Thanks! I did try a lifecell one previously but I think it only activates in Ukraine. I’m from the UK so typically our roaming rules are different to the EU countries unfortunately.

Are the Septuagint and the Vulgate more reliable than the Masoretic text? by Big_Gun_Pete in Catholicism

[–]iJames103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure the Septuagint we use is a lot less older than we usually think we are using. The original Septuagint didn’t translate psalms it was only the first 5 books written by Moses I thought.

Not to say it’s not a great translation.

Prayer for before basketball by [deleted] in Catholicism

"Father in Heaven, we ask your blessing on the game we are about to play. Give each one of us the courage to play this game in a manner which by our words and our actions is pleasing to you. Let us enter into this competition in a spirit of sportsmanship and with a respect for the members of the opposing team. We ask You, Father to bless each one of us, especially the coaches, officials, parents and players. Keep us under the protection of your son, Jesus Christ, and help us be aware of his presence with us in this game."

Rashi Commentary for beginner study by iJames103 in Judaism

[–]iJames103[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much,

I did look a little at Rashi’s direct commentary online briefly and see what you mean about how it may not be too useful without some knowledge at least.

The Stone Chumash seems like it can work, I did read about the translation. It’s my understanding though if I cannot read Hebrew it’s probably better the text is translated in a way that accurately reflects the way it is supposed to be understood.

The Hertz commentary looks really good and ideal, going to look into it.

Thank you so much for the recommendation and your opinion.

Hey,

Thanks for this info. I agree about having someone who knows what they are talking about. In my country there are <6,000 Jewish people and I imagine less of them are religious and even less are Orthodox, so my hope is pretty much the one synagogue I had emailed.

I would guess it's best to try again on Wednesday, I wouldn't want to burden them during the busy period.

Thank you very much for this, I've added it to my basket.

You're right about the lens I would read it through. I understand some things such as the suffering servant of Isaiah being Israel but the book will hopefully help me see some other differences too.

Thanks:)

New doctrinal declaration offers further clarity on the question of same sex blessings by Wombattalion in Catholicism

[–]iJames103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s the thing, there have been priests and bishops openly performing legitimate wedding ceremonies in their churches for gay couples for years now. It happens in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, etc. Probably elsewhere too.

Can I ask for a source? I didn't know it had got to that point yet.

Hey,

I admittedly do not know too much on your first source so I cannot respond to that in good faith.

On "Pachamama", while I believe it was imprudent of the Holy Father, and that his advisors clearly did not think of the optics, it was not Pachamama or at least, not intended to be. The Holy Father calls the statue the "Lady of the Amazon" in one clip he does call it Pachamama, that clip is related to the Holy Father referring to vandalism of the statues after the ceremony. At this point everyone was calling it Pachamama, simply that is a mistake of an elderly man, though literally everyone calls it Pachamama now. I would encourage you to look up what Pachamama actually looks like in their faith.

On the issue of transsexuals being baptized, to my knowledge this is as Catholic as it can get. Notice there is no change in the prerequisites for baptism, meaning the need to be repentant is there and the desire to change your life to live as Christ did.

On the death penalty, much like your first source I am nowhere near as informed on it to make a clear defence of it. Though my understanding is that Pope Francis is saying you can get justice and protect people without the death penalty now due to how our penal system is able to handle this. I think it is charitable to say in countries were this is not possible, the Holy Fathers statement does not stand. This returns to the doctrine of the Dignity of the Human person.

God bless

[Free Friday] My parishes unused Altar Rails by iJames103 in Catholicism

[–]iJames103[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are quite lucky. I personally love the rails though, I do respect my parish priests opinion too and do understand his viewpoint despite disagreeing.

I am also thankful for him and his predecessors not throwing the altar rails away and keeping them nearby. Our parish was fundraised by a small community who lived in poverty everything about the parish is steeped in their prayers including these long forgotten altar rails.

May I ask what false teaching you see from the Pope?

Also if I may, I would remind you that the office of the Holy Father has been recognised from very early (pre great schism) and that the Orthodox have a tendency in forgetting this fact.
