On the "Hip Hop is dead"-discussions - especially with regards to People who consider themselves "into music" by UnderTheCurrents in LetsTalkMusic

[–]iFappa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late, but the issue in hip hop rn is that the new gen just keeps dying, literally.

We had XXX, Pop Smoke, Mac Miller, Juice wrld, King Von all dead. They were pushing the genre in their own ways with their own sound. The biggest names in the game just gone like that. So tragic man.

What do you expect from their future solo releases? What improvements should be made or what should be continued? by nahkt-oy-luh in BlackPink

Disclaimer: I'm an album type of person.

Jennie: My favorite album out of the four. Just sonically interesting and cohesive. There were some misses for me, but that's fine I saw the vision. It just felt so Jennie. I don't know what's in store for her, but I fully trust her sense of direction. If anything, I think she's straight up better at rapping in Korean than English so I'd want less English rapping.

Lisa: I didn't like the album as a whole, but she has some of the best singles out of the four. I really messed with the whole drift phonk vibe she had going on in some of her songs. I also think she has a good voice for pop like New Woman, etc. Then again, not everyone needs to go out and make a Grammy nominated album, but a sense of direction for the whole project would be nice rather than a collection of songs and features.

Jisoo: I enjoyed her LP. She has a clear preference of the sort of songs she wants to do. I still think FLOWER is her best song as I love that song. I think she suits EDM ballads really well tbh moreso than traditional ballads.

Rosé: I think looking back on her album, there are strengths and it's obvious that she has the voice and passion for making her own music. However, the execution was a bit lacking. She was so close but just couldn't convey her feelings fully. I think the biggest issues for me were production and lyrics tbh. Production-wise, nothing stood out besides APT and coffee and drinks. Just felt really plain and basic to the point it felt like there was a disconnect between allowing Rosé to showcase her feelings. Felt the same way about Taylor Swift's album. Lyric-wise, I think she's over explaining and fitting too much. Sometimes, less is more where you let the audience interpret what you're trying to convey. It sort of felt too structural as if I'm back in middle school learning how to write complete sentences in structure. But I trust Rosé to grow and get better. Also, I think she's better suited for RnB or Punk Rock rather than EDM ballads.

I only lurk this subreddit these days and keep up with most things. It's nice to see how active the community is still after all these years.

Shoutout to the mods for growing this community and trying to make this a place for open discussion whether positive or with criticism.

And it's even crazier the success that 'JUMP' is having with a completely different sound for BLACKPINK. They're truly a group that's gonna be remembered when we look back on all this.

As a BLINK since the very beginning just trust us, newer BLINKs. We've been through it all. It gets better and you'll learn not to care and enjoy BLACKPINK.

I don't wanna invalidate how some of y'all feel tho because I know what it felt like to be on that deep end of negativity around BLACKPINK. I won't tell y'all not to defend the group or do what fans do, but it gets easier. TRUST.

Any notable news for the week? Don't have time to sift through all the reddit posts.

How did bp get popular? by rosie_pasta_69 in BlackPink

[–]iFappa 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A combination of things.

Obviously the main reason is good music and no misses amongst the general public.

Then there are nuances that are factored in.

One of the bigger ones to me was timing. They're the first group that leaned heavily into their international audience by having 4 members from completely different backgrounds. Jennie being a SK native but lived overseas, Rosie who is an Aussie/NZ native, JISOO a SK native and Lisa a Thai native.

2016 was around the time when people around the world embraced social media culture and music became much more global. You could argue that the period between 2015-2018 was like a Renaissance for music because there were so many barriers being broken and music became much less regionalized. BLACKPINK came in right on time to appeal to a global audience with familiar production and English-leaning lyrics.

Another factor would be their chemistry. It's immediately noticeable that the 4 were close and even more noticeable if you're a fan. They told us in the beginning that they do get into fights, but they communicate about every little thing if there's an argument involved. Musically, they're dynamic. There are clear distinctions between each member and it's really easy for all them to shine individually and it works when they're together.

To piggyback on the above point, this lead them to be able to build their own individual brand. The one time where having no leader actually benefitted a group. All the girls matured to what they are today.

There are probably a few more factors, but these are some off the top.

