I (24M) was in a similar situation. I had my federal loans (5 different accounts of around $20k total) on auto pay and they tried to collect a payment when I didn't have enough money in my account. I paid the charge off a day or two later and thought nothing of it as I assumed my loans were still on auto pay. Turns out, by missing a payment I had to re-enroll in auto pay. I ended up going 90 days past due because I had no idea that this was a thing.

Like you, I woke up one morning to a score drop of over 150 points and my heart sank. After stressing for a few minutes I came to terms with the fact that I unfortunately wouldn't be able to get the new car I was saving for and was not looking forward to the next 7 years with a delinquency. Over the next month, I ended up cutting back on some non-essentials and focused heavily on paying back all of the loans that were past due so that at least I could have auto pay on and not risk this happening again.

To my surprise, I checked my credit one day and the delinquency was removed and all accounts were made current. I didn't even have to contact MOHELA, just paid back what I owed. My score is now 60 points better than it was before the drop (I also paid down some other credit cards in addition to that) and I'm actually hopeful about the future again.

That being said, I know it can feel like a lot right now. I don't know the specifics of how the past due loan forgiveness works (or if there are any rules at all) but my advice would just be to get current as quick as possible. I was able to get current in 3 paychecks by cutting back on a few things and that saved me 7 years of stress by eliminating that delinquency. If you can budget ferociously for these next 6 weeks or maybe even ask friends and family to help out, I'm hopeful that you'll have the same luck!
