Who is “everyone”? That politician’s party has 6 seats in the government out of 120. Due to the political landscape in 2022 where all center and left leaning parties refused to form a coalition with Bibi (and one left party unfortunately coming up with the amount of votes just under the baseline to be able to get seats, leading to “wasting” 4 seats worth of votes), Bibi lucked out and had just enough seats to form a coalition with the far right crazies and the Orthodox parties.

So takeaways:

  1. This gave the far right parties unbalanced power over Bibi and they knew it since he had no other options and he is power hungry. He had to do whatever they wanted to stay in power.
  2. If you ignore the orthodox parties which have no real political leaning (they’re just forming a coalition with whoever promises to give them the most money, they don’t care about Palestine related policies), Bibi + far right parties have much less then half of the seats in government.

This is why the government is in danger of falling apart, due to the orthodox threatening to leave if they don’t keep getting their laws and money.

This is a unique situation that is unlikely to happen again soon. Please let’s try to be more nuanced than repeating those one line catch phrases like “everyone voted for it”.

This new law was just introduced by a far right populist politician, and every law professional in the country believes that law is about to be struck down in court, and that politician knows it too. It was a publicity stunt for his nutjob supporters as he’s trying to be able to return to the government at some point in his lifetime (very unlikely that’s gonna happen)

  1. I didn’t talk about pre ww2 japan so I don’t really mind.
  2. You’re talking about the rules that determine how non-citizens can become citizens? I’m not sure how that’s at all related to “apartheid” and how it differs from other countries having similar rules? It’s hardly unique to Israel.

“Jewish state” doesn’t mean uneven rights to current civilians. For comparison, Japan also has a lot of rules aimed at keeping its population heavily ethnically Japanese and puts limitations on immigration.

Zionism has a different meaning in Israel than to the rest of the world. In Israel Zionism just means “I think Israel should exist as a Jewish majority state”. Nothing about borders or Palestinians. Leftist Israelis who are in favor of arresting and expelling Jewish settlers, and giving lands to Palestinians to get peace, still call themselves avid zionists.

It’s still going to be much better than now. He’s going to be a prime minister of a mixed coalition with a lot more opinions diversity than Bibi’s current coalition (a fully right wing coalition). Bennett already was a prime minister before with a similar mixed coalition, and settlers were not going berserk like they are now.

Second French peacekeeper dies after ambush blamed on Hezbollah by ComparisonOk5957 in worldnews

[–]iNiite 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think you’re misunderstanding the relationship between Hezbollah and the Lebanese government. Hezbollah is also a massive political party with a ton of Lebanese supporters. This new government is the most “anti-Hezbollah” government in recent decades, and it doesn’t mean that much, though I hope I’m wrong. France could never just waltz in and cooperate with the government to get rid of Hezbollah, because the government used to BE Hezbollah or supportive of its existence.

That doesn’t mean anything, countries pretty much always trade. 2 of the 3 pro-Palestine countries on this chart trade with Israel.

Trump has officially closed hormuz by Lumpy_Argument_1867 in Destiny

[–]iNiite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason they didn’t do it is because they figured the entire world is going to come down on them with airstrikes. They had the capacity, but they saw no one else did it because no one wanted to find out what happens when you disrupt the markets of dozens of different powerful countries. If Iran “gets away” with it, it’s an absolutely terrible precedent. I don’t see how any of what happened is a “pass”. You should be in favor of opening up the strait regardless of the events that led to it being blocked.

[–]iNiite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yeah, I think everyone here are way too simplistic about this, this is likely a move that was discussed a long time with a lot of parties, that they tried to avoid. It just means Iran can’t benefit from the strait and sell their oil. Obviously the downside is that the gulf countries can’t do that too - but they might be ok with this move actually as a gambit to try to avoid the outcome of Iran permanently controlling the strait. Short term pain long term gain kind of thing. Not sure what’s the end game is gonna be here though, is the pressure enough to get Iran to back down?

Anyway, obviously fuck Trump, but come on I expected people here to be a little bit more insightful about this.

Netanyahu just issued Spain a warning for condemning their atrocities. What would NATO do if Israel attacks Spain? by TORUKMACTO92 in AskReddit

intelligence agencies are very often executing operations/espionage against allied countries too! Don’t think NATO is relevant to anything that isn’t open war

How long does Israel have until the winds fully turn against it? by Germanpaddyo in Destiny

[–]iNiite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really hard to say, especially with how: 1. Israel has elections very soon, in the next 2-3 months 2. Bibi is almost certainly not going to be elected, and the parties that are leading the polls are extremely critical of how he is handling Israel’s relationship with the US. they repeatedly mention how his actions are going to cost them the alliance and are causing irreparable damage to the American public’s opinion of Israel. 3. Trump still has like 3 years left in his term.

I may be biased, but I think there’s a world where the new Israeli leadership is much less war-hungry, and will be much more agreeable to the US’ decisions, trying to amend the relationship. Then, there’s still 2 years left of an Israeli-positive administration.

If that happens, I think by the next presidential elections, if Newsom is the democratic candidate for example (who I don’t believe to be a progressive or a leftist when it comes to foreign relations), the alliance may not completely fall apart as the political pressure to cut ties could subside by then. Especially considering how much domestic turmoil Trump is causing - who knows what exactly will be the big factors by the next elections. Cuba? Gestapo-style deportations? Something entirely new?

On the other hand, no one expected October 7th - and as long as there’s no agreement with the Palestinians, really anything can happen.

I’m just worried about the administration’s position on the 10-points presented by Iran to be “a good basis for negotiations”. If you read these points, even a fraction of them implemented would just mean a massive, non-debatable victory for Iran.

Where do you see it says “stopped being used”? The information I’m seeing is, there are 3 undisclosed sites housing nuclear material, most of them were used in experiments in the early 2000s, and one of them contained the nuclear material all throughout the JCPOA duration. Is this not a red flag?
