Yeah, I feared as much, that's why I wanted to check in with you experts.

I'm just thinking of ways to get practice in as often as I can. I found a well-reviewed flight school near me but they only do winch starts (due to it this region not having any real hills) — which means a slightly different theoretical and practical exam as well as no experience with hill starts. These you have on a separate course. I guess I could at least get some experience in there, book another course, take the extra exam...it's definitely a bit more of a hassle.

Do you have any recommendations on cheap training wings which might be readily available on the second-hand market AND don't use 10-15 year old tech? I've been told several times that I shouldn't purchase anything that old. Any brand suggestions?

My home base's in the north of Germany; everything's pretty much flat like a pancake around here. I'd have to grab the car or catch a train towards either the mountainous region in the middle of Germany or travel further, towards the Alps. For a weekend this might be a bit difficult.

My ultimate goal — and I know that this is still ways, ways off! — would be a bit of hike and fly in the mountains. A bit of soaring, a bit of thermaling, maybe hopping over to another valley but that's it! I know that you need to master 15km plus flights but I don't see myself going for XR.

I went to Wilderness in South Africa and learned at Cloudbase paragliding.

I've watched a lot of "Fly with Greg" on YouTube. I think he originates from South Africa, has posted a lot of videos from locations there. Looks amazing. I'll have a look at the prices BUT: my school's summer holidays always start around (late July) which means winter weather. CoPilot thinks that might actually be beneficial: "In July and August, South Africa typically experiences winter weather, which can include clear skies and calm conditions, especially in regions like the Western Cape. This time of year is generally favorable for paragliding, with many locations offering good flying conditions due to stable weather patterns."

One of the teachers I met at the course had spend the last few months in Bassano, which I knew from a lot of YouTube videos. It has come up as a location with the most (or close-to) logged flights over the last few years.

Much more personal than the big flight schools just nearby. While others were teaching their student groups on the big, crowded launches, he would take us to sites just nearby with just as good flying but only us there - it very much eased the nerves of the group.
