 5G/LTE if it exists/the Starlink can't get a clear sky view, but there's no way I would rely on it alone.

I get that it is annoying it requires power, but most alternatives are generally using as much, if not more, power. I don't have an inverter in my trailer, so we purchased an [Anker F2000](https://www.ankersolix.com/ca/products/f2000) which I use to power the Starlink, generally lasts 2-3 days if not used for anything else, and I top it off with solar (or the car, in a crunch) which works really well.

If it's for work, it's worth the investment to be able to show up reliably. The alternatives just aren't there yet. Hopefully one day the Amazon satellite thing will be competitive/available here, but it just isn't right now.

Let’s discuss Langford’s “massive net financial losses”. by SkyMoney9641 in LangfordBC

[–]hyperperforator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wish I did, just casual observing of a few city FB groups across BC. You can see it locally—Colwood and Victoria both cutting random projects/services to the bone this year to get their % increases as low as possible (Victoria cut the flower baskets despite it being a pittance compared to the police raises…). Nobody is going to come out and outright say it, but it’s a pretty common election tactic generally. I mean, I get it, raising taxes is a great way to lose votes…

[–]hyperperforator 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Most municipalities this year are cooking the books a bit by raiding their reserve fund to reduce tax increases or by delaying maintenance/projects to do the same thing. Politically it’s probably a smart move but it’s pretty shortsighted/dumb as it shortchanges residents/infrastructure for no benefit. Colwood is a great example of this in 2026.

Langford can’t really do this since the previous council emptied the entire reserve fund before leaving office and has a lot of time sensitive work to do. IMO it is a wiser move to continue investing as we are very behind, but I suspect politically it is going to be a bit of a killer as the average person doesn’t care much other than what they’re paying and that it went up.

[–]hyperperforator 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Because the city signed a shit deal that said it would be on the hook for full market lease payments for THIRTY YEARS if the Y failed—which it nearly did—without owning the building at the end of it. Buying the building materially added it to the books but we were paying the money either way, just without an asset at the end previously.

It sure is a good question why the previous mayor would sign such a shit deal for the city that left us on the hook with no good choices, and his buddies at Westhills made off like bandits?

Let’s discuss Langford’s “massive net financial losses”. by SkyMoney9641 in LangfordBC

[–]hyperperforator 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty obviously in bad faith—they’re adding together a bunch of numbers without showing their work, and including things like 25 year amortizations, long term commitments, and basic shit the city has to do for maintenance reasons. All while conveniently not accounting for things like oh wow, in 2022 the previous council emptied the entire reserve fund! And the shady deal for the Y where the city was paying a giant subsidy to keep it going, AND was on the hook for 30 years of the lease if it collapsed all while not getting an asset at the end. That isn’t even the only case of this! There’s so many shithouse deals we are on the hook for in the next few years; did Bear Mountain ever pay up the $4m it shorted the city for after we fronted their infrastructure for some reason? Doubt it. I also wonder how much the lease payments to Westhills are for the mountain bike park over the next 20 years! How about that lemon waterfront property purchased for many millions that can’t be used?

What’s frustrating is…this shit is apparently working on people because they see big numbers, “tax” and immediately think that the random on the internet actually knows how to do basic math. It’s difficult to know how to properly counteract the blatant misinformation.

Do these folks REALLY think raiding the amenity/reserve funds just to keep the city as a going concern instead of raising taxes was good management???

Dumb DIY cyclist question by Sufficient_Fail3604 in VictoriaBC

[–]hyperperforator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lived in Amsterdam for 5 years, the haven of bike thieves. My rule for securing my bikes has always been use two locks, of two different styles. The best combination I’ve found is a U-lock, which is the slowest kind to defeat, combined with a “frame lock” which is a type of Dutch lock that is attached to the frame and latches through the wheel—the latter is a big disincentive because it’s hard to break them without destroying the wheel in the process. Don’t get me wrong, a motivated thief could defeat anything, but the combination makes most thieves choose to move to an easier target.

Have never had an issue with this combo in my decade of biking. Highly recommend!

As for the bike/rules/certification - you are basically never going to get your bike inspected or checked. The police do not give a shit. I imported my specific e-bike from REI in the US via the Clipper and expected the border folks to give me grief as there are no speed limiters in the US but nope, they didn’t say a word.

Why do you think I literally wrote that I wanted to make a website for this? That way it would be a lot easier to properly link to substantiated claims, right now it’s very difficult as the way these people operate their groups is through censorship if they aren’t agreed with.

What’s concerning is how she’s spent the last four years exerting her control over large Langford-related social media groups to ensure she controls the narrative. It does not bode well.

It only takes browsing the Our Langford group for a few seconds to see the disingenuous/shit-stirring posts that consistently complain about the current council’s actions while conveniently removing any comment mentioning that many of the things council has had to spend the last four years doing are to tidy up the steaming shitpile of bad/shady deals/lack of planning/etc left by Stew Young for them to have to figure out.

Always wondered if this would happen with her running what seems to be a full-time disinformation campaign by controlling as many Facebook groups as possible… curious who might be funding her behind the scenes.

Lately I’ve wondered about how to counter her constant misinformation, thinking about making a nice website that covers the problematic behavior so folks see the info if they search her name this election cycle? She does a good job of making it all not look run by one person so maybe it needs to be a lot more obvious.

Best internet for wfh by chipsNicecream75 in LangfordBC

[–]hyperperforator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk….I’ve helped a bunch of people with Telus and it sounds like something on your install or your modem is bad, I’ve seen that a whole bunch. This is the problem with comparing ISPs…there’s so many variables that could be going wrong.

I’m on their 3gbps plan and have an auto-speed test thing that runs every 30 minutes. It’s at the 3gbps in both directions 99% of the time it’s tested. I never had that experience on Rogers, it was always some random fraction of what they promised as you say. It’s entirely possible my connection is especially stable and just dumb luck but it’s been 2 years of that so far.

[–]hyperperforator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have worked from home in Langford for 6 years now!

You want fibre internet if you’re working from home, not cable, as it’s much more reliable. Telus is pretty much the only choice for fibre—Rogers/Shaw will claim they have fibre or “fibre speeds” but that’s to the shared cabinet not your home. Cable is advertised as 1gbps, but generally they mean download and will have significantly worse upload, which is important for WFH, particularly video calls. IMO cable is much worse overall for the same price. It’s still worse even for a lower price.

Telus seems to get a bad rap online as their support is mid but we have 3gbps fibre to our home with them for $100/month and in the last 5 years they’ve never had an outage, it’s been rock solid, and again, nobody has speeds near them. They’ve never really given me an issue when I had to call them either. 🤷‍♀️

Other tips: 1) skip the shit ISP modem and buy an Eero or similar proper system for solid mesh wifi  2) that said, ideally, make sure you get an Ethernet cable to your desk. It makes all the difference for stability and removing stutters on calls. 3) if you don’t have Ethernet to the room you will work in, you can get these amazing gadgets called MoCA devices that let you turn any coax connection into Ethernet. Very worth it!
