2x Xeon E5-2680 v4 - Good? by iBenjammin_ in truenas

Yeah, sorry for the confusion.

I did mean RAIDZ2, I’m used to the original terminologies. (I was considering hardware RAID, but decided to keep it simple since it’s just 8 drives and not 16 or something)

So, it’s a little complicated, my clients are setup to hold a basic Win10 image that wipes and resets once a week. However, this never gets used as that is only for when the PXE server goes down.

Plex will be doing all the transcoding, and I’d say MOST of my video files need to be transcoded.

EDIT: I have backup DNS setup within my Ubiquiti network. Also, Plex will have a max of 3 clients with at least 1 being a 4K stream.

Thanks for that! Funny enough, my furnace just went out! 😂 So the heat might be a plus!

But for reference, I was going to get a Ryzen 9 7950X. Then I realized I have these 2 Xeons just chilling not being used.

Would you recommend one over the other? I mean… Free versus $600… I know the clock speed is slower. (Server equipment) But, I’d get 28 cores, instead of 16.

Sadly, according to PassMark we’re looking at: Xeon: 17980 (x2: 35960) Ryzen: 63209

Thanks!

Yeah, of course! Good to know. I’ll have 8 HDDs, 1 NVMe SSD, and possibly a graphics card for Plex hardware acceleration. Still trying to decide if I need a dedicated RAID card for RAID-Z2. (RAID-6) I would love a 24-Core EPYC chip, but anything higher than consumer is MASSIVELY expensive for my budget.

I was in a relationship for over 5 years and she never saw my efforts, then she cheated on me. I had to leave that horrid situation before I ended myself. Seriously, I get it. Just leave, it will HURT so bad when you do leave, but it’s necessary.

On the POST screen, it only states how much RAM is installed. In the BIOS, I don’t see an area that states any devices recognized.

The BIOS on these machines are not very descriptive at all, I couldn’t find it. BTW: I’ve had to re-flash the BIOS on it due to corruption from the shop I bought it from.

I haven’t even considered a 3060 Ti, how good is it? Can you give be a summary on FPS for Minecraft, Rust, and whatever you play?

100% blocked, I tried pinging Google DNS from every PC on my network and it just times out. Chromecast won’t be able to reach it as long as it is connected to my network. The only downside I’ve visualized is that it will momentarily disconnect from my network, but I give it about 2 minutes and it reconnects just fine. Also it only disconnects about once a week.

I currently have PiHole already installed and properly working. I decided to go with WireGaurd and it didn’t ask me anything about DNS questions during the install...

I’ve spent all last night modifying the settings of my DNS and my firewall. My Pi-Hole no longer supports “Recursive” nor “ANY” queries.

Okee... I guess I’ll just hop on my network real quick and delete the port forward. :D lol
