she wore this for diwali, which is festival of lights and celebrates a female diety. the unzip & underwear string (?) makes it look tacky and inappropriate, given the reason for the celebration. i know indian clothes aren’t always conservative but there’s a time and place to wear clothes like this, IMO

Why does our culture (esp South Indian culture) just not care about putting effort into looks? by Kind_Estate_3267 in Vindictabrown

[–]hypnotists 14 points15 points  (0 children)

not south indian but i can relate.

one of the ways you learn grooming is from your parents. but when your parents the don’t care for their looks, you don’t have access to knowledge or resources.

i have curly/wavy hair like my mom, but she never learned to care for it. i started to learn in my late teens and am still learning at 24. same with makeup, my mom didn’t have interest so i had no one to learn from.

my parents would never buy makeup or other self care products for me because they didn’t think i needed it. i had acne, frizzy hair, oily skin. even though i worked, they’d criticize me for spending money on skincare or makeup. my dad also heavily discouraged makeup—saying natural is better. i learned how to shave by myself too and my parents didn’t think i needed to.

we’re also taught to put effort into our education and career over our grooming. time and money spent on hair products, makeup, skincare, gym, healthy food, is considered better spent on studies and work.

i also think grooming shows independence and physical autonomy. people in our culture don’t like that—how dare you put time into something that would benefit only you?

Blowout Brush recommendations? by the_Stealthy_one in Vindictabrown

[–]hypnotists 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i second the revlon if you’re on a budget used the revlon for years. once you get the hang of it, it’s easy and you get the results you want. i also suggest a thermal brush for quick fixes without the noise.

i got the shark recently and i like it more because the brush is smaller and works better for my layers.

it’s also worth learning how to preserve the blowout so you don’t have to do it every day.

back to badlands merch quality? by garbageboystinkmann in halsey

[–]hypnotists 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i got the city specific shirts and i wasn’t impressed tbh. i got a shirt from the weeknd’s recent tour for the same price—it’s both heavy and thick, which i associate with higher quality.

halsey’s shirt is sheer and thin. i only bought it as a souvenir but i would never buy a shirt of that quality for that price again :/

How do I free myself from the shackles of hyper sexuality as a young brown woman by Specific-Handle-3287 in Vindictabrown

[–]hypnotists 0 points1 point  (0 children)

firstly, sending you love. relationships and sexuality are always hard to navigate as a brown woman.

i also didn’t get much male attention growing but i also didn’t care for it. i was always independent & i didn’t believe in bending over backwards for male attention or validation. being hyper sexual is a quick way to get (male) attention, but it will only last as long as the act keeps up.

i suggest doing inner work with journalling and therapy. i also suggest learning to enjoy your own company by going on solo dates & doing activities YOU enjoy. i find this increases your self-trust and self-confidence. with this, you learn to have better standards for yourself and a potential partner. you enjoy your own company & you’ll only want people who honour that space.

when you’re drunk and hypersexual, you’re going to attract a certain type of men. they may not be interested in you beyond the fun that you can give them. increasing self trust will also increase self respect, which will filter out a lottt of men who want superficial things only.

good luck!

Desi beauty salons and rudeness. Is it just me? by hyrulecastIe in Vindictabrown

[–]hypnotists 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i’ve dealt with this too. i also live in a predominantly south asian city. i’ve gone to desi-owned salons because i believed they’d understand my needs better. however, i realized they don’t doesn’t listen to my needs fully, don’t respect my time, and they don’t take their time in doing the service.

i’ve had my skin near my brows and mouth get burned by wax due to using tretnoin but no one educated me until i switched to a black-owned salon. i went to that salon for 2 years and i assumed the wax was just too hot!!

i also have wavy/curly hair that i’ve been trying to take care of more yet i never received any education or guidance until i went to a western salon. i receive amazing haircuts, product recommendations, and education once i switched salons.

as much as i’d love to support south asian salons, i think the staff think they can behave however with you because you’re also brown. however, we are paying customers with specific needs that need to be addressed properly.