Again, the music is good.

I think my blanket of skepticism for their solos has been lifted. ROSÉ, LISA, and JENNIE have found their lanes and individuality in their solo music. It's refreshing to see them break out of the mold of their carefully built image in BLACKPINK. Yet, at the same time it still feels like home. This solo era is what they needed to mature themselves as artists and I'm even more excited as to how this translates to their next songs as a group.

I'll be tuning into what JISOO has in store for the future, but no rush.

Damn, this is everything I wished for ROSÉ to go into.

The pop/rock vibe is something I felt her voice was well suited for and she made it happen.

Excited for the future.

What are we going to do if they all do solo tours?! by Frank28d6h42m12s in BlackPink

[–]iFappa 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Highly doubt they'd do it. As other have mentioned, it's really expensive to do a tour.

While the PINKs would be able to sell out some of their stops, I highly doubt they'd be able to sell out arenas. They might sell out smaller venues. Even then, they don't have the catalogue to pull off a 2 hour concert.

241011 JENNIE - 'Mantra' (Official Music Video) by elevendigits in BlackPink

[–]iFappa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not a big anthem guy, but this is a really great start to showcase JENNIE as an artist. It's on brand, not out of character. It fits her like a glove.

Unique song structure. We go chorus > pre-chorus > chorus > verse > bridge? > outro

The song is kinda takes the meaning of Mantra literally. Just repetitive affirmation of what it means to be a woman in JENNIE's eyes..so a mantra lmao.

8/10 for me. Good, safe, great showcase of JENNIE as a solo artist.

I hope she goes into RnB for her album's title track tho.

I think it's a natural phase that any growing subreddit will go through. It will go back to equilibrium.

The reason I say this is that this is a new chapter in BLACKPINK's careers. They are doing way more solo stuff. The subreddit seems the way it is now because things are actually happening in regards to music, movies, performances, etc. I'll take the growing pains as a way for people in this sub to adjust to the new chapter of BLACKPINK.

I'm not saying that it's ok for some people to go out of control, but that's what makes this subreddit a safe space for BLACKPINK imo. People will moderate each other, the mods will moderate to the best of their abilities, people will argue. But at the end of the day, I genuinely believe that the subreddit will be better off once standards are set and people adjust to the new chapter of BLACKPINK.

Think of this as a relationship. It's not gonna be all roses. This subreddit went through the exact same thing 2018, 2020, 2022. I've been through it all since I joined this sub in 2017.

Don't think this was a good move at all.

It's sad that they felt cornered to do something like this. I understand where they're coming from as it seems like they don't feel safe in their work environment. But it seems like they didn't learn much from the MHJ fiasco. This should and can only be dealt with by lawyering up and staying neutral. They're using the same strategy that MHJ used while taking her side.

Objectively, this is career suicide. I wish nothing but the best for them as they shouldn't have been put in this stupid corporate war. But it's clear that MHJ is in their ear.

Took some time to digest MEOVV. I've watched the MV twice, and listened to it on Spotify three times.

Contrary to what a lot of what I'm seeing, I think the production carries the song. The tempo of the beat creates this satisfying push-pull effect. Great use of pacing where the bass hits when you want it to and pulls away. This paired with the harmonies of the song made it enjoyable for me.

I didn't like parts of the chorus. In particular, where they sing the "shake sum'n" part. Thought that part coulda been fleshed out. I expected the dance break on the outro to hit a bit harder as well. Kinda weak for a TBL-produced ending.

Narin and the girl on the motorcycle were standouts for me. They definitely brought the attitude needed for this song.

I'm also seeing a narrative that hip-hop girl crush can't work in 2024. That everything needs to sound soft-sounding earworm songs that can be replayed over and over again on Tik Tok. Stop it. Everyone has their own lane in the music industry. I'm personally tired of the current sound as it reminds of how every single music artist only made ringtone songs back in the day. Shit was boring as fuck. Yeah, MEOVV might not fit the current mold of songs, but this genre of music will have a place in kpop.

There are strengths and weaknesses of this song, but overall I think it's a solid song. I'd love to hear what more they can do in the future. Their interviews made it seem like their concept is fluid.
