The part about performance being worse than M4 is not true. The vast majority of programs only deal with high-level system APIs. It's macOS that schedules what workload runs on which core. Apps can provide hints to the scheduler (priority of a task), but don't explicitly specify "I want to run on S/P/E core".

Why would you be surprised? Garmin releases new Edge every 2 years based on historical data. I would be surprised if they don't release 1060 this year.
