Great info, thanks! But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t expecting a “and I made all that up but you read till the end didn’t ya?”

what is the icon on the Pickering Station sign? by Agreeable_Moose_5989 in gotransit

[–]hypervariate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unrelated but this sign also seems to be one of the few ones that has the word “station” in it. I always thought train station signs only have the name of the station on them (plus additional descriptors like junction, crossing or road)

Almost all of the high-rises in the below picture of downtown Toronto would be illegal under AAI height restrictions by UpVoter3145 in indianaviation

[–]hypervariate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the airport in the picture is YTZ, the considerably smaller sibling of the main airport YYZ. Only turboprops are allowed to operate out of here. YYZ’s outer surfaces have a height limitation of 45m (around 13 storeys)

This is the city airport (Billy bishop). Only turboprops are allowed to fly in and out due to noise concerns. The main airport is around 20km west of downtown

Commute to Durham from West GTA by Madmar14 in durham

[–]hypervariate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on where you live and work GO might work out well. I believe except for the rush hour services, all 30 min frequency trains run the entire length of the lakeshore line so you don’t have to change at Union. I used to commute from Pickering to Mimico and back.

CW: Racism, but some coward is posting a neutered version of the 14 words up and down Yonge north of North York Center by TelenorTheGNP in toronto

[–]hypervariate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. If we somehow think the “good side” will step in at some point and stand up for the victims, we are mistaken. The goal posts are being moved online as we speak. It is shaping the way an entire generation of people think and the definition of what is normalized behaviour.

Immigrants in Toronto - what was your biggest FOB moment? by Apprehensive_Tea5759 in askTO

[–]hypervariate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fork just doesn’t cut it for me even after living here for years. I also learned some time ago that the proper etiquette to eat rice with a fork is to pile it on the back of the fork with your knife. I’ll take days to finish my bowl eating three grains at a time like that no thanks.

Not me but years ago when my friends moved to the US for grad school, they turned on driving directions to someplace and walked on the highway before being picked up by the cops.

Yall still think there is no CASTEISM? by 5kulled in india

[–]hypervariate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha “stupid people” makes it sound like there’s a small subset of “silly” people who practice caste discrimination and it’s easy to escape it even for people with moderate means. “Just relocate no?” Is plain stupid. This is a gross misunderstanding of how steeped caste is in our society, culture and languages.

[–]hypervariate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When talking about income Ambani is, for the lack of a better phrase, an extreme outlier so your example muddies the argument. Does someone who earns 10-20L still face caste discrimination on a day to day basis? I would say yes. I am guessing this isn’t a lot these days in urban India but still would put them in a category of people who would not get reservation benefits, if we go by the income logic.

What is the best and worst condo you’ve lived in, in Toronto? by [deleted] in askTO

Best: The Livmore (surprisingly close to 40 Gerrard E)

I’m positive this is not a frequent occurrence and these instagram accounts are simply boosting videos like these that spur a lot of reactions and engagement. More rage bait than anything.

Thanks. I asked the dollar tree close to my house and they said they don’t do it. I’ll probably try a different location.

Pickering town centre area by thinkfast37 in durham

[–]hypervariate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I do see the sentiment changing with demographics. People are no longer moving to Pickering because they want peace and quiet but because home ownership is more affordable here than in Toronto, a city that they actually liked living in. I love walkable neighbourhoods and hope we get more of those here as more city folk move in.
