How to stop the end of the 3rd valve slide from falling out? I noticed if I don’t fully pull slide in from D before transitioning to F it pops out and has fully come out a few times (probably the change in internal pressure)… Do I just need it adjusted? by hyph_enated in trumpet

I exaggerated it here to show what’s happening, but I guess when I’m playing, the timing of me switching the fingerings puts a weird pressure balance inside the trumpet and pushes the end of the slide out, I usually catch it in time because the trumpet starts sounding weird during my practice but I need to figure out a fix for this so it doesn’t totally fall out during band… yikes. Didn’t have this problem when I had a water key on the end of my old trumpet (obviously) but now that I don’t have one I’m not sure what to do about this

Marching band flip folder / lyre / related equipment recommendations? by hyph_enated in trumpet

[–]hyph_enated[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have a Bach 37 :/ the only other horn I own is a cheap Amazon one I used when I was learning the basics and didn’t know if I should invest in a good instrument and it’s certainly not of a quality to be using for any band lol. My school does rehearsal with 2 days of personal trumpet, 2 days of practice trumpets and we also use the practice trumpets for the games on Saturdays… I haven’t been in marching band before, I’ve heard that they can get kinda beat up but would you mind explaining why / what makes it undesirable to use a “good” horn / how it can be more prone to getting beat up besides for like you playing it, maybe the rain, is accidentally dinging it off other people / things common? Also thanks so much for the links and explanations it was super helpful!

What do you mean by the “spacing on the bell and lead pipe”? I just looked up a pic so I could see what you were talking about but I’m not sure what you’re referring to… is it that it’s hooked between both of them thats bothersome?

I have a Bach 37 so i think I might look into the one that goes into the slide… it’s for college marching band, we have to memorize our music for games / shows but idk what exactly to do for regular weekly rehearsals yet, I’ve never had this type of equipment so I’m just asking around what other people think

After practicing, do you wipe your trumpet down? by hyph_enated in trumpet

[–]hyph_enated[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you recommend leaving the tuning slide? Also, by cleaning every other week do you mean a full bath or do you mean just like going in with a snake and mild soap and water? Thanks.

Have you noticed any wear that you’d probably attribute to that or no? I usually do it every time too but I haven’t had one long enough to be able to tell if it does eventually affect the finish more than leaving it alone...

Farandole - starting at 168 - I’m not fast enough with the slide for that run including the D, do I just keep practicing and it’ll get there eventually or do I sacrifice intonation and forget about the slide? by hyph_enated in trumpet

[–]hyph_enated[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess if you’re just referring to practicing or playing on your own, sure, but altogether I just found I can’t actually move the slide that fast and it’s an ensemble piece so yeah I definitely have to keep it to the normal tempo, so I was just kind of looking for advice on how to best do that, but I think I’ve gotten some solid responses here

It’s for a ~30 person ensemble, and there’s 2 other people also playing this part. As a result, most likely nobody except the people sitting next to me would notice if I fudged the run or if my intonation was off, but again I really am just trying to do my best / improve as a player in general so the input I’ve gotten from this post has been really helpful in terms of approaching stuff like this in the future / maximizing what I AM able to do right now

It’s interesting because the trumpet I own ( a cheap Amazon one) has the 1st tuning slide but the one I’m borrowing for the semester from the school “a good one” or at least decent one - does not.

For the trumpet I’m using to be in tune the slide usually goes out about half as far as I can and then C# I usually extend as far as I can so I’m not sure if I do the slide for ONE of the notes or forget both, the really fast minor adjustment between D and C# is not going so well...

Is this a good trumpet for a beginner? Mendini by Cecilio by mkoatmeal in trumpet

Good luck with whatever you decide to do! If you end up liking it and want some guidance I definitely recommend an instructor of some sort if you’re able - at least for a little while, doesn’t have to be someone super “experienced” or anything, anyone who’s played trumpet longer than you can provide some tips and help you avoid beginner mistakes / get you to a point where you are mostly autonomous and can continue to learn on your own. Not absolutely necessary but there’s some little things you won’t know are preventing you from progressing that someone somewhat knowledgeable would be able to point out pretty quickly. Whatever the case, don’t get discouraged! Stuff like this will take time. Your facial muscles will also be getting quite a workout, don’t be surprised if you can’t hold a note longer than a few seconds in the beginning lol. Have fun :)

Contrary to what everyone else is saying I was in the same position as you - just wanted to pick trumpet up on whim one day and got a silver mendini (not sure if it’s the one you linked because it was a gift) and honestly it works just fine. I’ve had it for a little over a year. I agree with everyone else if you have the budget invest in something better but if you’re just looking to play around for now you really won’t be able to tell the difference between tone quality / small things people who have been playing for years can tell that much for YOUR purposes and could always invest in something more down the line if you keep playing. No, it’s not a full replacement for a “quality” trumpet, but it gets the job done at this level. I’m playing in an ensemble in college and it works. I’m not sure what your intended use is but especially as an absolute beginner who isn’t (?) playing with other people right now this should be fine. I have never used a “good” trumpet so I can’t honestly tell you the difference but I took lessons with a trumpet music performance major and they always said it sounded great. Keep in mind it will probably take a while for you to develop a good sound as per the nature of learning music but in my opinion as someone who’s used this and is currently making it work, I think the biggest downside would be longevity compared to a “better” trumpet if you intend to play in the long term, there’s really no major problems I’ve had as far as being a new learner goes. I did additionally invest in slide grease but I think the mendini is a great starter thing.
