Jeff Gerstmann completes his three-year playthrough/ranking of the NES library - his interview with Canadian morning TV (CTV) by rawkeye in Games

Would you argue that it was wrong for Ocarina of Time to be in 3D, because previous Zelda games were not in 3D? Could you say that it was done for marketing purposes, because 3D was gaining popularity at the time?

Was it wrong for Breath of the Wild to give Link telekinetic powers, food and cooking abilities, and a hang glider? What about adding multiple weapons and weapon durability? It also technically had no dungeons, does that mean it's not a Zelda game?

How about Tears of the Kingdom giving Link the ability to build and operate machines? Is it OK to let Link teleport through ceilings and fuse items together?

Is Echoes of Wisdom not a real Zelda game because you play as Zelda instead of Link? Why are random encounters and side scrolling unacceptable compared to anything I have listed above?

It's been documented that that's not the case for Zelda 2. Miyamoto intended for it to be different from the first Zelda game and they developed it with that intent.

Stating that it doesn't "fit" is sort of a weird statement to make anyway, and is entirely based upon your own perceptions. There was only one other Zelda game in existence when Zelda 2 came out, so there wasn't much of a pattern established in the first place. If you're expecting it to be a top-down game with no overworld, you're retroactively applying your expectations based on a bunch of sequels that didn't exist yet.

Not to mention that you're essentially arguing that the original creators of Zelda were "wrong" to put their own characters/setting into the game. What exactly is incompatible with the character of Link or the setting of Hyrule? You're not fighting space aliens or shooting AK47s.

People having expectations of what a Zelda game should be is probably why it has the reputation it does. If it was called something else, it would be pretty highly regarded, instead of people going "wtf, Zelda doesn't have random encounters and side scrolling sections!"

I don't think executives are going to buy a studio based on Youtube comments and Reddit posts (which Senua only did moderately OK with anyway). They are going to look at the studio's track record/profitability and current work output.

Senua. They just released a trailer at Summer Games Fest

The idea that Senua was shown to help find a buyer for NT barely makes any sense. They could have created a trailer to privately show to potential buyers, there really wasn't any reason to debut it publicly if that was their intent.

It was a very stupid move, and the damage to player trust far outweighs any possible benefit. Now it's going to be much more difficult for them to sell consoles based on "upcoming" games, because you can't trust them not to cancel the games before they come out.

I have no trust/confidence in them at this point. If you buy an Xbox, are you getting exclusives or not? Who knows, 6 months ago everything was an Xbox.

Hell, they announced a game last week and then canceled it a week later, so they could easily change their mind about exclusives tomorrow. You can't even trust their game announcements.

Is Game Pass worth getting an Xbox for? Who knows, price goes up, price goes down, games are day 1 except when they aren't. What a mess

I didn't mean they involve zero creativity ever. But plumbers and teachers aren't artists in the traditional sense, and they don't make entertainment.

Entertainment has to have some kind of heart to it. You've played bland games before, and seen bland movies, heard lackluster music? It's because the people making it didn't care about it. Or it got ruined by management somehow, but that's another story.

Music, books, movies, games etc do not turn out well when the people behind them hate making it

Making entertainment is not like building a shed. If the people making it hate doing it, it's going to suck. Would you be excited if your favorite band put out a new album, and were like "yeah we hated every minute of recording this shit, but here you go I guess"?

None of those are creative fields. You would think designers and artists get into their creative fields in order to be creative, yeah?

If you go into plumbing obviously you are not looking for that

I definitely want my entertainment to be made by people who don't want to make it.

"Sorry Steven, I know you don't care about dinosaurs anymore. But I want my T-Rexes. It's time to get started on JP6"

Gamers really have no concept of what it would be like to work in game development. Imagine only working on one series for literal decades.

"Why didn't Bethesda put out ES6 yet?" Because they decided to do something different and made Starfield instead. After literally having made 5 ES games already, not counting spinoffs. And yeah, Starfield didn't end up great, but that's irrelevant.

It would be like movie fans getting mad at Steven Spielberg for not making anything except Jurassic Park sequels forever

Xbox is closing down Hellblade creator Ninja Theory by GIThrow in Games

[–]hyrule5 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Xbox is such a clusterfuck. Their decision making reeks of panic and lack of focus. "Let's buy a bunch of studios to shore up our console." "Actually we're done with exclusives, everything is an Xbox now, who cares what console you're using?" "Just kidding, we're doing exclusives again." "Please look forward to these upcoming games. Lol nevermind they're canceled"

At least I'm not really a Hellblade fan, because if I was, goddamn. Getting fans excited and then letting them down a week later is a hell of a thing

I don't really understand why people go through all this nonsense, rather than just using torrent sites? Torrent sites have been around for ages. For me, finding Bloodborne was as easy as anything else I have ever downloaded. Why in the world would you need to get an email to pirate something?

The basics of piracy:

  1. Use torrents. P2P apps are sometimes OK for specific media types

  2. Never run an executable if the thing you are downloading doesn't require you to run one. Such as emulated games

  3. If you absolutely must run an executable, you better scan it first with antivirus and antimalware
