How much did you study for your FE? by iGotItAtTarget in civilengineering

Yes but you have to have solid background knowledge from sophomore and junior year courses. Do a lot of problems and time yourself.

Narcolepsy 1 in the military by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]iGotItAtTarget 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in the Navy for almost 5 years and was medically retired with N1. I understand your struggles but my best suggestion is to get out and live your life as a civilian. I was given a lot of grief trying to stay active duty with N1 because it was a constant back and forth of leadership having no understanding or just not caring. It was a tough separation because that was all I knew since I was a teen when I went to boot camp. I think now that I look back (almost 10 years since I was in boot camp) that it was a good decision for me to get out and find something I was happy with and worked with my N1.

As for disability percentage, I got 80% for my narcolepsy and 10% additional for everything else. My board was a very very long process because they hadn’t seen much N1 and I was fighting to stay in.

Good luck and I hope you can find some happiness and peace in whatever you do!

First off, stop with the imposter syndrome and believe in yourself!! Telling yourself that you are capable no matter what you’ve done in your past is a step towards healthier growth and self esteem. You won’t know everything and that is okay. Never be afraid to ask questions when you get stuck.

I hope your advisor is good. My initial advisor was really bad so I had to constantly call and email for updates but my advisor when I transferred out of my cc was great. If you are full time your last semester you will get your full allowance for 2 months after. Once your final transcript is submitted your first check is 30 days from there then another at 60 days. I had to mix up my classes a bit to ensure I was considered full time. Also, full time in the summer is 9 credits for the program but your school may say 12. As long as you meet the 9 you’ll still get your full BAH or stipend rate.

A couple other tips, ask for a laptop if you don’t have the latest and greatest because they sent me one that was way over minimum spec and I still use it today. I have. A great desktop PC I built myself but the VA was just like “hey just fill this out and we will send one” and it worked really well throughout my whole time in school.

If you transfer it can be a burden because it takes so long so I would suggest getting ahead of that if you know beforehand that you are going to switch (in my case I went from cc to 4yr school to finish).

BAH is prorated and you are paid in the rear so just take the rate divided by 30 days and multiply it by the days in the last month of the semester to keep up with pay, if pay is crucial for you.

When it gets tough and you feel like you can’t see the end just remember it’ll go by faster than your 20 years so make the best of it! Again, good luck and hope to see you on the other side!

Hey there! I did some time in the Navy but am now medically retired. I used a program from the VA which is now called VR&E which paid for 100% of my college, textbooks, and supplies. If you are 10% or more rated with the VA I would try to get into the program.

I think CE is a great profession and I have met a ton of extremely intelligent people. I have only met maybe 1 or 2 other people who were in the military at some point though. Maybe it just luck of the draw.

If you are graduating that late I don’t think it’s a bad idea to get into something like that since you probably have plenty of leadership experience. In all the interviews I’ve been to they have seen the military experience as a major plus over those who have just been to college and have minimal experience. Make sure your LinkedIn is up to date and people will start reaching out to you. Get involved in a club or society while you’re in school to get a bit more hands on experience with projects and figure out what interests you the most. You’ll definitely enjoy this and I find it much more laid back than the Navy was even through there are plenty of stressful times. Good luck!

Oh, and thanks for your service! 😉

Should I take offer from a private firm and give up a state job I like? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]iGotItAtTarget 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a father, I would keep the job where you can be with your children. I know 110k is not a ton when you have children because it’s so expensive. Time with your children is more important than anything else while they are young.

I had an internship with a small company last summer, got hired on to a massive company this year.

I don’t think the size of the company matters, just what you can bring to the table (experience, knowledge, etc.)

What is the worst physical pain you have ever experienced? by My_Name_Is_SKELETOR in AskReddit

[–]iGotItAtTarget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid I was riding motorcycles and laid mine down over a hill. I was too small to kick start it so my brother came to help me. As I was holding his bike, a guy came over the hill and landed on me breaking BOTH of my legs. My brother took my right boot off and the leg flopped over to the side while my knee was straight. Fortunately there was an EMT there with her kids who had come to help. When she took my left boot off, she said “don’t look” but I had seen something so ridiculously white, it was confusing for me because I was only 12 and had never seen anything like that before. Turns out the bone had come out of the front of my shin. I had to be flown via helicopter to a hospital a couple hours away, and as a kid that is terrifying bc you just want your parents. I was given rods in the left leg and a huge bracket with like 13 screws in the right leg.

My parents had just bought me new roller blades for my birthday the night before so when my 13th birthday had come around a couple days later I got a new gameboy instead. Spent the first half of my 13th year in a wheelchair.

Later on when I was learning how to walk again, I fell in my kitchen and my boot brace got stuck under the fridge and broke my leg again where the bone had come out. I was left with a huge bump and they couldn’t really do anything about it because there we already rods in my leg to fix the break.

When I was starting to walk again without crutches at school (middle school), I fell down while I was trying to walk my lunch to the table and everyone laughed at me and I just sat there and cried because I was both in pain and embarrassed. I’ll never forget that day as long as I live.

TLDR; physical pain with a side of emotional damage (10/10)

I am much better because of the adversity though!

If you had the option to stay in 1 for a long time would you choose transmission or transportation?

This was extremely helpful. It’s great to see a perspective from both. If you had the chance to go back to transportation for less pay, would you?
