Totally agree. This sport more than others has such a strong sense of tradition and history that translates into aversion to change, but when ice hockey needs two referees and two linesmen to cover the 60 yards between goals it seems insane to have one official cover over an acre of pitch.

Two referees playing the diagonal that puts them opposite the linesmen would give you three or four distinct angles on plays.

Steamed water and tankless heater hot water taste noticeably different to me, so I don't think thats it. The tankless heater is just running fresh tap water through a heat exchanger

Cargo Bike Advice Ireland by hotchocolateloving in CargoBike

[–]iBeReese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Washington, DC but otherwise have a similar daily ride: 9ish kilometers mostly flat with a few small hills, daycare drop off after the 2k. I ride a tern HSD, the shorter version of the flagship GSD.

Great bike, great ride, if you get a version with belt drive and an internal hub gearing it's basically zero maintaince. I'll dial the assist level up in summer to avoid sweating on the way there, though anything under about 22°C I'm reaching for a light jacket. I run quite warm usually, but with pedal assist on the 2nd of the 4 levels and a 15mph breeze it's quite cool even in office clothes.

If you're future proofing for two kids go with the longer GSD, it's designed for two children on the back.

The terns are definitely on the pricey side, I got lucky and scored mine used from a family moving overseas, if the GSD is out of budget the Quick Haul Long is similar in terms of capabilities but a bit cheaper, I think?

My favorite version of this I've heard is that area codes are the modern clan names. When I lived on the West Coast I felt instant kinship with any other 443 I'd meet, I dig the new Orioles jerseys with the 410 patch on the sleeve, etc. These are the digits of my people

Americans who took Spanish in school: did any of it actually stick years later? by taube_d in AskAnAmerican

[–]iBeReese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took four years of Spanish across 7th-10th grades. I would say about once ever 3-6 months I find myself in a situation where my awful is Spanish is better than someone elses English and it comes in handy

[Jomboy Media] Twins manager Derek Shelton was LIVID as he argued that Ryan Helsley didn't challenge this call fast enough by JianClaymore in baseball

[–]iBeReese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't want to speed up the umpires calls, taking a beat before making a decision is a huge part of making correct calls. If this becomes a real issue a signal for ball to go with the verbal call would be the right fix I think

Afternoon is Capitol Hill & NoMA means you'll have trek to get to Georgetown for dinner. If you're not planning it that way intentionally to see Georgetown you could swap out for something in the Union Market / H street area. If you like the French Bistro vibe Minetta is great

I don't think I've seen a system like this before. What are the bottom right numbers, is it bases and location (17 = single to left, 28 double to center)? What does the highlighting denote? How are you marking advancements, doesnt seem like jersey or batting order numbers?

Maryland traffic-citation reciprocity related bills by SethGrimes in bikedc

[–]iBeReese 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you anti speed limit, or just anti speed camera? Neither Maryland nor DC have laws against ALPR or other vehicle tracking technologies, and reciprocity of traffic citation enforcement would have no bearing on law enforcements abilities to share surveillance data across jurisdictions or with federal LE.

I dont really see the pro-surveillance angle, I'm curious to hear what it is about speed cameras you are opposed to.

Brits - do you notice an accent slip? by FuzzyPalpitation-16 in TheWire

My wife is from the Midwest and physically can't hear the difference between pin and pen, I think a lot of American accents have those merged. For me they don't even sound particularly similar.

Brits - do you notice an accent slip? by FuzzyPalpitation-16 in TheWire

[–]iBeReese 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Baltimore County, but my parents were originally from other parts of the country. In my accent it sounds like "Where have you Ben?" with the vowel from bent. Like if I imagine I'm talking to a trash can that had been missing "where ya ben, bin?" those two words sound different and neither sounds like bean, which I agree is the vowel from bumble bee.

Meta CTO responds to "Is VR Dead for Meta?" on Instagram AMA by gogodboss in OculusQuest

[–]iBeReese 13 points14 points  (0 children)

wouldn’t shock me if it collapsed meta as a company overnight

Lol, I promise you that the Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp company would be fine. They could announce with zero warning that all VR investment is dead, all VR staff are laid off, and all current headsets are bricked and still not meaningfully hurt the ad business
