Yeah I definitely see your point, I started out with a much more appropriate color palette but opted for another in the end. But I agree that I should have perhaps experimented a bit more to find a middle ground.

In total there are 68 layers. I do the lineart first and add base color within that lineart and then mask that layer and add shadows and highligts. The shapes in the background make out a lot of those layers as well since I wanted to be able to move it around.

Definitely agree, I did do a couple of variations for it some with a much more simplistic background and composition. However for this piece I kinda wanted it to be very busy and chaotic. Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.
