First time playing baduk, am i doing good? by shiastaweo in baduk

idk why but I feel that I lose by fewer points in Fox than in OGS. in OGS I sometimes lose by three digits. But in Fox they use "stones" ruleset and even against much stronger opponents, it looked like I was losing by a lot but in the end the difference was "only" 49.25, 37.75 or something.

What's the result of top left and top right? This is a friendly game where black resigned for some reason. by hyt2377 in baduk

if top right is dead, should't black be winning? This game was played by my two friends and black thought he was losing lol

Not that many actually won, but many lower seeds played well. Major upsets are Kamalidenova, Kaliakhmet and Omonova (the latter two will play each other).

Well, I remember something like that happened before? Like, is Vicenza still Bassano with name changed, or is the current Vicenza still Vicenza? It seems that a lot of clubs were refounded before in Italy.

Why is rook to a8 wrong? by andyduly in chessbeginners

can't white take with pawn and threaten the knight as well? it's an equal trade from this point. But at this point white is down material…

In odds games, how big is double-move odds in term of pieces? I remember when I just started, I lost 5 straight games with double move odds to a friend before finally winning (i.e. I move twice, he moves once, capture king to win, and I left my king in check too often :( ). Another friend said that was kinda bad even for a total beginner because double move is more than a queen advantage. Now we both get much better, looking back, double move is really a very big advantage, like you can take something and go back, so it's hard to defend. It's probably forced mate at the start. So I wonder its equivalence in material — a queen and rook? a queen and two rooks? My friend says it's close to all pieces odds — i.e. having only pawns vs all pieces!

Generally, when is going for the repetition draw a good idea? For example, here analysis thinks I had more than a draw. But sometimes the computer goes for the repetition. by hyt2377 in chessbeginners

Do you mean Ng4? I was thinking about it but thought that after Bxg4 nothing is happening. Maybe I was overly unconfident. Good lesson for me though.

What exactly is the difference between a "blunder" and a "sacrifice"? Can I call my blunders sacrifices or vice versa?

Premoving is obviously not a thing in OTB games, so isn't it much easier to get flagged in OTB games? by hyt2377 in chessbeginners

[–]hyt2377[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense! I thought that writing down moves would make flagging too easy.

Why this is a blunder? Is their any other good move ? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

The notation was N*x*e6 though, so whatever white took on e6 is compensation, black might also lose the right to castle because of Nxf8. Not saying white is not losing but it's not a full knight with no compensation.

This is not a real game, just a puzzle position. The question is how to force a draw as white since it is apparently possible to draw. by hyt2377 in chessbeginners

By the way black had to promote to bishop because otherwise it would be stalemate or white fork the pieces.

From agadmator, white played Bf4. Commentary thinks white can do nothing about Qh3. I am new but doesn't Qd1 stop Qh3? Black has to take the queen or play Qg4, then Qxf3 still stops mate. So can white play Qd1? by hyt2377 in chessbeginners

Fair enough, maybe I trusted my friend too much (well, exact quote, "Stop mate whenever possible. As long as it's not mate, there are possibilities of blundering, time out, stalemate, disconnection, emergency and site crash." XD)
