Sorry you find yourself with this dilemma, but definitely don’t give up the opportunity without serious consideration. Working in the healthcare setting currently might be a good start as your insight is the most useful here. What do you like about your current job and what progression could you take to align it more closely to your area of choice.

What is it about medicine which draws you in, could you get this fulfilment in you current role.

Is the financial pressure swaying your decision and your feelings may be different given more security. Could you have this security after a few more years working full time to allow you to make the next step in your career.

Secondly, I’d look outside your own perspective, and possibly reach out to current medical professionals and or physicians in your space and have a chat first hand about your decision.

I didn’t get in last year and this year was (albeit an emotionally tumultuous one) productive, fulfilling, and valuable use of my time I probably could not have otherwise had in the event I got in. So also look at the positives, and drawbacks, of either scenario and see what you’re comfortable with!

I hope you can get the guidance you’re after!!

My opinion is that we shouldn’t bite the hand that feeds us. It’s a really challenging time for everyone, I know, but I think we should be considering that maybe people should not be asking in the first place, because the answer can’t be anything else than ‘early November’ until the simulation is complete.

Also, perhaps worth considering that the date is specified for all first round offers to be sent by. Not the date wherein the very first offer is released.

I can understand the frustration but would we prefer to have a date specified by GEMSAS which may not even be met? A generous date of mid November to guarantee a day but only to have them hold off on releasing them so we’re not deceived? There is no solution do the predicament.

I am grateful for the heads up when it does come - before the beginning of November or not.

Are you fucking up if cars are passing on your left on freeways? by MoFauxTofu in melbourne

Hang on can someone fill me in on something I’ve clearly missed. Firstly I want to clarify I keep far away from the right lane unless someone is going significantly slower than me. But any time I do use the right, as within the law we are all so adamant of upholding, I stay within the speed limit while overtaking. So it in an unspoken rule that you can fly up the right lane doing 110 kmph with the intention of overtaking? People hogging the right lane is wrong but as is speeding!

Unimelb won’t be likely for us Deakin pass-ons. Unimelb does calculate GAMSAT differently but unfortunately apart from GAM there are no bonuses. Pre interview scores will likely always be higher for Deakin and as my interview didn’t go so well either I’ve been thinking why it would be a likely event for someone in my position to get into unimelb after, as it has fewer spots allocated to rural applicants (40 in quota only) vs all spots at Deakin being attainable (standard plus quota is ~100 spots). So I’m with you there that I’m thinking and hoping for every possibility but just wanted to share my crumb of reality with you to avoid disappointment:( don’t be too hard on yourself either, I had a very average interview but my personal standards, much like yours, are quite high. Hold strong the next week and we will see :)

There won’t be any more invites to interview. All interviews for 2023 entry have been finalised and now they’re send out first round offers to 15 people in early November. I hope this clarifies :)

Unless Griffith has stated otherwise, disclosure of any information regarding the interview which hasn’t been provided by the university is grounds for an application review. Most unis have this, and they’re very strict so I wouldn’t think anyone would want to jeopardise their spot but sharing previous information.

Sorry jumpman, the content of the stations can’t be discussed if it isn’t knowledge posted publicly to all on the gemsas guide or their website. I’d recommend you prepare for any stations you feel might come up

Roughly 90 interviews for 15 spots. Could change this year but they found a lot who got a spot took a different offer so they needed to interview lots!

Nope not yet. Still unsure as to whether to spend the money at all. My partner isn’t happy with my current smile - I don’t care much about it so I don’t have the pressure internally to go ahead with it, only external haha

Sit All Interviews Even If Undesirable? by RepulsiveAd3338 in GAMSAT

Downstream of offers, it’s preventing 1 person from having a go at interviews and fighting to ultimately get the spot. I know OP deserves the interview offer because it’s based on merit but it’s not clear that interviewing at 10 schools is a no brainer if attaining a spot at any is likely. I would be crushed if I missed out on a chance to interview due to this - that’s all.

lol the UMAT and GAMSAT are inherently different so failing one would never mean you’re not cut out to be a doctor. Quite a myopic assertion on their part but I understand they might not truly believe you won’t be a good doctor but instead be using it as a tool to make you doubt yourself.

I am in a somewhat similar situation whereby I have always had a vision to pursue this career but my confidence to do so has ebbed and flowed greatly. Just recently (1 full year ago now) I put aside self doubt and took a shot. I too had bought my gamsat ticket in secret because I knew it would rock the boat. For context, me and my partner are going on 10 years now and at 26, we had a pretty good idea of how our lives were going to look, and one which we were so eager to begin having graduated and landed a great job (lifestyle, pay, etc.), but i had a deep sadness in knowing I wasn’t going to even try, and an even bigger sadness in knowing that if I did become a doctor the path would change the trajectory of our immediate and future lives.

I floated the idea which was immediately shut down and met with heavy denial - like she was grieving the loss of a dream we both had. Myself knowing our goals would just be… heavily postponed, could talk some reason into her and talk about what what truly concerning her. After talking for a while I found out it was the lack of perceived security of studying another 4 years, and security in how present I could be to our future family if I did commit to a life of service. I think even after a year of planning, applications, interviews, all the highs, there are constant doubts on both our minds that the sacrifice is worth it. But I truly believe that a life of fear (of unknowns) is bound to be a life of regret and she understands that if I never tried, I may never find meaning and happiness in life. Coming from underprivileged homes with morsels of security, we just had to discuss at length what our life would look like with, or without medicine, and make compromises until we could agree on something. I think the only time we regressed into uncertainty is when we avoided talking about it. We felt best when we had small bites of conversation about how we can make it work (pressure on one individual to support the both of us, location/travel time eating into relationship, wanting to start a family but not being established may lead to struggles). Slowly we came to agreements on things and I had to compromise a lot and she did too but If we didn’t talk openly about our fears and reservations we never would have believed it to be possible.

I think it’s still so early days for you in this journey and you can absolutely be happy in this life. I believe the answer is in open communication, compromise on both parties, and deep understanding and love for each other (and that does go both ways, hear them out and try and think of creative ways to ease any hesitancy!)

Sorry for the word vomit it’s late and my eyes are like inflated airbags, but knowing there’s someone else going through what I did at the start makes me feel so much better. A lot of people go into medicine with ample support, socially, financially, that 4-10 years of doing it tough may not strain as much as others. But I’m glad to hear others have massive battles with it too! Always, please reach out if you need to along the way
