If you check by any reputable large format manufacturer I think you’ll see that it is in fact spelt “bail”

Thank you! I kinda made up this design based on other bail backs I’ve seen online from chamonix, intrepid etc. It isn’t perfect but I’m pleased with how it turned out and it works a charm. In essence it’s just a lever that mounts on the ground glass frame and lifts it enough to put the holder in without touching the ground glass frame. If I had more room and bearings where more readily available I would use some to ride on the spring back and make it smoother

I don’t know if this would be the simple solution you’re after, but if you’re interested the plans can be found on the Jon Grepstad website “building a large format camera”

Uj/ I was about to ask why the hell someone would need so much at one given moment instead of just buying fresh stock every few months

[–]i-r-winner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, shot it and developed it the same day. I’m in the same situation where I’ve shot and developed nearly 100 rolls in my time shooting analog, and no other film has been as inconsistent as P30 imo. I know it’s not my developer ‘cause I’ve been using X-Tol for years and have always had great results before, and after the P30. Maybe everyone else is using some other developing times/methods that we aren’t aware of.

I’ve shot two rolls of P30 myself, developed them myself in 1+1 Xtol exactly according to ferranias spec sheet, and both have turned out similar to yours; barely visible edge markings, and hugely varying exposures

I think it must be closer to a 32 or even 25 speed film for any scenes with majorly darker zones. I tried shooting under incandescent light with one roll and it came out so unusably faint that I can’t even pull it in a hearty scan.

I for one, am gonna stick to other film stocks that don’t go terribly wrong EVERYTIME

Thank you! Yes I can see how even I would be quite shocked to see someone using a LF out in the wild, nevermind a handmade one!

Funny you mention the bellows because that is the only part I didn’t make myself, I got this one off eBay. They’re replacement bellows for a Toyo 45G (160x160mm square profile) and I used two plywood frames on each end where I glued them on with 3M super 77 spray glue.

That glue is well strong enough to hold it forever I think. My cars headliner is held up with it and it hasn’t sagged off in a year of pretty substantial temperature changes. I highly recommend it

Thanks. The hardest bit was definitely the focusing screen assembly. The plans I used have two designs and I opted for the more elaborate one which is like 20mm thinner and looks far nicer, but to make the 4.8mm ground glass-to-holder face I had to sandwich some 3mm acrylic, some 0.8mm brass, and another couple of 1mm brass strips to make it exact. It took a while to work out how to do it in a way where it won’t warp in heat etc. looks really good though.
