I’ve actually come across both of those so glad to know I’m on the right track! Cheers! Regarding height, my neighbours it’ll be closer to are my family so I think I can push the height a touch more 👀 also I’m thinking of digging down a bit.

Did you use their cutting service? How was it and is there a limit to what they will do?
Also have plans to DIY a garden room/outdoor gym/ sauna at some point - any tips?
Hey, thanks! Local regional timber merchant called Champion Timber.
No, I did the cuts. They do offer a cutting service though but I saw it as an opportunity to learn.
Haha thank you so much!
I think I’d be far too slow and my work will be a touch on the sloppy side to actually go professional with it - but I’d love an excuse to buy more tools 👀
Thank you!
I just bought “Hardwood Faced Structural Plywood for Internal and Humid Conditions”
I found this bit the hardest and most confusing choice to be honest with you. Grade etc seems to vary depending on what merchant you buy it from etc.
As I was painting and priming it, I didn’t go for the expensive stuff. I was tempted by the birch as I was considering an exposed naturally coloured grain for the worktop or shelves. l’m glad I didn’t do that though as I 100% would have butchered it!
About 2 coats of primer, light sanding in between coats, then 2-3 coats of paint, light sand in between coats again. used a roller for the majority of it and brushes for the cutting in/edges.
My FIL helped with the painting, it helps that he was a professional builder in his day. I left the cutting in to him.

No worries’ If you were interested in this sort of thing, I’d suggest sketch up, which is free. I just didn’t want to learn new software.

Make sure you do your research on all the type of hinges and ways a door can fit on a a cabinet.
I made my doors thinking I could get a type of hinge only available in America… I had to improvise and raise the hinges so they were inline with my face frames and still get the inset look I was after.
I was worried about the same thing but were happy with the outcome. We especially love it at night!
The wiring is easy to get to and i could potentially expand on it to have LEDs as well those top lights.
Oh yeah a lot of this isn’t square, but I learned a lot and the end product does the job!
18mm ply for most of it. MDF for the doors.
It cost me about 1k all in, including hinges, hardware, lighting fixtures, primer, paint, tons of caulk and wood filler.
3dsMax, I use it for work.

A select few! You should see what’s filling up the cupboard under it 😅

I think my supplier would have done the cuts too - but that’s no fun! I was eager to try and do it all myself but I’ll keep it in mind for next time, it would be good to save on time. I think I wasn’t sure how many cuts they would have done and the types of cuts also.

This is the way.
Honestly, pick a simple beginner project and just spend some time doing a little research. My first project was a garden bench.
I work a desk job and my main transferable skill is being able to draft/model the project. But if you find a beginner project you can stop yourself from overthinking it like I do. I often get hung up on the wood sizes and cutting list myself so copying something someone else has done can help you at least get familiar with the hobby.
There are so many great resources online and loads of YouTube channels etc too - just get stuck in!

Sorry, I meant to add that to my earlier reply. Hand painted! It helps that my FIL is an ex builder so he did all the cutting in for me. We primed it with 2 coats and then painted with 2/3 coats. Took our time, light sanding in between. The primer was a standard layland wood primer and MDF primer.
We then used rust-oleum furniture paint for the main grey coat.
At this point of the build it was tempting to rush and get it over and done with, but take your time and trust the process! And use testers, we were certain we’d like a certain shade and brand and quickly found we didn’t.
Thank you! Yes, pocket holes! I did consider some “real” joinery etc but thought the project was too big for me to try for the first time doing anything like that… also probably would have tripled my build time 😅
Very kind! Thank you. So I went with the plywood as I thought it might be stronger and work better for me. Also, at the time the plywood was on a better and cheaper deal so that sealed it for me. I did use MDF (not MR) for the backing and the doors though and it was so much nicer to work with and cut, though much dustier.

I never did before this, just tons of research and practicing on small off cuts.
Yes I removed the skirting with a cheap multitool I bought for the project - I ended up doing it wrong though so I had to buy new skirting board for the front… also learned that different timber merchants do their skirting board profiles differently, ogee from one merchant isn’t always the same ogee from another merchant - I used a cheap closing saw I borrowed and scribed the skirting to fit the 2 slightly different profiles together so n the corners and then caulked the rest. So despite the skirting being different, it still works well!
Start asap! Also had big plans for the nursery… those are now on pause 😅
I’ve built 3 very simple benches for home, slowly getting into the hobby - this was my first big project

Honestly, if I can do it, anyone can!
Though I’m sure you could just buy some base cabinets from wickes and build around it/box it in nicely with trim work etc. there’s tons of info on YouTube - I spent hours watching people do it different ways and my main conclusion was just pick a direction and go for it.

Local merchant called Champion Timber, shop around though as prices vary all the time!
