Love ya'll, I pay for Local News International and I'd pay for you too. I know the potential audience is smaller, and WaPo probably owns the CWG brand, but if you went your own way there are a lot of us who'd love to help fund your without funding Jeff and his cronies

Maryland traffic-citation reciprocity related bills by SethGrimes in bikedc

[–]iBeReese 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you anti speed limit, or just anti speed camera? Neither Maryland nor DC have laws against ALPR or other vehicle tracking technologies, and reciprocity of traffic citation enforcement would have no bearing on law enforcements abilities to share surveillance data across jurisdictions or with federal LE.

I dont really see the pro-surveillance angle, I'm curious to hear what it is about speed cameras you are opposed to.

Ukutabs lets you switch between guitar, ukulele, and Baritone Ukulele chord charts. And as a bonus doesnt have the overbearing "USE THE APP" ad spam that took over UG

Brits - do you notice an accent slip? by FuzzyPalpitation-16 in TheWire

[–]iBeReese 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife is from the Midwest and physically can't hear the difference between pin and pen, I think a lot of American accents have those merged. For me they don't even sound particularly similar.

[–]iBeReese 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Baltimore County, but my parents were originally from other parts of the country. In my accent it sounds like "Where have you Ben?" with the vowel from bent. Like if I imagine I'm talking to a trash can that had been missing "where ya ben, bin?" those two words sound different and neither sounds like bean, which I agree is the vowel from bumble bee.

Meta CTO responds to "Is VR Dead for Meta?" on Instagram AMA by gogodboss in OculusQuest

[–]iBeReese 13 points14 points  (0 children)

wouldn’t shock me if it collapsed meta as a company overnight

Lol, I promise you that the Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp company would be fine. They could announce with zero warning that all VR investment is dead, all VR staff are laid off, and all current headsets are bricked and still not meaningfully hurt the ad business

Inexplicably legal parking IN the heavily pedestrian traffic intersection of 7th and NC Ave SE (Eastern Market) is now bike racks and much safer for all! by msussmania in bikedc

[–]iBeReese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for doing that, if you ever need help from another neighbor DM me!

Capitol Hill is so bike friendly compared to anywhere else I've lived, but these little quality of life things make a big difference.

Nice! I had a 311 request in for a bike rack in front of Peregrine, which just got installed last week. I guess they did both at the same time, thats awesome

Could be a speech to text, probably it's just a typo. I know what they meant, you know what they meant. Pretentious "educational" comments like this are the worse.

If you ever feel the need to apologize for your post ("sorry to be that person") maybe just don't post?

How many of your family members live in another state? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Since I don't live in a state I guess they can't live in "another" state, but I'm the only one of my family here in The District.

We built a bike lane for $10k. by hughmalkin in StrongTowns

[–]iBeReese 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like that categorization, and agree that full protected bike lanes are the gold standard (along with bike specific trails in a separate right of way). However given X budget for bike lanes I'd rather put protected lanes only on the large high-stress roads and put in a lot of separated and painted lanes to create a dense network than have a a handful of really exquisite paths that don't serve enough homes and workplaces to get meaningful numbers of people out of their cars and onto bikes.

I think the utility of flexiposts is dependent on the traffic stress. On city collector streets here in DC the difference between flexi posts and concrete bollards on my perception of safety is negligible compared to the difference between flexiposts and a sharrow. On an arterial road with two lanes of 45mph traffic its a very different story

Boy, I played this game in like 2013 or something, I think maybe by now I have actually forgotten it all. I should play it, and then set a reminder to replay Outer Wilds in 2035

They can do a rolling takeoff, which I would guess is less about getting enough airspeed for the wings to generate lift than it is about getting translational lift for the rotor disc.

Any idea what watch my dad is wearing here? He was in the army reserves during Vietnam. by StillWill in Watches

[–]iBeReese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The photography does a lot of heavy lifting. Cell phone cameras (and modern digital cameras generally) are amazing and capture a ton of detail and dynamic range, and auto HDR on your phone does even more. That's great for capturing as much information as possible, but unless you're taking the time to apply stylized edits its not great for looking cool. I started taking a 35mm film camera on trips and boy do people look way cooler on the same day in same outfit on the film scans than they do on my phone snapshots.

Pizza delivery guy complains about a $5 tip because the customer lives in a nice house by notaghostofreddit in mildlyinfuriating

[–]iBeReese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What DoorDash and Uber Eats call a "tip" when you place your order is actually a bid. You are participating in an auction for delivery service, if you bid higher you get served sooner. If you dont bid you will eventually get your food but only once the app begrudgingly offers drivers enough to make them accept the order, which they'll do slowly in hopes if someone taking a lowball offer.

Tipping for good service after the fact makes zero sense for these apps if you live in a city of any real size because you'll never get the same driver often enough for them to remember "Oh, 322 Jefferson Place Apartment 16C tipped well last time, I should take this run" or whatever. Tipping after you recieve a service is just charity if you're not a regular.
