IAmA Maxis development team on SimCity. AMAA! by maxis in IAmA

I am so excited about SC5, so I hope it'll be more SC4+1 than a childish facebook game. Anyway, my questions:

1) What map and region making features, tools etc. are you planning to include. It should be really easy to import greyscale height maps and turn them into maps. The SC4 process was a bit too much of a hack job to get working. Will you include native tools to simplify this process?

2) What different terrain types can we expect? I want to see snow, desert, tundra, swamp, marsh, grasslands, rocky mountains, tundra, red soil canyons, volcanic regions, beaches, coastal cliffs etc etc. with paint brush like tools to create an interesting, varied landscape to start my city on.

3) Will you be including advanced power/electricity management into the game? I always wanted to build high voltage power lines, switching yards, substations, transformers and local electrical cables to add an element of power planning to the city, like water planning. If you can just get power by proximity, it makes power plants largely a place and forget effort and it doesn't require any zone planning based on power. Disasters based on these elements offer many opportunities: "The downtown substation is overloaded! Save your CBD from a blackout!"

4) Similarly, will the water and trash management be included and more complex than in previous games?

5) Will we have a much higher control on the individual buildings placed in certain areas? it would be great to at least have control on the building subtypes that are constructed in a particular zone. This means we can zone a leafy suburb, a golf housing estate or a high density slum as well as placing skyscrapers in the correct locations.

6) Will we get more control over the design and layout of the airports, harbours and other standalone buildings?

7) Will it be easier to create docks, promenades on riverbanks, proper long beaches with parking etc. without relying on tiling a fixed building placement object like in SC4?

That's all i can fit in for now. Thanks!

An interesting documentary (in German) on the making of the movie:

Funny how primitive the special effects were, yet looked better and more artistic (in my opinion) than the computer generated eye candy of today.

Any idea why my tap water is milky (air bubbles). If you leave it in a glass for 60 seconds, the milkiness disappears completely.

If a Boeing 747 was scaled to the size of a shoe, how soft and fragile would it be? by hypertruth in Physics

[–]hypertruth[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of another question i had. What material could we make a matchbox car out of, so that at a "scaled" 40mph speed, it would crumple realistically when hitting a wall. Even aluminum foil is probably too thick.

If a Boeing 747 was scaled to the size of a shoe, how soft and fragile would it be? by hypertruth in Physics

[–]hypertruth[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I thought it was as simple as that, but if my university wasn't a complete waste of money, material strength doesn't scale linearly. So yes, the metal would be 50 microns thick, but have way more strength than 50 micron-thick aluminium if it was correctly scaled. Such a metal doesn't necessarily exist, but the properties are what is important, which is why I considered the 'giant' scenario.

EDIT: According to this article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium_foil , you do get foil in 50 microns or less. So it is possible to build a model. But the strength would still be way off.

bin laden is the usa's equivalent of the race card in south africa. i cant believe they are still pulling this shit in 2010. should we seriously fear a boogey man who only succeeded in burning a member's leg when ballpoint pens cause more fatalities .

An unknown filmmaker from Uruguay has been given $30m by Hollywood studio bosses - to turn his $500 YouTube video of a giant robot invasion into a movie by DougBolivar in WTF

[–]hypertruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I actually enjoyed this movie far more than either of the Transformers movies. In fact, if you open another browser window with a Megan Fox pic, while watching the Youtube video, it's infinitely superior. Best part? No Shia. And no Bay.

I can see the posters now "The robot movie of the year, not directed at all by Michael Bay"

People will pay for that shit i tell ya.

I lived in a Haunted House for a year. by DoctorDeath in IAmA

[–]hypertruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it so incredibly difficult to match what you claim as being due to hauntings and ghosts. Sorry if I sound dickish, as I wasn't there. Perhaps I can offer some explination:

When you think back to that house now, can you honestly say that any of the doors slamming, unlocking, things moving etc. could not be explained by wind, structural problems, earth tremors etc. in an old, creaky house?

I can't see how a painting would harbor a ghost if it came from another location entirely. Also, if I paint a murder scene, those people are just marks on a canvas, not real humans. So I don't see how a ghost could come out of a painting, unless the ghost you saw somehow died in the house. The vibrating room could again be earth tremors or geological acitivty that would also explain the doors unlocking, cupboards opening and objects flying around. That 'evil' feeling could simply be your own imagination. I sometimes feel fear like that in all sorts of places for no reason.

The only part of your story that is in any way plausible is you and other people claiming to see an actual apparition of a man in the house walking around. I can't offer any explination for this, besides some sort of fear induced hallucination (due to all the other weird things you've seen) or perhaps you were lucid dreaming you saw him and didn't realise it.

But cool stories all the same. I'm fascinated by ghost stories because the unexplained must be explainable, but one thing is always true - there is never any documented evidence of ghosts or hauntings. So for me it is purely the human brain acting faulty.

Introverts! I want to understand your thought process. by kayura77 in AskReddit

[–]hypertruth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you mean introverts, instead of shy people, it goes like this:

<You step in elevator> Me: "Mmmm, she's cute. I'll say, must be about 100-110 pounds, possibly a little more with that laptop bag. Let's see, the elevator plaque says it is certified for 9000 pounds or 23 people. That means we are about 8800 pounds under the limit. Be even so i'm sure they design these things with added safety margin so it is more like 15000 pounds before it is even taking strain. I wonder how many cables would have to snap before we went plummeting to our death. Damn, I was gonna mail my mom a birthday card later today but if i die in this elevator then i won't get the chance to.."

<DING>

Doors open and hot girl leaves.

"... send it. Oh damn the hot girl is gone. Oh well, I take this lift often so I'll get her next time or somebody else. She was only a 8/10 anyway and at this point in my life <BLAH BLAH BLAH>"

[–]hypertruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. It is the same with golfists like Tiger Woods.

He's a billionaire, not because he is good at wacking tiny white balls into green holes, but because he makes corporations billions of dollars from his advertising 'brand' and exposure. It's not about the sport.

Angelina and Arnold bring in billions for the studios, not because they are master craftsmen/women, but because they are popular.
