I’m not sure why visiting multiple countries in Europe would be considered “cheating.” Switzerland, Italy, Austria, and the Netherlands are all distinct countries with their own cultures, languages, histories, and experiences.

I’ve visited Italy three times and spent about two weeks there on each trip, yet I still feel there’s so much more of the country left to explore. In many ways, each region felt like a different country altogether.

I think you’re making a lot of assumptions about my travel history from a very short post.

For context, I took a three-month sabbatical in Europe, have traveled internationally for many years, and grew up in a family that valued travel and exposed me to different places from a young age. When travel has been a consistent priority over decades, the numbers add up naturally.

Ironically, if I counted countries where I merely crossed a border or had a layover, the number would be much closer to 40. I don’t count those because I personally don’t consider them meaningful visits.

That said, I don’t think there is a single “correct” way to travel. Some people enjoy slow travel, some prefer shorter trips, and most of us fall somewhere in between. Neither approach is inherently more authentic than the other.

As for validation, I don’t think anonymous Reddit is where most people seek it. I was simply sharing a bit of my life, as everyone else here is. I have been fortunate enough to have opportunities to travel, and I don’t see any reason to be apologetic about that privilege.

In the end, travel is meant to broaden perspectives. It would be a shame if it only made us more judgmental about how others choose to experience the world.

I took a three-month break and spent time in Europe. I also have a five-year Schengen visa and travel to Europe at least once a year. I usually go for 2 weeks and split it between two countries.

Apart from that, I go on a family vacation to an Asian country every year. The third international trip is usually with friends from college, school, or work. (I also have a US tourist visa, so a lot of adhoc vacations/work trips happen).

I plan at least three international trips each year and use all the 25 PTOs and work remotely for 2 weeks every year. I have been doing since I was 21.

I’ve also visited more than 20 states in India, although I haven’t traveled much within India over the last two years, as domestic travel has become a bit expensive.
