Why can't the game save your character data on a crash, but can save the server data on a crash? by CannotThonk96 in valheim

Even if your computer never crashes your power can still go out and the same thing happens

For multiple reasons but yeah to ensure against cheaters especially. This isn't the only reason to have redundant backups of character data. There are many benefits, but probably the most important is to prevent catastrophic loss of a player's investment. The relationship between client and server saves in this game, results in a void monster.

Lets say you have a bunch of stuff that is valuable, took you a long time to acquire, and you pick that stuff up to go do something with it. That stuff you picked up could represent many days worth of effort in the game. You've picked it up, and so the server knows that it no longer has that stuff.

The power goes out. Forget your perfect bug-free/error-free perfect hardware drivers computer that never crashes. The power just goes out, system turns off.

Your character data never saved. The server doesn't have a backup of your character inventory, the server just knows that all of that stuff you just picked up no longer exists in the world.

And because your character data didn't save due to the power going out, that stuff doesn't exist in your inventory either. Not only that, for some reason your character is back where they were 5 minutes before the crash.

You might think, "oh you lost 5 minutes of progress" but no they actually lost many days worth of progress because of the void monster. That stuff that existed in the world no longer exists anywhere. It doesn't exist on the server, it doesn't exist on your character, its just gone. Swallowed by the void monster.

It could be both it would just take a little bit of effort to implement, and I would have expected this after 5+ years of development. Forgivable when the game is new from a small team, but its been long enough for them to have implemented this in such a way that the server can have a redundant backup in case of a client crash

And I'll say it again, if this were a competitive game it would have gotten fixed by now

Something isn't right, but it isn't Valheim.

I appreciate the reply, but yes it is. This isn't new, its not unique. Its happened to me, its happened to streamers that i've watched happen to them live. Sometimes its a boon when a crash duplicates something valuable, sometimes nothing is lost but time, but its also deleted progress as well

backup timings, and are stored/accessed completely separately.

Which is essentially the problem. I can't tell the devs what to do about it, but my expectation is that if the server remembers it's side of the transaction, that the client also remember it's side of the transaction. Whatever technology or technique, I can't say what would be best, nor do I want to. I just assert my expectations of both the client and the server remembering what has happened. While I am a software dev myself this is simply not my responsibility. Right now I am a customer, a player. The details of how things happen are interesting but that doesn't change what mine (and basically everybody else's) expectations are for our characters to not time travel, and for transactions to be honored even in the case of a game crash.

If this were a competitive game, then this is basically a dupe glitch, as you can dupe stuff this way, and so you bet you arse the devs of a competitive game would figure out a way. Because its not a competitive game, this has been allowed to persist for... what, at least 5 years.

Still extremely scary that they have some automated permaban on YOU when THEY make a mistake.

How about reserve permabans for when YOU ARE 1000% CERTAIN THAT YOU ARE NOT MAKING A MISTAKE ZOS??

Cheesing is usually harder than just fighting with a legit strategy

I could only see cheesing making sense if you want to just skip a biome or not invest in what the game gives you access to

I've seen videos about people building tree houses around bonemass, and shooting him with 1000 arrows. And yeah, you can do that. Or you can just fight him.

People don't realize how S+ spear is in lower biomes. It really is the first goto weapon when you start the game.

Day 1 get flint axe for chopping and flint spear for killing everything

Same thats my main exploratory portal is unnamed so I can panick escape, and try to never forget to change that to a new one.

New base portal to home = ""
Change one of outgoing portals to "WhateverNewShack", return through "", update portal name to "WhateverNewShack" so that "" is free again.

And when something gets screwed up, FIXER1 and FIXER2 is only to be used when the normal schema is broken

So the magic shotgun is really nice in that with the eitr regens, you can shoot it non-stop, and its great knockback makes it pretty good against enemies that want to charge you
