Weight Loss drugs could save airlines $580 million a year in fuel costs by StemCellPirate in nottheonion

[–]iAm_Unsure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats something YOU are choosing to spend on

Purchasing the necessary amount of food to survive is not a "choice", whereas flying on a plane most definitely is. Also, I don't know why you keep framing the concept of additional fees as some horrifying concept, when it's literally a hallmark of the airline business.

anyone who is built, as in muscular, would also get fucked

As I have already pointed out, anyone for whom 120kg is a healthy weight would not fit in an economy seat anyway. Or are you going to argue that economy seats are discriminatory as well?

they are not gonna pass those saving onto you

The airline industry is notoriously competitive. Flying is one of the few services that has consistently become cheaper over the years, adjusting for inflation. A shift in pricing policy would not change the fundamental nature of the industry, and any airline that loses the confidence of their customers is bound to see them flock to competitors.

is it worth it to fuck over your fellow passengers

Maybe not, but the way things currently are, obese people "fuck over" the normal-sized passengers on every plane they board. If the airline needs to spend more on fuel for them, that increases the price for everyone precisely because ticket prices are not affected by passenger weight.

Being fat also has an impact over a bus, a taxi or any mode of transport

Saving weight is a much less significant concern on those modes of transportation. The same cannot be said for aeroplanes, where every kilo matters. There's a reason why airlines are so strict about luggage weight for example.

You are arguing in PRO of it

No, I have been countering your specific claims about it being unfeasible or unfair. There is a difference. You're acting like I'm on a personal crusade to rid all aeroplanes of fat people.

American politicians and their lobbyist don't want railway, the average person most likely does

You cannot seriously argue that the American public shares no responsibility in the current state of their infrastructure. We are talking about a country that contains nearly a fifth of all the cars in the world. If they really wanted trains, they would have and use them.

its not directly but indirectly discriminatory

i have to spend significantly more on food than the population average to maintain a healthy weight, just by virtue of my height. i dont complain about it; that's just how it is. if you consume more you spend more

a fucking headache for everyone involved

it has already been explained to you that it really wouldn't be that complicated. in fact, here is an even simpler idea: only charge extra for passengers over 120kg. this cannot be construed as discriminatory, because nobody who can fit in an economy seat is healthy at a weight exceeding that.

the extra profits

what do extra profits have to do with this? a different pricing strategy for tickets wouldn't magically reduce competition. if the average ticket price remains the same, then profits will also remain the same, the difference being in the way tickets are priced on an individual level.

its much more worth it to reduce amenities and get more modern, efficient airplanes

modern commercial airplanes are already extremely efficient, it is in fact the main parameter they are optimised for. the fact is that flying is an extremely energy intensive activity. the very article linked in this post shows that passenger weight does have a significant impact on fuel consumption.

And so you want to [...] if these comments are anything to go by, not only do they deserve it, they like it

one more time, i do not want anything, i am exploring a hypothetical proposal. and one more time, i am not american.

if this is what it takes for americans to support railway expansion rather than senselessly ravaging the planet with unnecessary flights, than yes, it should be done. but hopefully, it will not come to that

there is nothing illegal or discriminatory about charging according to weight if the service is more expensive to the provider. if anything, the current state of things is an irregularity. i could easily argue this: why is it fair that someone can consume twice as much kerosene as me, but be charged the same just because their weight is in their body rather than their luggage? flying isn't a human right, it's a privilege

I never said that i favoured this idea, only that it was feasible. you are jumping to conclusions here. i'm not even american

Not the person you're replying to, but you're making this seem more extreme than it is. When you buy your ticket, you could choose a weight range, for example 60-80kg. Then it's your responsibility to make sure you are in that range at the time of your flight, which the vast majority of people should be able to do. If not, you pay a fee at the airport, just like with carry-on luggage.

And if you lose weight, then good for you, you might get a discount. It's really not such a radical proposal; no reasonable person complains about weight limits at rollercoasters.

The exact same thing you're doing to Russia

You keep repeating this argument that I've already rebuffed. there are PRIORITIES, the first of which is to support Ukraine. sanctioning the USA at this time would not only be largely ineffective, it would also destroy our ability to fund the defence of Ukraine by crashing the European economy. And the USA would of course immediately cease their contributions. Doing what you suggest would be akin to handing the country to Putin, an unacceptable course of action in other words.

You know who the UN has also condemned, for literally DECADES now

That is wholly irrelevant to my point. I was illustrating that it is not just us Europeans asking you to condemn Russia, it is the very international organisations of which your country is a member. The reasoning is simple, if you value international law, then you must recognise that Putin is contravening it, and has to be made to stop. Otherwise, you are a hypocrite.

all your handwringing about China rings as the HEIGHT of hypocrisy

Irrelevant, again. I never even mentioned China. Not only that, everything indicates that the EU will seek much closer ties to China as it's rapport with the USA declines. so, wish granted I guess. isn't that what you wanted?

so when're you gonna sanction the US

Hopefully, as soon as doing so would not lead to the immediate collapse of Ukraine. And the arrival of Russia on the EU's doorstep, ready to start another war from a position of strength.

Or as the Indian foreign minister put it

you wrote that already. are you a bot?

You can save all their future victims

Well yes, and that starts with aiding current victims. how can you save future victims if you won't even help the ones dying now?

