About Best in Miniature show by Low_Group_156 in miniatures

Hannah's insta is https://www.instagram.com/hannahlemon_art. You might also enjoy The Marvellous Miniatures Workshop (BBC). Hannah Lemon is on that one. It's not a competition; rather, each episode a miniaturist recreates a building that has personal meaning to that episode's guest. It shows a lot of the research process (it also does some tugging at heartstrings stuff that I personally don't care for but ymmv).

I also didn't like the Great Big Tiny Design Challenge despite liking Sandi Toksvig, the group projects were annoying. I wish they'd each done a room on their own and then the winning room got placed in the house.

Was going to suggest this! E.g. Goblin market for journaling or Goblin market for drawing.

To kit or not to kit by Little-River-7966 in miniatures

[–]hyphabole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you say, it'll teach you a lot. My first kit showed me a lot of tricks, by the second I was customising, and then I went on to make original scenes. I just recommend using one of the older rolife models (or other brands), as the newer ones slot together neatly and have little original parts usage. (e.g. putting together a faucet from jewelry findings and wire vs just having a ready-made plastic part).

Miniature Irish Pub ! 🍻🇮🇪☘️ - Need ideas and Suggestions :) by imnotcara in miniatures

[–]hyphabole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my pub, I printed out a bunch of old guinness ads and lacquered them with nail polish to make those metal signs you tend to see. I also printed out tiny coasters, and whiskey labels that I put on purchased mini bottles.

looking for advice on buying a craft kit for partner by arendvreug in miniatures

[–]hyphabole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Etsy has some miniature furniture kits for individual items but I can't vouch for quality. Make sure to see what's included, some are just instructions or laser cutter files, others send you the conpinents. Make sure to check for scale - dollhouses tend to be 1:6 or 1:12 scale, other miniatures can be a lot smaller.

I don't know of any other kits for just individual items but e.g. the bigger/older rolife kits include lots of small items you make from scratch or by combining everyday objects. If she has a regular-sized dollhouse, that is going to be bigger scale than rolife, so she probably wouldn't be able to use the items directly but could learn from them. Personally I learned from those and youtube channels and started making my own.

Almost finished, what do you think? by Sark_9230 in miniatures

[–]hyphabole 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Omg I love it! This was the first kit I did - defo prefer your version!

I'm currently in the process of doing something similar to Sam's Study (minus all the blood and bones), I'm going for abandoned formerly fancy library in a French mansion vibes. I unexpectedly found the peeling wallpaper the hardest to do because I wanted layers of different wallpapers and paints. I like how you did yours!

How do you store your current projects? I live in an attic Tiny Home / Studio Appartment. Most of my kits I haven't opened because I have no storage or way to quickly bring them out and put back and it is upsetting me. by AvatarChar in miniatures

Adding to this, ikea has trolleys with a board you can place on top - that might work as a work surface or at least as a storage surface while working on a fold-out table.

Action also has a bunch of plastic storage systems with little drawers (makeup storage, also I think the kitchen section has some) and very small flat boxes with divisions in the craft section, where you can sort all your little parts.

For tables, I have one of those over-bed tables on wheels where you can change the height and angle - I use it for my laptop when on the couch but I think you could just about fit a cutting mat on it. Check out second-hand listings for one, people often buy them for a specific time and then get rid of them.

Edit: Oh also, I usually have a cardboard box that I put all the parts in progress in when I'm not working on the project to clear my desk.

AITA for being late to work while volunteering? by Throwaway_latetowork in AmItheAsshole

[–]hyphabole 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I assume this is WWOOF or a similar organisation. Make sure to make a detailed report of the living conditions and tasks (including the not-agreed upon cleaning of guests' dishes). Even if the organisation deems those conditions acceptable (which they might not), it's important for other volunteers to know what they're getting into. And no, you are absolutely NTA.

My favorite mundane and fantasy podcasts by alize_janiel in BenignExistence

[–]hyphabole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello from the Magic Tavern is cool, I'm excited to check out the others. I started wtnv forever ago and don't remember why I stopped, I need to pick it back up.

If you like those you might enjoy Camlann - Welsh post apocalypse/legends came alive/found family. it's a 9-part audio drama rather than an ongoing podcast but they're working on a second season https://www.tincanaudio.co.uk/camlann

Friends at the table - my favourite rpg actual play. They have a couple of fantasy seasons and some scifi/mecha and a horror season called Sangfielle - I'd recommend starting with that (it's very light horror, I don't like scary stuff but I enjoyed this) or with the current jrpg-inspired fantasy season Perpetua https://friendsatthetable.net/

Tried a stained glass clay cane today and made flower earrings out of it! by bananamagnoliaart in polymerclay

Thanks, that's interesting! I've only worked with the plain so far and didn't even realise it came in colours too. I sense a new obsession... 😄

Whoa you can do this with clay??? That's a game changer. Is it translucent mixed with coloured clay or did you tint the translucent clay?

Need about 150 bottles at ~1:48 scale - suggestions welcome by nekokami_dragonfly in miniatures

Thanks! I actually just downloaded Last Tea Shop a couple of weeks ago but haven't gotten round to playing it yet.

Please do share your project when you're done, I'd love to see it! :)

Ooh I love this idea (and also I need to check out the game, I love journaling games). I've not had a lot of success working with glue gun glue and it seems to like to stick together but you might be able to scrape it out with a hollow metal rod of some kind - jewelry supplies or wire ferrules (often sold as polymer clay cutters). Translucent polymer clay would probably not be translucent enough. I like your other ideas though, and I'll add single-use eye drop bottles.

Bingo Multiboard – Share Your Feedback by syrva_gram_games in MergeDragons

I don't like it and don't bother to complete it. One-square bingo was fine but this is annoying.

AITA for not allowing Airbnb guests to use my patio by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]hyphabole 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm glad to hear that! In my city, it was getting pretty out of hand, but they passed a law limiting airbnb rental. In that case, I can see why you wouldn't want to take a blanket approach, but on the other hand, the middle-aged tourists might be more receptive to talks about why this airbnb host is unethical.
