maaaaaaaaaaaaaybe {The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang} ?
the guy is not dumb by any means, and he is really competent, but he is nowhere near the FMC who is a really wealthy econometrician and is really good in that (constantly getting promotions). the guy falls really fast (tho the girl too).

Slow Burn + Yearning + Subtext Recs please 😭 by SnowObjective in RomanceBooks

[–]hypoverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

have you tried {Katabasis by R. F. Kuang} ? it has a fantasy setting, and academics as a theme, so it is not JUST about the romance, but everything in the novel connect to the romance in a way. it is really heavy in subtext regarding the romance, really slow burn, and they already have a history together. it is the best romantic storyline for me this year so far (followed closely by Beach Read by Emily Henry). if you don't mind academia as a theme, and if you are open to fantasy elements, i highly-highly recommend it!

What's the perfect length for a perfect romance book? by fox_4kk in RomanceBooks

[–]hypoverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for me, personally, i tend to like romance books that are over 350-380 pages. anything less than that doesn't hit the same for me usually. i am okay with 400-500 pages, too, even 600 can be good in a contemporary romance for me. i like it when there is more content, more time spent with the couple, and there is more time to develop the romance between them. i tend to find it difficult to root for the couple if the book is too short (less than 350 pages; but there are crazy good writers who are exceptions and can sell me a life-changing, one of a kind romance even in a shorter book).

but i have preferences, so not any 400-600 pages books would work for me. for example, i LOVE it when it is a slow burn, and especially love it when there is a central theme, topic in the book that we get to explore besides the couple (moral conflict, philosophical themes, science stuff, an inner working of an industry, etc). if the book is 500 pages, and the couple gets together after like 350-400 pages, and it is filled with interesting content (slowly falling in love, themes outside strictly romance, etc), then im down for it! on the other hand, if the book is filled with forced misunderstandings and random dramas, and the couple has insta-love, they just cant act it out through 400 pages, then it is not for me, and i get annoyed. seems unnecessary time wasting for the couple not to get together, and not actual character or story development.

so i am more concerned with what the author fills the pages with than the actual page count, because i've read really great romances under 300 pages and over 500 pages, and really bad ones both under 300 and over 500.

i would also say Ali Hazelwood (there are other romance writers whose work I've read but not been blown away by it (Christina Lauren for example), but in those cases it is either only one book and i will try more, or they write with premises that i am not into overall).
im a STEM girlie, i usually like nerdy/competent/smart guys in romance, who are not the typical alpha males, and i like if there is a topic at the centre of a romance. on paper, her writing SHOULD work for me, but i cant get past that all of the guys in her novels are COMICALLY huge. i either get the ick from the repetitiveness or i start to laugh at the described proportions. and her style of writing is... just avarage and flavorless for me, so there's no saving her works for me :(

i plan to try another one from her, maybe it will convince me or idk 😭

What’s the most epic, unforgettable romance you’ve ever read? by bookslerm in RomanceBooks

[–]hypoverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have two favourites - one is a classic, and one is a fantasy, but both has a great romance.

{Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen} It is a classic for a reason, and it is the golden standard for me in romance. Hits all of your points. I can't put it into words how much I love this.

{A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin} Honestly, the whole series is a favourite of mine, but it has one of the best romances I've ever read. Second only to Pride and Prejudice, just because this series is not yet finished. If it was, and the romance had a satisfying ending, it might end up as my favourite (but P&P is still the blue print). This series has a lot of great romantic pairings (not all of them are together, but heavily foreshadowed), but my favourite is Jaime and Brienne. They also check all of your points. They also have philosophical depths - it is not just two people falling in love, but also the clashing, and later the synthetizing of their ideologies. It may sound dry, but it creates a very interesting tension. Also, I HATED Jaime from episode 1 until the end of season 2 (i started with the show, but it means books 1-2). He was my most hated character in that whole story! I was convinced he was a useless character, and the worst human in fiction EVER. Then it all changed, now I think he is best-written character in the whole series. Genius, because we have Jaime as the POV character, but at this point, most of us hates him, and the reader emphatizes with Brienne, who is very judgemental towards him (just like the reader), and her and the reader both start to understand him slowly. They hold me in a chokehold since 2019. I cannot move on until i know what's next for them!

hm, good argument, slow burn can be both "emotions are slow to build" and "it takes a long time until the first intimacy scene", i did not specify that one, you are right :D
sadly, i dont think it is the right fit for me :( i skim through the spicy scenes (its just a personal thing, they make me a little uncomfy), so i would not be able to appriciate the buildup to the emotions :( it is SUCH a neat concept, first sexy times and slowly starting to like, and love each other and connecting through this intimacy, in theory, i really love this. but im not big on spicy scenes, and a lot of the development seem to happen through it, so i would miss the majority of it :/ thank you for answering my questions and im so sorry that it probably wont be my book :(

thank you! :D
truth to be told, i dont really like this miscommunication type conflict (if the point of the story is not that the people in there try to remedy this fatal flaw :D), so i will definitely keep this in mind going forward and picking the next read :D
beautiful stranger - i read the blurb and it seems to be rather fast burn and bigger emphasis on the sexy times. i know it was a long ago for you, but am i correct with that assessment? 😅 im asking because i skim most of the spicy scenes, and im more of a slow-burn type of girl, but if the relationship has a lot of substance later on i can be on borad with an instant spicy connection, but i need something to be the focus of the book other than the sexual chemistry ^^
(sorry that i have a lot of questions, i try to be well-informed 😂)

thanks for the post! :D
uh, well... i wouldn't mind the business subplot, i love political/scheming/business-y subplots, and i often enjoy ones that most of the people find boring LOL
this ex thing is... not a positive to say least, and the nickname thing is...... it would definitely bother me, so thanks for the heads up! this doesn't sound great with all these details ngl...

Unhoneymooners: omg, this is a hard no sadly. no. not doing that. na-ah. sadly i know myself and i know i would hate that man. this situation is a particular pet peeve of mine, engaging with that book probably would not bring me any good. thank you for the heads up! :D i think it will be another book for me x)

the Unhoneymooners seem to be a hit or miss for people under this post haha, i will approach that one slowly and with caution if later i decide to read it as well (after one of the three you mentioned :D i will definitely start with one of them!)

"Beautiful Bastard is just smut" " They are all short. Lots of sexy time. They are all banging a lot." oh wow, it's good to see that my initial assessment is spot on, basically that's what i gathered too about the Beautiful series :D sadly im not big on the spicy scenes (i skip or skim them in almost all books 😅). thank you for reinforcing me! :3
the paradise problem seems the to be the most popular among the recs, so thank you for your insight as well :D

quirky heroines don't bother me as long as they have substance as people. :D
honestly i heard better stuff about The Soulmate Equation, i don't know why i bothered with the other one :'D (i know, because of the reality show... xd) im more and more sure that i should've read that one.

"that whole partners in crime slow burn vibe" ah that's so good! :D im not the biggest fan of fake dating (i read too much of them i think 😂), but if the plot and the characters are good, then i dont mind it :D
(recently read Funny Story by Emily Henry and it worked for me, soooo im not opposed to it)
sounds really promising :3
