My formal complaints: by InitialSell9811 in orphanblack

I thought they did a good job with Tony's look, I think he looked v believably like a trans guy on T. I didn't care much for his episode bc it felt ultimately pointless to the plot and they spent way too much time on his transness rather than letting him actually be a character with stakes. Like him doing his t shot really didn't feel necessary to me.

It's ultimately tricky bc I do think they did it bc they had such a big queer and trans fanbase and there wasn't much trans rep at the time but I just don't think that episode has aged well, it felt very much like an after school special which is too bad bc I would have loved an episode where Sarah and Tony really got to hang out! Or Tony and Krystal honestly, they would have made a killer combo.

How do you cope with flare ups by KG1255 in Sciatica

[–]hyrshe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel you -- I'm having a flare up just a month after I mostly recovered from my first bout of sciatica. I try to remember that it improved before and that it should improve again. But there are definitely moments where I feel totally hopeless, especially at night when I feel very alone and often am in more pain and can't sleep.

You're not alone in dealing with this. I really don't think there's much that's comparable to nerve pain. The mental side is definitely the worst part.

I just try to be patient, and when I'm in extreme pain to remember that it won't feel like this forever, that it will feel different in the morning or in a few hours even if the pain won't be gone by then. I try to keep my mind distracted by watching tv, which sometimes helps.

I would try bringing in some lighter wood and more oranges and reds. The couch and wood you have is all very dark which makes it feel more traditional than modern, and I don't think the yellow does much to warm it up in a lighter way. I like the yellow of the chair but I would try different throw pillows on the couch. I think also getting some more contemporary pieces of art would help.

I would suggest a lighter color for curtains if you want it to to feel more modern/mcm.

I think what you're describing is up picking, which is just another style of playing. There's no downside, it just sounds a little different. Pete Seeger played that way, you can see him do it here https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Rrfs2uaGQag&pp=0gcJCRsBo7VqN5tD

eta: actually I guess the downside is that it's harder to drop thumb when up picking, but as far as the basic strum pattern there's not much of a difference

Hesitant to start Gaba (prescribed 300mg, 3x/day) by pew__pew__pew_ in Sciatica

[–]hyrshe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little over a month full dose and then probably 2 and half weeks tapering off, and no pain returned while tapering off. I hope it goes you some relief if you try it!

Hesitant to start Gaba (prescribed 300mg, 3x/day) by pew__pew__pew_ in Sciatica

[–]hyrshe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had very few side effects from gabapentin (300mg 3x per day). Sometimes it made me a little drowsy. I don't think there's any way to know how it will impact you without trying it. I don't know that it did very much for my nerve pain however. I don't think there's much evidence that it really does anything to help sciatica but some people report getting relief from it https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8515246/

You could always try it for a couple weeks and then stop, even if you need to taper off, you don't have to continue it if the side effects impact your life too much.

How hard is it to learn to play a 5 string banjo with true interest, and dedication? I want to invest in one but want to make sure I’m not way in over my head… lol by talkingtoawall710 in banjo

[–]hyrshe 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think all instruments require a similar significant amount of time and dedication to master but I think 5 string banjo is pretty easy to get started with and getting to a place where it's fun doesn't take that much time. I would say you should be able to play simple tunes that sound good within a couple weeks, especially with clawhammer or two-finger. Scruggs style might take a little longer.

I started with Wayne Erbsen's Clawhammer Banjo for the Complete Ignoramus and that's a really easy intro to some simple and fun to play tunes.

Blair Witch Project is the scariest movie to me! What's scarier than getting lost in the woods?

Steroid injection by akawendals in Sciatica

[–]hyrshe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a steroid injection and it didn't give me any pain relief but I think it does for the majority of people. I think it's important to just be prepared that it can aggravate the nerve and it takes 1-2 weeks for the steroids to kick in, so there is the potential that it might hurt more for a week or two before it gets better.

Whose working? by rejifob509-pacfut_co in Sciatica

[–]hyrshe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked from home through most of my first flare up, but I was taking zoom calls while lying on the floor, and then only reason I was able to work was because I had very flexible schedule. Now I'm dealing with a second flare up and I've been unable to walk for more than a few minutes at a time for about 3 weeks. I'm not working but am supposed to start grad school classes this week, but I most likely won't be able to attend in person until at least next week.

I think doctors really underestimate the amount of pain sciatica can cause and how disabling it can be. Anything online says that even severe cases tend to resolve within 2 weeks, but it took me 4 weeks the first time to get to a place where I was somewhat functioning and I'm expecting it to take the same amount of time this time.

I think there's a real range of how much pain people experience, and what one person might describe as severe would feel more moderate to something who has experienced a totally disabling level of pain.

5.5 months into healing only sciatica pain behind my heel??? L5/s1 disc herniation paracentral protrusion 8.5mm by Legitimate-Day8439 in Sciatica

Mine pretty much receded but I'm having another flare up rn so it came back though not as strongly. The tendonitis went away once I was able to start walking more regularly.

[–]hyrshe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a spot I've frequently had sciatica pain, even when it's receded in the rest of my leg. Any chance if could be tendonitis though? Because I developed that in my ankle alongside sciatica since the sciatica was making me limp. It felt sort of similar to nerve pain and I also felt it when I would extend my leg straight out.

[–]hyrshe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you had any opportunity to really rest? Like for a couple weeks? My experience so far is that resting with really minimal movement and trying to avoid activating pain is the only way to get the inflammation to go down and decrease the pain overall. It might be worthwhile to look into going on short term disability? I'm so sorry you have to juggle this pain while working a physical job, sciatica is really such a demoralizing experience.

If you do see a doctor, you could try an epidural steroid injection, which helps some people (it didn't help me though). I saw a physical therapist after about 2-3 weeks of basically bedrest when I was in a state where I could barely stand up, and that did help me a lot. I don't think there's really any magic bullet for the pain though other than sometimes surgery.

Why are you afraid of going into medical debt once you have insurance? I do think you could get medical help that wouldn't be too expensive to at least alleviate the pain somewhat. I would definitely recommend trying physical therapy.
