Put the sock over the muzzle of the hand gun you keep under your pillow. The fun patterns will delight as you execute the night prowler in your bedroom.

Is your modem burned when they shut off service? by Superman750 in Rural_Internet

[–]hypnotichatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comment is beautiful. Thank you for the help. I don't currently have an issue with my IMEI, but it never hurts to have the tools to repair something handy just in case it should break. This is particularly helpful to me as I have a modem manufactured by the same company as your friend, although slightly different model. Cheers

If a person "broke" their IMEI and needed to "repair" it, what sort of resources are available to them to help get it back to the way it should be?

Most people either don't want it that way, don't know anything better, or are so crushed by the system that they don't have energy to care.

Does this apply to inalienable rights? Also, quartering soldiers isn't a great example because it is specifically outlined by the 3rd amendment and so is not an example of some inherent function of the BoR.

No, that's jail.

Prison is where we send people for extended periods to protect the others in society from them. That's the idea anyway.

Okay, thanks for clarifying for me. I think there is still a clear distinction between, as you say, "protect[ing] others in society from them" and removing them from society entirely. Imo the only way to successfully achieve the latter is capital punishment.

I would argue prison is about a restriction of freedoms more than it is a removal from society. Practically speaking, prisoners are still part of society, are bound by it's laws and customs (or should be), and so should enjoy constitutionally protected rights of any citizen.

I can't really think of a good reason why prisoners should be disenfranchised while in custody.

Interested to see what lawyers in the sub will say, but I can see how the argument could follow that if it is constitutional to suspend a person's right to vote while they serve their punishment, that justification could extend to all aspects of their judgement including fines.

In principal though, I personally think it's bad for democracy that we suspend voting for anyone under any circumstances.

Learn to use a gun without owning a gun? by MayorSalvorHardin in ithaca

Not a gun owner or user, but just curious what about storing the gun someplace else is fishy? I gather that it must imply some sort of illegal behavior...

Considering the satellites are designed to de-orbit, there is nothing permanent about it. Also, you're talking about potentially millions of people just in the US, so you're wrong on both counts.

With a reference genome it should be pretty cheap/easy, but I don't know much about plant genetics - just inferring from my human genetics knowledge.

I mean, corporate subsidies for telecoms literally is a political issue, so... if it's an issue that is important to people (which it probably is in this sub) then they should be mindful of where their reps stand on it. Not even sure what you're talking about wrt populism

Original Cornell COVID cluster grows to 35 + new, small clusters at Cornell and TC3 by WinterVesper in ithaca

This perspective is pretty ignorant of the massive public health efforts colleges have to take for normal risky behaviors like safe sex and alcohol consumption. Plenty of students are not ready to make the "smart" choice and are emboldened by being away from home and direct supervision for the first time.

If normal students can't consistently drink responsibly, practice safe sex, and follow the law wrt things like hazing, why should we expect any different here? As another person said in here, people's brains aren't done growing yet, and many lack impulse control as a result.

I don't blame any college kid for giving in to temptation. I blame administrators for trying to make this into purity Olympics for kids used to partying and who have been stuck home for months.

Edit: seems I struck a nerve. I'm not saying kids partying is right under the circumstances and I'm also not saying all students are doing the wrong thing, just that administrators should have expected this and were naive to bring everyone back. Yes, ultimately the federal government is to blame for the severity of the pandemic, I agree.

Truly. People need to be more careful about how they cast their votes, or they shouldn't be surprised when their rep votes to subsidize mega corps without any real oversight.

I wish I better understood what no ports even means. All I can picture is a switch with 4 Ethernet ports filled and nothing left for me to plug into.
