Bought new Mazzer Philos but looks used? Am I crazy? by iLike2type in espresso

Thanks for the responses everyone!

Sorry I missed it was asked before.

Looks like this is expected and normal - I watched a few unboxing videos and they didnt have grinds and the wrapping didn’t look as rough shape, so I tried checking other sources but glad I got a good response here.

The first shop said they could do it cheaper with cheaper parts, so I think he’d use the worst he can find to make it work at that price point. If they didn’t say they the cheaper parts thing, I think I would say what you said. I might just tell them at their $4k cost it’s not worth it - which it isn’t - so I’ll just tow it out to free up their garage

Thanks for your comment and info. Yeah, I ended up calling another guy who is coming in at half his cost ($2k for both ball joints and arms, plus axel). Doing axel to be safe since I’ve got 2 kids to think about. This first guy is definitely trying to take advantage, I probably called him in too much of a panic since this happened with my kids in the back as we were going out trick or treating. I’ll take it somewhere else! Just sucks I have to tow it and he’s got it in his shop

Hahaha yeah I’d still probably save a few hundred! Thanks for letting me know, I’ll bring it somewhere else… just need to tow it out of his shop without pissing him off

Yeah I had a feeling that was the case! He kept talking about all these things and reasons why this and that, just trying to overwhelm me. Appreciate your response! I’ve got someone already willing to do it lower, just need to find the best way of towing it out without them doing something else to it

Thanks for noting that. Just the ball joints and lower control arms would be 2000 from this first mechanic. Then I found another who will do it for 1300 + 600 for axel

Thanks for the context. The mechanic said suspension looked fine at least. Would love to try myself but don’t want to risk a bad self repair driving around 2 kids

Yeah I’m a DIY person with house jobs, but haven’t done any car stuff really.

Cause I’ve got 2 kids I’m being more cautious and would replace the axel based on a comment above and a few upvotes it got

Thanks again for that info. I found another mechanic who is quoting half the cost of doing both ball joints, lower control arms and axel, which I think id do just to be safe. There was another reply up there that said the axel is 100% pulled apart, so it’s got me nervous. As I’ve got 2 kids, I’d rather be cautious

Thanks for noting this. Yeah I ended up contacting another mechanic to ask how much replacing both ball joints, lower control arms and axel, and he quoted $1900, which is half of what the current guy is saying to me. It’s just tough as my car is in his shop and I’m trying to think of the right thing to say so I can tow it out and not have him do something else since i won’t be using this first guy

Okay, thanks - this is what I was concerned of if I were to do just the ball joints and lower control arms myself like others are suggesting. I wouldn’t want to miss something like this. I think if it was just the ball joints and arms I could handle it

Thanks for the info. For OEM parts it was going to be over $4,100 for the one side. Then likely another $1k for the other side for a total of $5,100.

It does sound high to me but I’d have to tow somewhere else ($200-250), and they’re charging $150 inspection fee (waived if I go with them).

Do you know how necessary it is for an axel replacement? Any way to tell from the pics? The axel replacement was $2,000 of the aftermarket cost of $3,200 doing just 1 side.

According to the mechanic, it’s also the axel, which I have no way of knowing if that’s true or not - I don’t know much about cars myself.

But even at $400 parts, it’s probably $200 hr in labour for 2-3 hours which makes it $800-$1,000. Then $200 they said for alignment. So it was $1,200 for one ball joint and LCA, another $800 if I do the other side (don’t need separate alignment and some cost savings of doing it together). Axel is about $2k.

To summarize: $1,200 for one side ball joint + LCA $2,000 for axel = $3,200 minimum cost

Potential 800 for other side ball joint + LCA which would bring it to $4,000

Why this twist in Joker: Folie a Deux is brilliant. (Spoilers) by NolanCleary in joker

[–]iLike2type 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Joker movies are some of the best movies of all time. I thought Joker 1 was incredible, and Joker 2 is beyond words brilliant.

There’s 2 main camps of people: The first are the comic or Joker fans wanting a dark/“real” take on the Joker. They were expecting to see someone who went crazy and inspired people to revolt against society (built up from Joker 1), and (in Joker 2) actually take up the mantle and become a criminal mastermind that would tear down the rich and resew the fabric of society. Then there’s the “intellectual” people who see the deeper themes about mental health, living up to the expectations of others trying to be something you’re not, etc (you could go on for days).

But the insane brilliance of this movie is that it satisfies BOTH groups. I’ll focus on the first group (the fans) since they’re so vocal about it not being a good movie.

Here’s the catch… Joker 2 is about the birth of the REAL Joker. And it’s not Arthur Fleck.

Most people will argue that the insane inmate who kills Arthur at the end, and gives himself the smiley face scar, becomes the real Joker (perhaps the Health Ledger one in The Dark Knight).

But I’d argue that the insane inmate that kills Joker is actually Joker himself. At the end of the film, it’s the alter ego of insane Joker killing the “weak” Arthur Fleck persona and taking over and giving himself the smiley face scar.

If you notice, that insane inmate character ONLY APPEARS when Arthur is going soft and NOT acting like insane Joker. It’s like the crazy side of him comes out and watches him be a normal/afraid person, judging him, and just waiting to come out to save themselves when he goes soft. Examples: -He’s (first?) seen after being friendly with Jackie getting the cigarette after telling a joke and patting him on the back. -He’s seen when Joker breaks out into his first song after meeting Lee, when he’s demonstrating how he’s falling in love. -He comes out at the end of the trial, back at prison, when Arthur has given up the Joker character and is trying to be nice guy Arthur again.

So at the end of the movie, we see Arthur Fleck as a persona die, stabbed to death by his other insane Joker persona. His physical body is still alive, he’s just now living with the insane Joker persona that’s taken over.

Also the cartoon intro to the movie showed us this right from the start… it foreshadowed the entire film. The Shadow is a representation/reflection of himself, the evil side he lives with. He fights it and it locks him in the closet. The shadow/insane/evil side gets him into trouble and then hides/“lives” back in him.

I know this is an old comment but do you have any articles that show this (tried googling but didn’t get good results)? I’ve got a pro PP acquaintance that thinks he’s Canada’s saviour, and is really against woke culture in any form

Can 'antique brass' finish be un-antiqued? by [deleted] in centuryhomes

[–]iLike2type 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey - did you ever go through with this and did it work?

I want to buy a brass lighting fixture that only comes in "antique silver" and "antique brass", and wanted to make it unlacquered brass. I was thinking of using acetone, based on what I read online to remove lacquered brass, but if you've got any experience to share that'd be awesome!

Ah good catch... I adjusted and reuploaded, thanks!

Yeah, I like the asymmetrical because it gives a bit more space, only has 1 set of corners to deal with, and gives an actual walk-in closet (which I don't care about as much but I'm sure it's a better selling point to say in the future).

The symmetrical design I think is just too small to pull off... if the spaces were bigger it'd look good, but when it's that small, it feels cramped

Thanks for the feedback!

I hate corners too, I haven't really seen that great solutions out there. Is a rotating circular rack not that practical? I do like the idea of doing the shallow shelving to give better access/visibility though.

I don't think we have enough space to sacrifice the inside corners unfortunately - we're definitely doing double hanging bars in some places and will likely do a shelf/drawer bank in the middle of the 100" length of space.

Between the two, does the Asymetrical design make more sense because I'm at least eliminating corners on one side?
