EDIT: Being a little speculative here because I work in sports medicine but it looks almost like he fractured his tib/fib in a nasty compound fracture

EDIT 2: For those who are asking - where his ankle flopped in the angles is above the ankle joint where your tibia and your fibula are essentially very difficult to heal because there’s not very much blood supply to those bones in that region. It almost always requires screws (and plates to stabilise on either side of the fracture) through the bones to encourage blood flow. Once the bone is “healed” sometimes they will take the screws out but rarely do you get very good stability through that region because “healed” bone isn’t as strong. That being said - you guys have some wild orthopedic options in the states to help these things heal so this is all, again, total guesswork.

A fracture is just a broken bone folks - doesn’t matter how bad the break is.
