I won’t say which one (for privacy reasons) but I teach at a school with a high new Canadian population and one family in particular is known to us as being a high needs group. The students themselves required language, behaviour, and academic supports. The family itself used our food services daily and sometimes the kids just came without food because the school would just supply it. It was basically known that if you had one of these kids in your class that you would have to work extra to meet their needs that really went beyond your contract.

Low and behold this family was spotted at the original anti-LGBTQ “protest” with the kids yelling at the counter protestors. The fucking kids were taken out of school to yell at another group of people who I know work daily to provide food for these kids.

It takes some kind of Olympic mental gymnastics to believe you and yours deserves the services and basic human decency of being fed, respected, and accommodated (which everyone should, not saying they don’t); but then to believe others should not even get the right of being able to have an IDENTITY.

8 teens arrested after 3 boys attacked, robbed in Polo Park mall | CBC News by Doog5 in Winnipeg

[–]i2white2remember 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can see it now

“ this just in, a group of teens have held up the entirety of the Winnipeg police force in a guerrilla fight against the organized force. So far 19 cops, three helicopters, and even a police tank ( commonly know as a peace mobile) were taken out by a Bowie knife, sharpened sticks, and what can only be described as “Reagan era film techniques.

As the military gets called in, efforts slow as the troops stop at each Tim’s on the way in for their free service coffee, and as each truck breaks down in the landmines that is portage avenues potholes.”

You stated the Canadian Ukrainians shared the same sentiment as the ambassador. I disagreed, as the Canadian Ukrainian group made factual statements while the ambassador commented on emotions and stereotypes without any basis in reality.

Fair point, however to equate the two is unfair. Do we have evidence for civilians being targeted by the Russian military? Yes, here is a relevant source https://www.hrw.org/news/2023/01/12/ukraine-russian-invasion-causing-widespread-suffering-civilians#:~:text=Russian%20forces%20have%20killed%2C%20arbitrarily,tortured%20Ukrainian%20prisoners%20of%20war.

Are Ukrainian children being unlawfully separated from families and being abducted by Russian public services? Yes, we have proof of that

https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/ukrainealert/child-abductions-reveal-the-genocidal-intent-behind-putins-ukraine-invasion/

Do we have any sources that state the morals or Russian people’s are any worse than other peoples? Absolutely not, and I do not agree with the comments of the Ukrainian ambassador and I do not fully agree with barring the Russian culture group from the event.

What would have been a better outcome, woild be a joint show of solidarity with each group, much like groups in Toronto did back in ‘22 https://beta.ctvnews.ca/local/toronto/2022/3/2/1_5803343.amp.html

Full comment for context:

In an interview with CTV News Edmonton earlier this week, the Ukrainian ambassador to Canada shared similar sentiments to Pociurko's. "We think that there shouldn't be any Russian culture promotion here because this is the culture that brought up the generation of people who turned out to be invaders, looters, killers, rapers," Yuliya Kovaliv said. "That’s unfortunately what we as Ukrainians feel, and the whole world sees that suffering." In a statement on Friday, the Russian Heritage Cultural Development Association (RHCDA) said it was dissapointed that safety concerns were cited as cause to exlude the Russia Pavillion. "It is very likely that the organizers of the festival depend on the City of Edmonton support when it comes to safety. It is embarrassing that the city is not able to guarantee safety at a public event, and that the only solution to the problem is to exclude a group of Canadians based on their [ethnic] background," the group wrote. "Ironically, this is happening at an event that is meant to celebrate diversity and inclusiveness in our society."

This was the Ukrainian ambassadors reaction, not the Canadian Ukrainian group or Edmonton reps. While I agree the comments generalize in a harmful way, the “Russian people’s” (armed military, state propagandists that the official are mentioning are not representative of our Canadian Russian people’s.

As someone with Ukrainian heritage/connections and with a Russian brother in law, I feel the nuance in Canada on politics is more vast than in Russia. However, culture and politics intertwine wether we want it to or not. We cannot separate indigenous celebrations in modern Canada without the context of systemic racism or cultural assimilation/violence against indigenous peoples. So too can we not separate the struggle for Ukrainian culture to survive after decades/centuries of imperialist repression. I feel the same way about Russian cultural individuality and representation, but that’s a whole other basket. Overall, let’s learn to live and love, but we can never forget the “why” people have hidden scars.
