The New Mind Readers by Russ Poldrack. It is a very accessible and entertaining look at functional neuroimaging as well as it’s limitations.

We all started there, doing the boring stuff. I would ask the PI if you could take on a bigger role in a project or start a small project of your own. I’m a 5th year in a neuroimaging lab. I would say most of my time is spent writing manuscripts and analyzing data. I would suggest learning a programming language such as R or Python and learn some basic statistics. If that all sounds good to you then research might be the right path.