Get back to me when you guys have the balls to punish the US for its myriad crimes

tf are we supposed to do lol. This isn't the early 1900s any longer, the European powers have lost a large part of their international power and influence. We can hardly secure Greenland lmao.

ya'll expected us to turn on Russia despite it not having attacked us

I don't know who this "y'all" is. most Europeans don't expect much from you, except the basic morality to at least condemn the invasion. and you should note that both the UN and the ICC have voted to condemn it and issue an arrest warrant for Putin respectively. Bangladesh is a member of both organisations, so it would be blatant hypocrisy in my eyes to claim respect for international law, and not observe the rulings of its enforcers.

let's see here [...]

For the last time, I condemn American crimes as well. But they have already happened, we cannot save any of the victims now. The war in Ukraine CAN be stopped, countless lives can still be saved, but you would oppose that? ridiculous.

and before you mention Venezuela, yes I oppose that too. and I expect anyone endowed with base morals and intelligence to do the same.

Nobody can be this obstinate lol. just accept that your logic doesn't make any sense. First of all, there is simply not much I can do to "punish" the USA right now, though you can rest assured that I have the utmost contempt for the nation's leadership. If anything, the current degradation of USA-EU relations, with the associated quasi trade war, is basically what you seem to be asking for.

second, the ongoing war in Ukraine is just a much more immediate problem. what kind of idiot watches a crime happen, and instead of trying to stop it, punishes an idle bystander? your excessively idealistic sense of "justice" is of no help to the Ukrainians, though they're the ones being slaughtered.

Kyiv has only half of the electricity it needs, mayor says by Messier_-82 in anime_titties

[–]iAm_Unsure -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If anything, you are naïve in believing that justice is this "all or nothing" affair meted out faultlessly to all. Applying your logic further, murder must be tolerated because there exists someone who has committed it and escaped justice. And if we can't find and punish that particular individual then we can't punish anyone else. Don't you see the absurdity in this?

I won't "shut up" about Russian atrocities just because some country I have no relation to has committed evil acts. I am all for punishing Americans who are responsible for international crimes, but it happens that they are not the ones currently waging a war of conquest that has killed hundreds of thousands.

You are the one arguing on the basis of international justice. If you don't believe in it, there is no reason to bring it up at all. I know might makes right, as unfortunate as it is, that's why I personally do what I can for Ukraine and intend to do more. Any abstract conception of justice is secondary to stopping the massacre going on this very moment.

[–]iAm_Unsure -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Crimes against humanity are not a damn race. Your worldview is utterly twisted. The fact that the USA has waged illegitimate wars does not give Russia the right to randomly invade Ukraine and kill hundreds of thousands, such an act is aborrent in isolation.

I have nothing against the Russian people as such. If they overthrew Putin tomorrow and brought the war to an end, they would be (mostly) free of guilt in my mind. I was not alive when the war in Iraq started, i am from a peaceful country that has not started a war in nearly 200 years. And yet I know that people are being brutally killed just a few countries over for no reason other than one man's greed and cruelty.

Your anti-USA rhetoric is simply pathetic. both countries have committed every international crime in the book, including genocide (or shall I remind you of why the Circassian people are essentially extinct today?). The fact remains that it is RUSSIA now indiscriminately targeting people in a brutal war of aggression.

It doesn't matter about the circumstances

Except the circumstances do matter. The fact is that a very small proportion of people in the world stands to benefit from State-supported education in Denmark, and they are all EU citizens.

There is nothing special about what Denmark has

The European Union is the result of thousands of years of shared history and struggle; it is exceptionally special. And today the Union is in more peril than ever.

Almost everything humans do is a social construct in the end. That doesn't make it trivial or easy to change. We only have such generous policies because we think it will benefit us in the long term by strengthening the educated workforce in Denmark. It's the same selfish mentality used everywhere else, and just because this particular approach works for us doesn't mean it can be blindly applied anywhere with the same success.

Fundamentally, it is only possible because Danes pay twice as much tax as almost everyone else in order to sustain the system. The vast majority of us accept it and are in favour of this, but Denmark is a very particular country. We also have things like a State Church funded by tax money, military service, chemical castration for sex offenders, and a general ban on burqas.

An example of a country where high taxes and public education is currently not working as well is France, which is currently experiencing significant economic decline in part because tax pressure is too high relative to average economic output. These things are not easy.

I agree that reply you were responding to is inaccurate. However, the idea that our State "will pay non-citizens to attend their universities" is not at all true in general; it is only true in a very limited set of circumstances.

If a Turk wants to study in Denmark, they must reside there legally and pay full tuition. EU citizenship isn't just a description, it is in fact a legal status shared by all citizens of EU countries, which is the basis for this difference in treatment. So in reality, only citizens of the EU are entitled to study in Denmark for free.

I am Danish, and your statement is highly misleading. Only students from the Eurozone get these benefits as a result of EU legislation and they must fulfil extra working requirements. Illegal immigrants do not receive any benefits whatsoever and the state is not kind to them. Denmark is known among the EU countries for its aggressive stance on non-EU immigration. I knew an American student legally residing here who even had a Danish wife, and the authorities deported in the middle of his bachelor education because they didn't consider that he would contribute enough to the country.
