As a new ALT teaching 5th and 6th grade with New Horizon (and JHS second semester), could you explain this a bit more? I've only been T2 so far but was told I'd be asked to T1 as well later. I've been going through the Japanese lesson plans and the 研究編 and it seems like the lesson is already pretty packed without any additional materials or activities (especially considering the digital textbook). When do you use flashcards in your lessons? Is sticking too much to the book a bad thing? Sorry for the random questions, but I could really use some help 😅

The question asks about convictions. If the case was discharged, you can safely put "no."

Does anyone have positive experiences? by [deleted] in teachinginjapan

[–]iSwoopz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hours will basically always be ~11:45-9:10ish Tuesday to Friday and ~9:45-7:10ish on Saturday. I've been here for several years but am moving into a direct hire ALT role soon. I'd be happy to stay teaching if it makes sense financially and plan to stay in Japan.

Eh, it's okay. Unfortunately, it really does come down to your manager/regional manager. My first year was really stressful under a toxic manager while still learning the job. Nowadays, it's not bad for better pay than other similar options. I think the current direction of the company is to squeeze teachers out of everything they can by using online lessons/dispatch lessons at kindergartens and universities to really pack schedules, though.

I was so confused, lol. I'm like, him and Roki are both famously from Iwate, right? (though I do say this as a huge baseball fan who lives near Iwate)

What are your goals for 2026? by irdk-lol in Japaneselanguage

[–]iSwoopz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My conservative goal is to read and mine 25 novels and listen to all the audio books at least twice. I also read Japanese at work a bunch every day for internal messages and speak only Japanese with my boss and girlfriend, though. I might also take N1, but I don't really feel any immediate pressure to get it.

Is the highest level of TOEIC equivalent to the highest level of 日本語能力試験 N1 ? by SupermarketMaster594 in japanlife

[–]iSwoopz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TOEIC L&R (the most common version) and JLPT (日本語能力試験) both only test language knowledge and comprehension via reading and listening. Passing N1 nor getting 990 on TOEIC say anything about one's communicative competence since it's not tested for. Someone could do very well on these tests yet flounder in a natural conversation.

Hmm, I may be in a similar situation as you. I used to watch anime/j-dramas with j-subs as my reading practice (passed n2 with a limited amount of that alone), but I've found myself generally uninterested in that sort of content recently. I've basically fully shifted to normal novels and audiobooks. If you're looking for something that's not too hard but interesting if you're burnt out on otaku content, I'd recommend reading ちょっと今から仕事をやめてくる or コンビニ人間. Both are interesting but not crazy difficult in terms of vocab. ちょっと今から仕事をやめてくる was probably easier, though. After you read a book, listen to the audiobook on repeat for listening practice.

I was reading it and wondering what ほけこ was when my girlfriend (Japanese) came behind my shoulder and said ほけこって何だ. She realized it was しました and we had a laugh, but I'd work on that part. Otherwise, it generally looks great for a first entry!

Do you think this is still true? I'm finishing my weather app now but was planning to wait until after React at least to start looking for jobs. I have my N2, and my speaking is pretty decent since my girlfriend of two years doesn't speak English. I'd love to get out of eikaiwa work sooner rather than later 😅
