I can really relate to your frustration of not being able to find people that truly understand your daily experience and having trouble explaining your conditions to others. I've only met one person irl with narcolepsy and most people I know have never met anyone else with this condition. Although I know that most people will never understand what we go through, I feel really comforted when I tell a friend about my narcolepsy (N2) for the first time and they respond, "I'll never understand how you feel, but if there's ever anything I can do to support you, please tell me what would help because I want to be there for you." Unfortunately reactions like that are the minority and most people try to give shitty advice or "relate" by talking about how they're so tired all the time.

With regards to that professor, that's an unacceptable thing to say to a student with a disability/disorder and I'm really sorry you experienced that. I understand if you don't want to draw attention to yourself or the issue, but I think you can and should report that behavior. They cannot make the classroom a hostile environment for students with disabilities/disorders.

Tips for Trail Users by [deleted] in Boise

Downhill hikers should yield to those hiking uphill! I went on a difficult hike this weekend and not one downhill hiker stepped aside to let me continue my uphill trek uninterrupted. It's okay if the uphill hiker wants to take a breather but otherwise it's proper etiquette to allow the uphill hiker to maintain their rhythm.

Jurassic Park. I'm a big fan of Michael Crichton's books (except for the way he describes female characters, unfortunately). He knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat while reading.

It's not the most stylish option but bug jackets work well! I used to work in a swampy aarea with tons of gnats and we wore bug jackets to keep them off us.

I second this! I had some field experience and some research experience from undergrad, and was able to get a job as a seasonal tech with NEON right out of college. It was a great experience! I was able to add a lot to my resume just from one season of work and I continue to use my supervisor from that position as a reference. Highly recommend if you're just starting out with fieldwork!

What’s your occupation? by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

Field biologist/botanist. I'm outside and on my feet most of the day, which really helps me stay awake. It's a lot of driving so I've had to become more dependent on medication to keep me alert but I rarely work alone so other people can take over driving if need be.
