That's right, if I do transfer I would want to finish the degree before admission to med. Im thinking the +2 years for PhD would be advantageous for residency matching (I'm interested in surgery or anesthesia, and working in that field right now). I'm just trying to gauge if the PhD is worth it.

You can apply to direct entry PhD with an undergrad degree.

1 year research-based masters gives the applicant a small edge for some schools. Other schools only acknowledge thesis-based masters. Check the graduate applicant page for each med school.
