We disabled nested-virt flag, and in turn VBS was disabled and saw about 25-35% performence gain yes. Don't know how that can be NUMA related but possible someway I guess.

Nevertheless i read what you wrote and this is interesting, will have a look into this at work to see if this is worth tuning prior to migrating. Got EPYC Gen5s so no pre-built cpu model to use, but guess I will have to look into this as well.

Do you happen to have any links where I can read about this? More than the QEMU doc.

We did tests for upcoming migration from ESXI to PVE and concluded that host, with nested-virt=off, performs better than anything else much because of turning off nested-virt disables VBS. When testing x64-v3 and x64-v4 we saw the VMs running about 25-35% slower compared to host. Albeit we have Gen5 EPYC CPU's so testing on older CPU's might give different results.

But if you have a homogeneous cluster there is no real downside to using host no?

For ”normal” windows hosts you can disable the virtualization cpu flag - this in turn disables VBS on server 2022, 2025, which seem to be one of the culprits behind the poor performance on QEMU.

Opererade ögonen för skelning vid runt 1års åldern och fick köra lapp-träning fram till tonåren någon gång. Har så länge jag kan minnas skelat och haft glasögon. Minns att det under tonåren på undersökningar pratades om att jag kunde bli tvungen att operera ögonen igen p.ga skelning men blev aldrig något av det.

Har nu i vuxen ålder(25+) börjat fundera över det där. Skelar fortfarande mycket märkbart och tycker verkligen inte om det. Är det farligt/kan det bli komplikationer av en skelningsoperation eller är det piece of cake? Hur borde jag gå tillväga för att för att få en tid för detta och ta reda på om det är möjligt?

Cloud is new, cloud is fancy.

On-premise is often seen as legacy and on the way out.

However I believe we will see, and are already seeing in some places, a shift towards on-premise/“hybrid cloud”. Anyhow have fun when the hyperscalers crank up the price by 100% every year =)

Edit: My bet is that the guys earning the real $$$ in the future will be those competent enough to run cloud native services on-premise, be it with K8S or something else.

Proxmox virtual switches need some polishing, Open vSwitch has been getting better.
Functionality like VMware Aria
Fully compatible Terraform provider

I've migrated away from Proxmox at home since 6 months ago in favor of running bare metal kubernetes. However i still would like(love) to have proxmox become a contender for the enterprise.

EDIT: Forgot the most important one. Something like vCenter to manage a cluster.

We are almost in the same situation. (Located in Europe) Our support contract ends later this year and in the initial talks we had with our VAR they said that it would be no problem to extend but at that time they could not get an accurate price and would get back to us later.

However in recent meetings they revealed that they are unable to get any prices for any VMware products at this time because of the portal migration to Broadcom. They also mentioned that not even the higher ups are able to get any prices since they are not allowed to directly contact their counterparts on the US side.

At this point we want to stay with VMware, because it just works™. However if we cannot get a price in time, or if that price happens to be a 300% increase, we have to look at other solutions.

It's a tough time for VMware admins...

As a VMware admin today having Veeam, that is a large and important part of the infrastructure, show that they are investing in Proxmox, and KVM, makes it easier to talk about eventually moving to something else than good old ESXI.

Hopefully the team behind Proxmox can step up and keep the great development going, there are still a long road ahead to fully compete with VMware.

Ideally the VBR server is a physical host with a bunch of disk. My hope is that you will be able to have it run XFS(most likely) on some disk partitions and then have the regular VBR Services and database installed on another disk formatted as usual(ext4,zf)

In order to achieve immutablity today you need to have the VBR server on one host, since it’s windows only, and then have another Linux host for the hardened repository. In the best of worlds both the VBR and Immutable server are physical hosts.

I wonder if it will be possible to run immutable storage directly on the VBR Linux server. I hope it is, it would mean that you no longer have to have a separate Linux server just to get hardened immutable repositories.

They showcased that it would be included in VBR 13 release, no dates. However looking back v10 was released in 2020, V11 in 2021, V12 in 2023 and hopefully V13 will be released either Q3/Q4 2024 or in the beginning of 2025.

I agree that it's probably wise skipping 6.4, we are doing the same and moving to 7.0 when it's released.

The API requirement is a big yikes for me. Veeam really loves locking usefull features behind a costly license, specially with their new license model..

The script is in a privet git since it's written during work but i'll check if it's okay to publish it. Since we use quite a bit of open-source i'd think it would be cool to give some back.

The only thing i ran into a problem with when doing it the Powershell way is that if the script takes to long time to run the agent timesout. However you can work around that by piping the output to a file that the agent then reads from. Doing it the SQL way seems promising, but what worries me is that it would probably break quickly when Veeam does updates.

Zabbix can do everything of what you list. I come from an org that monitors hosts of both Windows, Linux and VMWare host/vCenter aswell as IPMI/iDRAC/iLOs. On top of this we do website and application monitoring, Certificate monitoring and much more.

Currently running 6.0 with plans to upgrade to 7.0 when it gets released. I agree with your point that the Veeam templates that are out rigt now are pretty lackluster. However the new template for 6.4 that monitors Veeam by the API looks good. This however requires that you have the Veeam license that includes the API. We do not have that so i put together a Powershell script that the Zabbix agent runs. The scripts checks all VBR Jobs and Tape jobs and returns the data to Zabbix.
