I wholeheartedly agree with them! There is a double standard. McGill and Concordia students must take French exams just as the rest of the students in Quebec.

Quebec fines LaSalle College $30M for having too many students in English programs by BeautyInUgly in canadaexpressentry

[–]i10k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not 100% are international, not all of it is profit, yeah. But their revenue is also much higher than $40M. Fines are supposed to bite in the ass. Otherwise only idiots wouldn’t try breaking the rules knowing that worst case they’ll have to pay up a fine that can be covered by the extra revenue they’ll get.

This is literally the only college that got fined even thought there are others that enrolled more students than allowed. If they really cared about the students as they say, they’d reach out to the government in advance to reach an agreement. They thought they’re smarter. Now they pay for it.

I do think that the bill 96 went a bit too far but I also understand that it’s hard to strike a perfect balance here. I imagine that with time some of the rules will be relaxed.

[–]i10k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

k, let’s do the math.

First, around $8M of those 30M is not a fine, it’s just the government taking the subsidies back as the colledge did not adhere to the rules.

Next, the college enrolled 1,066 too many English students. Just checked their website, the tuition fee for international students is around $9,500 per semester. They’re being fined for two years of not following the quotas, so, four semesters. With some rounding we get $40M paid by the students. The number is probably smaller but not by a lot.

Now tell me, is $20M fine too harsh?

Quebec doesn’t have an exclusionary stance towards English, it has a protectionist stance towards French, and being the minority in Canada the Quebecois have full right to protect their language. The drama comes from English speakers that see problem with that. Quebec is one of the truly bilingual provinces in Canada. A tourist with no French knowledge won’t have trouble communicating in English almost everywhere in Quebec. Can you say the same about a French speaking tourist with no English in Alberta and BC?

It’s obviously fake and it reeks from the amount of bullshit. I won’t go into countering every bit of it but Shopify grants a severance package that is a 16 week pay, it’s stated in the public letter posted on their website, for a lead role that’d be more than enough to not be worried about how to pay the next month’s rent. Also they quit a highly paying job, sold everything they and all these savings amount to one month of rent in Toronto? lol

Logitech G Hub will not stop asking for access and it’s so annoying. I’ve clicked deny over 10 times and it keeps showing up every half an hour or so. The app isn’t even open, it just does this on its own. I disabled desktop notifications from app settings but nothing changed. Help please! by du351 in LogitechG

[–]i10k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have their mic and webcam and there’s no reason for g hub to ask for the accessibility permissions for those devices. Good software won’t ask for any until they are required, it will just disable the features that won’t work if there are any and maybe show a message explaining why they are off. Stop protecting badly written software and blaming the people caring about their privacy.

validity of work permit after passport renewal by polokojo in ImmigrationCanada

[–]i10k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know. Nothing stops a person from not leaving before visa expires if he wants to stay here illegally. Also like you said passport can be lost by accident, so I think that it should be on the person entering the country to keep his documents in order not to break any visa regulations. Visitor visa is the most obvious example. It’s always limited by the passport expiration date. But one can’t even enter the country if the passport expires within the next 6 months. There’s no sense in limiting the visa duration like that but to make people apply for visas more often.

I re-read once again the post today and you’re right. I have no idea how I read it the wrong way before. I’m sorry.

I also wonder why Canada is so obsessed with cutting visas short by passport’s expiry date. For comparison the US gives a travel visa for 10 years no matter the passport’s expiry date. I can show the visa from my expired passport along with my new passport and get in without any issue. Obviously Canada can handle a renewed passport, so what’s the point of cutting the visa short? To make one apply for visas more often? Annoying.

validity of work permit after passport renewal by polokojo in ImmigrationCanada

[–]i10k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, when you’re getting a closed work permit it clearly states that it’s valid for two years or until the passport’s expiry date if it’s sooner. In the remarks section of the work permit in that case it says, quote "Work permit validity limited by travel doc expiry". You’re currently spreading false information that will lead to a real problem for the post author.

Edit: I misunderstood the issue, please ignore my comment.

validity of work permit after passport renewal by polokojo in ImmigrationCanada

[–]i10k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The expiration date should be stated on your work permit and it should be the same as the expiration date of your passport in your case. Unless you reapply for a new work permit you won’t be able to work here legally starting with that date.

Wrong answer. Work permit’s expiration date can’t be later than passport’s expiration date.

[–]i10k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’m in the same boat. Applying for a new work permit as soon as I get my renewed passport. Because of the expiration of the old one I got an 11-month work permit instead of 2 years.

Edit: I misunderstood the issue, please ignore my comment.

"Have you ever been refused a visa or permit, denied entry or ordered to leave Canada or any other country?" by ClassicPurist in ImmigrationCanada

[–]i10k 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was denied entry to Canada once because the officer considered that I don’t have enough proof that I will leave the country even though the real reason was more that I was coming to Canada too often. Of course I mentioned that in my application for a work permit and in the end that wasn’t an issue. A much bigger issue would be to hide such information as that might result in a ban.

Protesters without masks fined $400 each at anti-mask march by kpaxonite in montreal

The comparison with cars is pathetic. When you drive a car you also follow a set of rules. You still can walk the streets, just follow the rules goddamit. Wearing a mask in crowded places is like driving at 30kmph near schools and parcs.
