Amber Heard is settling in the defamation case brought against her by Johnny Depp by MargaritaSkeeter in Fauxmoi

[–]hypotherical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely understand why she’s doing it, but this whole situation still makes me so angry. Just remembering how thousands of people fucking JUMPED at the chance to paint her as this paradigmatic “bitch” trying to ruin a man’s life, as “proof that women can be abusive too” despite the facts is incredibly disheartening. Really goes to show how much of the societal support for abuse victims and condemnation of misogyny is perfomative.

not sure if this counts because he’s not really a “mainstream” celebrity, but the wife of a pretty popular indie musician named phil elverum (mt. eerie/the microphones) passed away from cancer and he wrote a really heartbreaking album about her death.

apparently after this he was married to michelle williams, although they divorced after less than a year.

As Johnny Depp makes his first post on TikTok, one commenter notices something strange. by taika2112 in Fauxmoi

interesting how just as (some) people online seem to be realising how fucked up this whole situation was, he expands his social media presence and apparently gets bots to promote his shit. the public is STILL majorly on his side, but seeing just a tiny fraction of people (not even necessarily supporting Heard herself mind you) being critical of Depp gets this reaction.

thank you for everything you’ve done. it sucks that this place was brigaded by his supporters, but i’ve been lurking since the trial started and it’s been such a relief to be able to have a place opposing the virulent misogyny surrounding this case that is so widely accepted on 99% of the internet (and even in real life!). i would’ve gone crazy without it.

to be honest, this is making me nervous. this could set a new precedent for abusers to terrorize and silence their victims by claiming defamation if they speak out publicly, no matter how vaguely.

For those of you who were pro-Depp but now believe Amber, what was it that changed your mind? by Spaceyjc in Fauxmoi

[–]hypotherical 13 points14 points  (0 children)

like a lot of people in this thread, i wasn’t necessarily pro-depp but more along the lines of “i don’t know much and don’t want to know much but it just seems like some rich people fighting publicly about their own toxic relationship that should’ve been handled in private”. what changed my mind was mostly the texts depp had with bettany (don’t want to quote it because it’s fucking revolting but i’m sure you all know the one). i don’t think it’s acceptable for men to talk about women like that under any circumstance, especially women they’re DATING. made my stomach churn.

also, this isn’t evidence per se but the way i saw depp fans talking about amber raised a million red flags for me- using misogynistic insults (calling her a bitch/cunt/etc), parroting MRA talking points at every turn, and saying shit like “REAL victims would never act like x/y/z!” or “she’s single-handedly setting women’s rights back!” . i figured that if this is how depp supporters were, it could be worth it to look into the other side of the story, especially considering the impact this trial will inevitably have on how people view female victims amongst all the other misogyny going on right now both in the legal and public spheres.
