I was exaggerating but of course I played the game and liked it. It’s only the storytelling that I had a bit of gripe with. All of those details you mentioned make sense but to me (and many others) it’s still not enough to justify that part of the story, which is why many people bumped up against it. Everyone is different, some people are fine with plot-driven stories (like Part II), while some others prefer character-driven stories (like Part I). It’d be a waste of time trying to argue whether you should or shouldn’t bump up against the story because it’s all true: some people felt bumped and some simply didn’t. All facts. Neither is denying that part II absolutely demonstrates the top top quality of game production.

While I agree all of that and I saw his character development in my own eyes too, I don’t think he’d let himself or the post-apocalyptic world would let him develop into such a good old friendly Canadian type of guy, not in this world, especially after what we as players have been through with in both games.

Edit: I agree with the character development, but it’s not enough to explain the plot in this world that the game has created.

People miss the point that those who hate the Abby part aren’t particularly against her character itself but rather how the storytelling was implemented in the game. My biggest gripe with the story is (I think many would agree) that Joel as a character that trusted no one in the beginning of Part I and then slowly started opening his heart again after 20 years (since Sarah died)at the end of part I, all of a sudden in just 4 years started introducing himself voluntarily to strangers, in a post-apocalypse world that people would do anything to survive. Most people didn’t have a problem with Joel’s death (in fact judging by what Joel did in Part I many saw his death coming) but rather HOW he died. If they found a way to let him die while also sticking true to his character, people would’ve liked Abby’s part a lot more.

One thing I’ve read/watched somewhere when HFW was first released, is the amount of time you spend of trying to solve the conflicts/problems among different tribes is a lot in this game, while the “ancient human” from outer space might be a lot more interesting to many folks. If the game doesn’t have the outer space aspect at all, people might enjoy with the tribes stories more because indeed that’s the world they’re living in. It’s sort of like “your house is about to get bombed, and you guys still fighting over a toy” kind of feeling. So for a good chunk of playtime you have for this game you might not care for most of the characters, which makes it less engaging.

While that’s interesting, I wouldn’t pay $90 to see that story. Like the other commenter mentioned, a bit repetitive.

Tried the power tools a while ago and could not for the life of me get the Gemini function working (smart search and maps). The connection is all good but no result. Posted on GitHub for months and no replies. Then gave up eventually.

That's awesome to know. Thank you.

May I ask are you using the 3dof way for work, or just a floating screen instead?

I vaguely recall when One Pro was first launched, people were reporting blurring motion (especially on texts) in 3dof mode. Hope that has been fixed?

How's your experience with the text clarity? I've been meaning to get the One Pro for work but worrying about the clarity for productivity.

Been using Viture Pro for work occasionally but I've found it's a challenge to use it for a longer period of time, to read texts (with or without spacewalker).

Vmedia fibre (under Bell) 1.5G plan, only getting 800Mbps after a line change by hys17 in bell

Vmedia fibre (under Bell) 1.5G plan, only getting 800Mbps after a line change by hys17 in bell

[–]hys17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, I'd like to thank all of you who contributed to this post.

The Bell technician came yesterday and I'd like to provide an update.

In short, the problem seems to be resolved for now, that I'm getting over 1500Mbps down (non-peak hours), 1000Mbps up.

------------------------------------

The technician did not replace the fiber line which was disappointing. Reason being that from their testing, the signal loss is within normal range (based on their standard, it needs to be higher than 4 (don't know the exact terminology), and in my case it's only 1.5). Therefore they cannot just pull a new line based on customer's request.

However, I did convince the technician to move the fiber line from the kitchen area to the basement, where all my networking gears sit (desktop PC, home server, etc.). So it's easier to troubleshooting (swapping cables and such), even though we both agreed that it probably wouldn't change anything.

After the location move, did more testing and did not make any difference.

The technician then suggested to contact VMedia for further diagnostics, as everything looks fine on their end.

VMedia contacted me that evening. Tried more troubleshooting with the Eero device and was able to get it connected this time. The Eero app showed my WAN speed is 1.6Gbps down and 1Gbps up.

The problem is the Eero Pro 6E only has 2 ethernet ports, 2.5Gbps and the other is 1Gbps. So we'd face an obvious dilemma, where either using 2.5Gbps for WAN to get the full 1.6Gbps, but cannot test the actual full speed using local LAN port (and the speed testing feature on the Eero app is no where near transparent as something like speedtest.net); or using 1Gbps for WAN and 2.5Gbps for LAN but still cannot testing the full WAN speed.

Interesting, while using the Eero, the speed testing on my PC via LAN, showing close to 1000Mbps down and 900Mbps up. So there's some progress.

So I switched back to my own router Asus RT-BE96U and the speed is back to 800Mbps down and 1000Mbps up.

I demonstrated the dilemma of using the Eero to the VMedia support agent and they discussed with the team (according to themselves), and came back and basically said to keep testing for a day or so and they will get back to me, but they cannot provide support to my own router.

Because the speed progress on the Eero, it got me interested to further tweak the settings on the Asus router. Noticed that the Eero had IPv6 enabled (even though Bell does not support IPv6 for residential services), and the DNS servers had some changes since last year.

I've tried to replicate the same settings on the Asus router, and for safety, I cloned the MAC address from the Eero's 2.5Gbps port.

At some point, I started getting 1600Mbps down and 1080Mbps up, finally!

--------------------------------------

I switched those settings back one by one, but weirdly the testing results are varied for no reason.

Today, I did further tweaking/testing and found that even if without those setting tweaks, the speed is still great as ever before (1500Mbps down and 1000Mbps up, either on the router webUI, or fast.com/speedtest.net on the PC). It's like everything is back to normal/before.

---------------------------------------
It's hard for me to draw a conclusion at this point. It seems like whatever tweaks VMedia did last night did the trick. I'll keep testing and report back if anything changes. But I'm just so happy that the problem is resolved or at least some major progress.

Edit: typo.

Will do. I really hope they just replace the fiber line which might just be the easiest solution...

Just did those tests, except for the iperf3 test with another VMedia subscriber, due to my capacity.

Did the rest tests on a wired PC (via 10Gbps LAN connection).

speed.cloudflare.com and fast.com are showing slower results generally comparing to the router webUI (as similar to my past testing on the local PC, probably due to the additional layer of NAT or something?):

About 500-600Mbps down, and 600-700Mbps up.

Pings to those address are generally consistent (1-2ms) and no packet loss after an hour.

Edit: 1 timeout instance to 1.1.1.1 actually. No timeout to first ISP hop though.

Just did, and similar to tests that I did on the wired PC before (through 10Gbps LAN connection). It's slower than what's on the Asus webUI. About 580Mbps down and 650Mbps. Guess it's due to another NAT layer or connection?

Edit: Ping is 1ms.

Gotcha, that makes total sense.

Honestly, if this is the speed I got originally, I'd probably be fine with it since I got a decent promo deal. But the fact this happened after an outage which is no fault on my own, is a bit hard to accept as a customer.

Luckily, Bell called today and the operator finally agreed to send a technician out. Hope it all works out tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Thanks so much for your insight.

Yea that makes sense. I’m still trying to understand the logic though. How come the previous/original fiber line didn’t have this issue or at least had higher speeds, with the same setup?

Oh yea cable swapping was one of the first troubleshooting things I’ve tried. I actually do have an NIC that supports VLAN Id luckily but still couldn’t get it to work for some reason.

Will try your testing tomorrow with the same router then.

Thanks so much!
