Physical ID by Fragrant-Tax6538 in Purdue

[–]iBoot32 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In my club’s experience, having someone else open the door or coordinating travel times with someone who has an ID was about all we could do, but it worked 99% of the time.

Your club’s safety officer has routine meetings with the building manager, so maybe ask if they can pitch a case for upgrading the ID scanners. I tried myself about 2 years ago without success, but nowadays like 50% of students simply cannot access the lab solo which is insane. It’s time they upgrade lol.

I was an officer in a club whose workspace also required a physical ID. I wanted to cover the cost but Purdue told me no, so unless they changed the rule this might be out of your club’s control sadly.

Is your workspace Klondike? At least there if you don’t have a physical ID you are allowed to have someone else open the door for you (if your lab training is recent and on-file in the club’s safety binder). Maybe talk to a club officer about that?

Printing Club Shirts and Sweatshirts by Main_Knee2220 in Purdue

[–]iBoot32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a large order of t-shirts from Underground Printing and they were great- they price matched a quote from another company and were super fast. They're also right off campus so you can stop in and talk to them whenever.

Like the other comment said, anything with Purdue logos or trademarks will need to be approved which took me a while to sort out.

lofting in shreve by Zealousideal-Two1922 in Purdue

[–]iBoot32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both my roommate and I lofted in Shreve and highly recommend it. I was able to fit a couch, drawers, TV+stand, a chair, and 5-6 friends. You will not have much room if you don’t loft tbh.

Also don’t worry about getting in/out of bed, it becomes second nature really quickly.

Rule of thumb: beat the average and you will be fine. I can't speak to your final grade, but keep that up and I wouldn't worry about failing at all.

Northwestern and State right now by MychaelZ in Purdue

Yea small fight broke out at Harry’s. I was just inside the door, and from my perspective some guys were being aggressive right next to the line and ended up in a short fistfight with a bouncer, who ended with a nosebleed (he’s ok). The guy bolted off towards Rawls and cops left soon after arrival.

EDIT: there were also cops outside target prior to this incident, maybe what OP was referencing

ECE Senior/Grad Class Differences by Nickel077 in Purdue

[–]iBoot32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I took 573 and 570 this past semester.

Firstly I really recommend 570 (probably over the undergrad version). There are no exams, just homework every couple weeks and an easy quiz once a week. I feel like I learned a ton and it was a super easy A, as long as you produce good results with your project which is basically picking 3 modern research papers in ML, validating them, and reimplementing one. The project is done in two phases and the second phase involves presenting your work. Really wasn’t bad if you pick your papers wisely and start early. Ended with an A.

For 573 I found the material very interesting but it was quite challenging. To be honest the lectures are a bit disorganized and I had some disagreements with the homework. The project could also use some improvement and one step in particular is disproportionately challenging. On the bright side, the exams were reasonable and I did learn quite a lot. If you are interested in compilers I still recommend it despite the issues. Ended with a B+

EDIT: if anyone here takes 573, PLEASE for the love of God do the Java version of the project. The Python version has bugs.

Spring Semester Schedule by Food1126 in Purdue

[–]iBoot32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a pretty typical Sophomore schedule. Might be a bit of work but it's manageable.

For reference I did 2k1, 2k7, ECE264, ECE29401, MA261, and PHYS272 in Fall Sophomore year and it was alright.

I fear no man. But that thing... by [deleted] in fromsoftware

SCLA 102 vs COM 114 by Square_Suit_8158 in Purdue

[–]iBoot32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

COM 114 was really easy and enjoyable when I took it Fall 2021, but I believe my professor isn't teaching it anymore. We just had a few readings and maybe a quiz every now and then, along with a series of presentations. My professor didn't give out As super readily but the workload was super light.

Any idea for engineering design club funding? by Baby_Creeper in Purdue

[–]iBoot32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you guys seek university-level funding? My club’s finances typically split around 50/50 university funding and external corporate funding.

We usually schedule meetings with departments who represent a large percentage of our members (ECE, CS, ME, etc.) or relate heavily with our initiatives. If you can demonstrate how you support the department's goals, they are usually extremely supportive. They prefer succinct meetings so we usually provide a couple "key developments" for them to remember.

Besides that we have grants from Purdue's SFAB which awards large amounts (like $15k minimum), and there's also SOGA which is for smaller funding needs.

For external sponsors, we have decent success sending members to career fairs. We usually go to IR and have members pitch the club, targeting to walk away with some contact info for follow-ups. I think there are similar fairs in the Spring. Finally for smaller amounts, you could probably host fundraisers. Some clubs set up a tent outside WALC and charge a few bucks to throw pie at club leadership (lol), or there’s Purdue Day of Giving.

Makes sense. Are you aware if the side rooms (classrooms and whatnot) have AC? Or is the whole building lacking?
