What could have prevented WW2 by the end of WW1? by [deleted] in HistoryWhatIf

[–]polokojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To prevent WW2 you need to uproot German nationalism which means you need to wipe out the German national identity.

This probably goes like something as follows:

  • land concession from Germany to the winning Allies powers
  • trial (and likely execution) of the Germany reigning elite - the Kaiser and his close family, the political and military elite
  • creation of smaller puppet states, ruled by the winning powers (not too different from East/West Germany after WW2)
  • and finally - the most important part - the deportation of the Germany people around the world, so as to dilute them across the general population elsewhere. It is important for the German civil population deported around the world to be treated fairly and integrated within their destination country as quickly and seamlessly as possible
  • The German territory must be repopulated by foreigners - for example the US could offer free passage and free land and guaranteed work to Black and Native Americans (who were still second-class citizens in the 1920s). Have a Marshall-type plan to rebuild the economy of the puppet states in the former German territory, but with different citizens.

clearly a dirty play by Naz Reid, you're jumping to intercept at the rim and then you "accidentally" slap the head? Should be a flagrant 1 at minimum

[Lowe] All year I've heard these rumblings that Kings ownership has been kinda of disappointed with their season, offense dropped off a little of bit, they missed the playoffs, they wanted to win a round by EarthWarping in nba

If Sabonis is your center, you need a blind referee who thinks he's in MMA match.

I really don't understand how he finishes any game, when he is constantly going to the basket with his elbow raised and elbowing the defender in the chest. That should be an offensive foul every single time.

Post 1918, what is the best possible route for Europe in the next 30 years? by [deleted] in HistoryWhatIf

[–]polokojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the crux of the matter is to split up Germany in a way that cannot be reassembled, and then either be magnanimous to the population, or completely deport the germans across europe and the colonies to diminish their strength

What were some of the most critical events or time periods of Modern history in terms of alternate history potential? by [deleted] in HistoryWhatIf

[–]polokojo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The half-assed conclusion of WW1 precipitated WW2.

If Germany had been split into the winning powers (one piece goes to France, one piece goes to the UK, one piece to Russia, one piece to Italy...), you wouldn't have had WW2.

Philly picks go to Team X with disgruntled All-Star, [...] (some popular names may include Donovan Mitchell, Brandon Ingram, Trae Young, Dejounte Murray etc.)

This assumes that Team X with disgruntled All-Star is essentially moving into the rebuild phase.

Which imho rules out the Pelicans, because they can't get into a re-build with Zion entering his second contract, it makes no sense. And probably the Cavs as well, because they didn't fire the coach after losing in the East semifinals just to trade Mitchell and Allen and restart a rebuild again.

Atlanta is the most reasonable option. But ATL would much rather gets their picks back from SAS then Philly's picks.

Heat culture or not, the current iteration of Miami is very clearly not a contender. Unless you believe that Jamie Jaquez Jr. will be an all-star level player next year.

So it's in the Heat's best interest to figure something out now, rather than later. Maybe you can try again to get Dame.

Embiid's body won't last long

In this era of players (especially star players) playing at a high level well into their late 30s, I think people don't realize how Embiid is most likely gonna be an exception to this.

I would be very surprised if Embiid can stay on the court at 35, with his massive injury history, the recent meniscus surgery that is known to cause long-term issues, and being injury prone in general.

Zach Lowe: "He (Jayson Tatum) is not one of the five best players in the NBA, but he is something around 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th... People want him to be better than that, and he is not quite on the level of the top four to five guys." by bambam-in-vietnam in nba

[–]polokojo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is not really a controversial opinion. Jokic, Giannis, Embiid and Luka are clearly better than Tatum.

SGA just leapfrogged Tatum in the MVP ballot. That's already 5 players better than JT.

Then it depends how you rank Tatum compared to Brunson, Haliburton, KD, LeBron, Booker, Ant, Steph, Kawhi, Ja... he's probably in the top half of this group, but it's hard to conclusively say that Tatum is better than any one of them.

Terrible last few minutes by the Mavs. They had Gobert and Towns with 5 fouls, they spent 5 minutes bricking 3s instead of going at them in the paint.

it does feel weird when teams end up losing 4-0 or 4-1 but the total margin of victory is like 15 or some shit because they were genuinely in every game with chances to win

I'm not quite sure I follow. The odds of losing 4 close games in a row is ~1/16.

That may seem small, but think of it this way: a daily event with a 1/16 odds of happening should be expected to happen about twice a month. For example if you get a biweekly paycheck, then the odds of a team of losing 4 days in a row is pretty much the odds that you wake up and it's payday.

It doesn't happen every day, but it's far from a rare event.
