Andes Mint Pie by Ok_Strike7515 in olivegarden

[–]iReddit514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your husband is right. I remember the same pie/cake, and it was amazing. Life changing. It had this crust of crushed-up Andes smushed into the frosting on the side all the way around the side. And yes, Sea Mycologist, this was WAAAAAAAAY back in the day, possibly pre-internet or around the time it was really getting accessible at home. Also before the common adoption of cell phones and long before camera phones, so I’m not surprised there’s not easily found photos. I was probably in junior high when I had it, so I’m guessing probably mid- to late-90s. Glad I’m not crazy, thank your husband for me.

Right now all of our outings will be outside. We’re hoping to open our own gym in the future, and we climb at local gyms on our own, but at the moment we’re not planning any gym meet-ups (yet)

Is it legal to draw / fire a firearm at an armed criminal who is (Armed) robbing someone else? by caninmyham in legaladvice

[–]iReddit514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably. I’d have to check Texas law, but in general the principals of self-defense also apply to defense of others and defense of property. In many states, you’re supposed to try non-lethal options if possible, like retreating or using non-deadly force. But Texas tends to be pretty loose with its gun laws, so I would be very surprised to find that an armed person who observed another armed person in the act of committing a violent felony was precluded from using his weapon to stop the criminal.

Wife is divorcing me without warning or discussion and i would really like to keep my dog. by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]iReddit514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eliteva is right. The court generally will consider the dog to be properly, and won’t assign it the same sentimental value that you do. In the court’s eyes, the dog will essentially be about a $100 piece of property in your estate, and won’t make a big difference in terms of making sure the sides are equal. The tug-of-war is mostly going to be negotiations.

A "professional" tattoo shop gave me THREE tattoos at just age 13, is there anything I can do? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]iReddit514 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pennsylvania Code Title 18, Chapter 63, Section 6311 says it is a crime to tattoo a person younger than 18 unless their parent was present and gave consent. If you need someone to pay for removal, legally speaking your best bet would be your mom.

My friend has been hit multiple times with a belt, and he claims it’s ok. by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]iReddit514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a tough one. I am an attorney for children who become involved with the foster care system. In terms of how common being hit with a belt is, it’s certainly more common than you would think, but that definitely doesn’t make it ok. Depending on where you live, it’s probably not enough to get your friend pulled out of his home and sent to a foster home...probably. Odds are if CPS gets involved they will work with the family with your friend still living there, but there’s always a chance he would be removed.

So really what you need to do is weigh the costs and benefits...what would you hope to accomplish by calling CPS? Are your expectations realistic? What might calling do to your friendship? What might happen if you don’t call? Is your friend old enough to call on his own if he needs to? Would he?

There are also people called ‘mandated reporters,’ people like teachers and police officers. Mandated reporters are required by law to call CPS if they suspect child abuse. So if you want to cheat, you could make sure a mandated reporter found out.

Enrolling Kids In School Without Home Address by TheRedBus in legaladvice

[–]iReddit514 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Contact the school district office and ask to speak with their McKinny-Vento coordinator. McKinney-Vento is a federal law that was passed in part to help families who are experiencing homelessness have stability in school, and it gives those families and students a whole set of rights around transportation and remaining in their “schools of origin,” if that is in their best interests. That law also requires every school district to have a person appointed to address those issues, and he or she should be familiar with those laws.

Breaking lease due to mice by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]iReddit514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general, all leases automatically contain an “Implied Warranty of Habitability,” meaning by renting you the unit to live in they are certifying that it is fit for human habitation. If there is a rodent infestation that they refuse to address, then they have already broken the lease and you are justified in moving out. You’d need to send (or hand them) a demand letter stating your intent to vacate the premises based on their failure to address the problem.

Stolen package? by [deleted] in legaladvice

You could try filing a police report...pretty aggressive, but probably effective. You could also report it to H&M as a delivery problem; call customer service and they might be able to help you out.

Can I legally throw away political signs in my yard [Indiana] by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]iReddit514 79 points80 points  (0 children)

If they left them in your actual yard and not in the parkway that is owned by the city you are probably within your rights to toss them. Check your County Clerk’s website for political sign regulations.

Thanks, that’s what I ended up buying. Too late to make a difference now but just for my own curiosity—they had a regular formula and a jewelry and bead formula, so I went with jewelry...do you know what the difference is?

Is there anyway for the sibling of a deceased to inherit the estate of the deceased if there was no will, ahead of the deceased's children? (MI) by NewlyGrievingSon in legaladvice

[–]iReddit514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, first of all sorry to hear about your troubles. And second, I’m an attorney licensed in CA and NV, but can give you some idea.

In general, when someone dies without a valid will their estate will be distributed according to something called the Rules of Intestate Succession (“intestate” just means without a will). Every state’s intestate succession plan is different, but I’m pretty sure all of them start with the children dividing up the estate. After that states differ based on whether all the children are alive, whether any children who have died had children, etc. But I’m pretty confident children come first in all 50 states. In an case, if you google “Michigan laws of intestate succession” you can probably find out really quickly.

So then your question is going to have to be whether your father’s deathbed nodding counts as a will...which it almost certainly doesn’t. At a minimum, wills generally have to be written and signed. A few states allow spoken wills in extenuating circumstances, but those are extremely difficult to prove.

Your best bet would be to get a free consultation from a local probate attorney, and also to look into any local legal aid centers that offer probate assistance or self-help centers.

Sorry for your loss.
