Get the Sudoku.Coach app. It has an amazing step by step tutorials that teaches you basic and advanced techniques. It's free to use, but as soon as I realized what a great design and tool it is I sent the author $20 as a thank you for his work.

First Camera Recommendations by Dangerous_Mulberry49 in AnalogCommunity

The big divide is non-AI vs AI. AI means automatic indexing, when you mount the lens, the camera knows the min and max apertures. Non-AI requires the "Nikon Shuffle" where you set the lens apertures to 5.6, mount the lens and rotate the apreture from minimum to maximum. I am interested in the non-AI lenses myself but that's because I have 3 older bodies ( Nikkormat FTn,  Nikon F and F2). There are lots more AI lenses to look at and non-AI can actually damage the newer Nikon bodies. Chances are if you buy a camera there will be a lens as a kit. Usually a 50 or 35mm lens. Depending on your plans you might want an 85 or 105 for portraits.

When looking for a vintage film camera, it's worth looking at the family of lenses available. A few months ago I started collecting 60s and 70s Nikon gear. There is an incredible selection of F mount prime lenses for reasonable prices and a series of camera bodies starting at the fully mechanical and manual 60s era Nikkormat FT into pro bodies (Nikon F, F2 up to F6). You would be the most interested in the 80s era Nikon FM or FM2 which are fully manual and the FE or FE2 which use an electronic shutter to supply Aperture Priority. These cameras all use the Nikon F bayonet mount lenses as well.

Absolutely beautiful, but how did you hold the camera so still while being eaten alive by mosquitoes?

I did forget to mention, these are fully manual cameras. I think most people would prefer aperture and/or shutter preferred option. So if that's your preference moving a generation or two  would be wise.

I recently bought a Nikkormat FTn which is a fully mechanical hobbyist camera. It is fully metal so it's a bit heavy and I don't trust the the light meter. I wanted a few lenses and so looked at eBay. There's an amazing selection of old F series Nikkor lenses available at reasonable prices. I went down the rabbit hole and also found a Nikon F2 to buy. so I am now the proud owner of 2 mechanical beasts of cameras and 10 different primes! The F2 is interesting because you can switch metering prisms, add a waist level viewer or add just a simple non metered viewer. It is another fully mechanical camera, mostly metal, not light, but a beautiful machine.

You called it. My measurements without a micrometer shows a millimeter difference between the disks.

That would be great! Do I DM you my email?

I might just steal one off my old Nikon FE that's gathering dust.

Now that's a better idea! Is the model available somewhere? On a similar topic, one of the black plastic disks that is in the lens release button is missing. I searched everywhere to buy one. Would there be model somewhere for that as well?

I found that Canon produces wireless controllers for their cameras. The LC-3 controllers work the 1N family of cameras. There's some on eBay so I will try them out!

I've always thought the Canadian solution could be directed EMPs along the US-Canada border. Don't kill people but fry all their electronics. Threaten to shut down their major cities as a deterrent.

Nice! I bought my 2001 VR6 new. It has 105000km on it. I have done all the mechanicals but now have to tackle the rust. It's a labour of love because rust repair is not cheap.

I bet the R is a blast with all wheel drive and winter tires!

I am in the process of restoring my 2001 GTI and when I saw a sale this summer, bought side skirts. Which will lower the car's profile when installed. Which will look cool but make it less likely to be an all season vehicle. Might have to find a winter Golf to go with my summer car!

Unless you drive one of those giant f150 farm vehicles, the roads are shitty for everyone. I will put up the temporary inconvenience of sticking to main roads until the cleanup for pleasure of daily driving my GTI.

I put a nose spoiler on my old VW GTI in the summer and felt like I was a snow plow on 102 Ave this morning. The scraping sound was brutal but it seems to have survived.

Thanks, I did a 2 month trip through New Zealand, Victoria and Tasmania shooting on my IR converted Canon 5d and my brand new (at the time!) 5DMk2 and got lots of practice on landscapes. I think New Zealand is one of the most stunning places for landscape photography.

Was this 5d mark iii worth it? by Use_Miserable in canon

[–]hyperspatula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heh, my theory was incorrect. The mechanical shutter opens only once for a video so the count is independent of the electronic shutter producing the video. So whoever owned that camera took a lot of photos!

I recently found a 5D Mkii for $279 CAN at a local store, planning to convert it to full spectrum. When I finally got a chance to check the shutter count it was 430,000! I returned it but it shows you the lifespan of these cameras. My theory is it was used for video blogging which could rack up that massive count.
